I appreciate your struggle with the abundance of art supplies and choosing what to review. I deal with depression and anxiety, and I know that I buy more when I’m struggling. But it’s just an illusion that I’ll feel better when I have more cool art supplies. So if anyone finds themselves buying for that reason, please focus on doing something good for yourself… create some art or talk to someone. Because always buying the next new thing in a review will do nothing for your mental health.

I just bought sewing shears at JoAnne Fabrics for 50% off. So bought tailors 10 inch ones too! Im oretty happy for a couple days over this.

Another thing that can help is to fill up an on line cart to your heart's content and then leave the cart alone; don't check out. Simply planning and imagining what you'd do with these supplies often gives the same boost that owning them would. Edit: also if you can hold off for a few days or more, then you're less likely to get things purely on impulse whether you're struggling or not. I do agree about talking to someone and/or creating something as well of course; those things can make a big difference.

I don’t think it’s so much the buying that helps artists in these times, but more so the thinking new art supplies will help make art to get us out of that funk that will. But it took me a very long time to realize that I did buy more stuff when I was down like that. And while it did help in the short term, not so much in the long term because I had the harder time actually using what I bought and sticking to it.

I feel your pain, I do exactly the same, I think I also use it as a reason to procrastinate on actually finishing the art.

Hot tip, watch reviews on art supplies you have that you haven't touched in a while to re-spark the reason you bought them in the first place because new videos have been created since you bought them. You can then save money and spark creativity and play with what you have

Okay, I bought these for $40.00 on a flash sale on Amazon last June I think. I was struggling like crazy with the high end gouache and mixing colors only to have everything dry so fast while I was trying to paint. I found these to be simple and fun and - Voila! No problems. The only down side was the darned cups were so stuck it was brutal trying open all of them. Thank you for sharing your talent, Lindsay.❤

In regards to swatching videos - I do love them, and they are nice to have playing while I'm at work. But it's a particular type. Seeing people experience new products or new colors for the first time and hearing their reactions, or people who simply love color expressing their feelings for each swatch and how it inspires them. Or just seeing how pigment (particularly watercolor) moves on the surface. I'm one of those that loves to "watch paint dry," and enjoy it with others. So, product reviews aside, helpful for many as they are, seeing the paint "in action" and how it acts when applied is just as useful as it is interesting and fun to watch! So, thank you for including them. 😊

I bought the 52 HIMI cup set second hand for 10€ to see if I liked it. It was brand new! As you say, there are different uses for different media. I play around with them, use them to warm up, play without worrying about mixing. I ouck up my Holbein or W&N when I want to do something more involved. I ❤ your stream of consciousness chat while you swatch. Thanks for this honest review. I would be interested to hear more about your new persoective on M.Graham gouache. Thanks again Lindsay.

Hullo Lindsay, I do appreciate your reviews and I hope you continue to receive products to review. I just don’t see how anyone is going to be able to buy ALL of the new products introduced just in one month! I look on these Jelly gouache paints as more of a quick cash grab. If they were a “quality paint” every major brand would have a line of jelly gouache! 30+ years ago when I was working with gouache it was considered a temporary medium! NOT a fine art medium! I am not a snob, but I believe that if I am creating art for the “ages” I am going to use the best quality I can get. 100% cotton paper and very good archival quality paints! I have purchased several “fun” supplies like Nicker poster colors for painting Ghibli Film screen grabs! These are the same Japanese brand that is used for creating the artwork for their films! Did I have to get this paint? Nope, it sure feels like FUN! Thank you for sharing your thoughts and opinions about this product, I might not rush out to buy but I bet someone out there sees it as the must have paint for their next project! Please take care, be safe and keep those videos coming!

Having that many colors can be overwhelming, but! Having that many colors is *so* much fun. The best of all worlds is to have these choices, then cherry-pick the ones you want to use in a more limited palette. Heck, you can set up several limited palettes for different needs: brights, dirty colors, rainbow, warms/cools, faces, landscapes, etc. etc.

I totally appreciate your honest opinion on those gigantic sets of lower grade paints. I would never buy those for my grandkids (my barometer of all things in life...lol). Not because they are lower grade but it would be so overwhelming for them. Plus, they would never learn anything about color theory. As you pointed out, a small mixing set is so much more economical - I believe it is Holbein that is often on Amazon for $20 - $25 for 3 primaries and a black and white. Right now WN 6 color set is for less than $30. Can't beat that!

Sometimes I don't have the money for the more expensive art supplies and I appreciate being able to buy something fun like a jelly gouache set to paint in my mixed media sketchbooks. So while I totally understand you not loving them, they help me decide whether I spend my money on something like this, or a smaller set, or maybe something similarly priced that's higher quality, etc.!

I'm a massive fan of gouache with my illustration work--my bread & butter, & love love love that you swatched out the tray I have sitting on the floor of my art closet as I write this. These are GORGEOUS colors, but in Denver's arid climate, they'd be dried up within a month. I've tried SO many things to extend their life to no avail. My pricey choices are Shin Han gouache, but I can only afford a few tubes. What a dilemma, eh? Many thanks for the swatching video. Even if the want monster is always lurking nearby (he's such an opportunist! 🤣), that's never on you! Your reviews are so valuable!! Sometimes, I learn about products and new media that I might otherwise have never known about and try. Other times, I'll wait to get your take on a new product. And then, there are those times where I'll get a case of "shiny new object" syndrome, buy the thing first, then wait and see what you thought 😅. The smell can be around from 1 to about 4 days. We use Decon so they can die wherever. They are only in the basement or upstairs. My cat is only on the main floor. If I get a headache or the smell is here we go look and usually find the dead mouse. I hope you get relief soon. Take care.

I love your swatching videos… I love your random chitchat and listening to the voice in your head… instead of mine … I also like to listen and watch other people do arty stuff…..while I just crochet or knit. And don’t worry, like you said, we’re all different…. I’m sure there is a lot of people like me who do like buying stuff JUST BECAUSE it’s pretty… I’m totally into spending on art supplies, have full set syndrome, want it to look pretty on display in my craftroom… and don’t have artistic talent so I don’t really care if I use it… (shock/horror - that would make my pretty supplies look uneven and messy anyways!) 😂 I mean, I like my more expensive pens and paints, etc… but I also ADORE my huge and cheap Crayola pencils and SuperTips collections… cos they look so darn cute in my displays on my *cough pretty much just for show* art desk 😂😂😂 you’re not selling out, we don’t think you’re selling out, some of us are into honest views on how good the supply is, some of us like aesthetics or having the latest hottest thing and come first to see if you know about it… you have to keep up with the latest trends for that reason too…’cos if you didn’t know, how can you compare and still say what you like IS the best? My plan is to use them for the first layer on mixed media pages in my sketchbook. So it's helpful to have a large amount of a premixed color. The most earth-shattering bit of information in this video is the fact that not all jelly gouache is the same. I know that should be obvious, since there is variation among traditional gouache brands, and different brands of acrylic gouache. But, for some reason I strongly suspected that all these brands of jelly gouache were the same product, just rebranded. I bought the Creative Inspirations set of 24 from Jerry’s last Christmas, and although it does have a more slippery texture than other gouache, I haven’t experienced many of the negatives I have seen people describe experiencing with HIMI. I did try to keep it moist for awhile, spritzing it with water every now and then, but ultimately it thickened up. Currently, about 7 months after opening it, the gouache is not dry, but sort of like a thick paste. I am trying to maintain this texture as I actually think it behaves a lot more like traditional gouache now. The last thing I need is any more water-soluble media, and frankly I would never use that set of 112 colors (and I don’t want to open all those foil tops!) But, it’s hard to resist the novelty factor.

In all fairness to you, anything that could be made by a white label company is probably the same thing, especially if it's being sold on line by one you've never heard of before and it can be harder to tell them apart when something becomes trendy. That's why reviews like this are helpful. I'm glad the palette that you got is working out and that their shift was in a direction you prefer. :)

I've got plenty of jelli gouache, so this is no temptation for me. But in the recent past, (few months) I've bought that nice set of Ohuhu acrylic markers you showed(I really do like them and will use them, a 12 color set of water-based dot markers, so I love making circles and dots so maybe it's an ASMR thing? A Qor basic color intro set, (you reviewed) to add to my Qor stash. Gansai Tambi Art Nouveau set, (just because...& you reviewed,) & Glitter gel pens (for kicks....but they're definitely a better quality than just regular metallic gel pens and they have a much finer point...they work great to add on top of watercolor.) So we all just need to think before we buy and take a look at what we already have & make an effort to use whatever supply it is. But we don't have to kick ourselves when we do buy some stuff that we bought just for fun and maybe we'll use it for a while or even pass it on if we know we're not gonna use it. I've have had improved success in stopping myself from buying things when I absolutely have no need..and then I feel better about my self-discipline. 👍😀and that's a great feeling too! p.s...if you are buying excessive amounts of STUFF all the time that you can't afford and it's just stacking up...no judgment (I've had periods of dealing with the buy-buy monster myself...to make me feel better...retail therapy really doesn't work for long ) but that often indicates a problem and I hope you can talk to a friend or therapist to help you gain some control. This stuff is sent to me from brands to review. I don't like shopping actually so I don't have an issue with retail therapy. I worry about what the reviews tempt others to buy and I get overwhelmed keeping up with all the new products and requests for reviews from viewers.

Sorry to be throwing in so many comments, it's one of those sleepless nights, so I run your videos instead of sitting alone in the dark! Quick question. Can I mix inexpensive opaque watercolor tube paints with Jelly Gouache to get richer or better colorways? Just a thought of how to use up all the stranger colors that are in these giant boxes? I have some tube paint that was an impulse buy at a local store's clearance bins. They say they're single pigment colors but they seem really chalky, so I don't know what to do with them. As you say, some of these colors make no sense. As I'm re-watching this, I'm trying to see how the colors relate to each other. I can't imagine using all of these colors. I bought the other "favorite" set you sent the link too, and I've wondered about some of those colors too. I'm curious & wondered, what is the binder in these and will it mix with other water based pigments. PS. I was really tempted by this set, just because the number of colors would be great to add to my coloring book paints, but seeing these swatches has cured me. So many of these shades are just not that pleasant. Maybe they are more for portraits or some kind of kids toy paintings.
@thefrugalcrafter
@thefrugalcrafter 2 месяца назад
They should mix fine. The binder is likely gum arabic.

Thank you Lindsay - question - have you ever tried or reviewed any art whale gouache. There is a big box like this one - it is like himi I think. It’s on Amazon but the art whale one has a lid for each individual color, under the big lid, which I like. ??? I would like a big set just for sketchbook work. Thank you for all you do!

One possible reason that some colors were so streaky might be because you were going pretty fast and had a little too much water on your brush! Although I know they can technically be used as opaque watercolors too haha

I had to have the brush damp or the paint dragged badly

My question is not quite about this product, but it is about gouache lol. I remember you had a video in which you said a gouache you had reviewed dried up and rewet very well. I think it was either Da vinci gouache or Daniel Smith gouache. Which gouache was it? I am trying to set up a travel palette and I heard that Winsor and Newton gouache cracks and does not rewet well. I think it was the video in which you showed a painting you did of a tool shed using dried gouache in that travel palette you made from a plastic box you found on the side of the road. You would think with that much specific info I could find the video lol but I could not.
@thefrugalcrafter

That was DaVinci, it rewets well, so does Daniel smith.

If you head toward doing more high-end reviews, I would love to see one on the Schmincke gouache. Their watercolors seem to have a bad rep, but I keep hearing good things about their gouache. Holbein gouache as well. Heck, while you're at it, do the Shinhan and Winsor Newton goaches as well (lol). AND! I want to know why you'd buy an acrylic gouache? Why that, why not just use acrylic paints? :)

I’d be more interested in the himi tube gouache than any of their jelly gouache, I made the anti bacterial spray that you said. And clean water each time, my 52 set of himi gouache became totally overrun with mold in 6months time it was like 40 dollars I’d have rather spent my money on professional tubes. I believe gouache is like any other art supply in fact any manufactured goods, you spend a little more and you’re getting a much better value for money. I honestly felt misled by influencers when it came to Himi Gouache. And again because it doesn’t mix, dries fast, binder separates, becomes a moldy playground even when sprayed with alcohol, super heavy packaging. Idk the only thing that I liked was the fact they had metallics and neons, and that was before they molded on me. Before I could even use 1/4 of the colors.

I live in IN near the great lakes, so maybe it’s because of humidity but it was so much work to try and them it was ridiculous so I tried to let them dry, but when I did that the mold kept growing into cracks all the way through the bottom of the cup so I am now at a point where I don’t want to throw it away because it was 40 to 45 dollars, but there is now no easy way to get rid of the mold.
@thefrugalcrafter

I'm surprised that I haven't had the mold problem with well water and storing in basement. The only time I ever had a mold issue was with Yarka watercolors, and only in the earth tones but I'm pretty sure I got some pond or river water in there. I did see the gimi spray on amazon today. Maybe they use something stronger than alcohol? I'm sorry your palette molded, that stinks!

There was one jelly gouache that was somewhat interesting and it was the artwhale and it was because each cup was plastic with its own lid and another lid for the case, at least you may not have to worry about each color drying out, and if one gets contaminated with mold the others would be fine because they have there own lid.

@@thefrugalcrafteryes it did stink but it wasn’t your fault, it was like I just ended up working on cleaning it out then I would be so upset I didn’t even want to paint with it, my lid may have not been very good it was very hard to close.

asking here in hopes someone in Lindsay's lovely community might have the answer: Does anyone know if I can buy just the pocket brushes W&N includes in their watercolor sets? I do not need a new set because I already have the colors they always include but I would love a couple more of the pocket brushes, both the metal ones that you can take apart and the blue cotman ones that come in the field sets. or if anyone has any they don't use and might want to part with them??

The biggest inconvenience of this 112-color set is that, you cannot change arrangement as you like it..... each time you change, you have to change 2 colors at the same time. And some of the pairing is just crazy.....(like dark-blue and purple pairing...... why not pair it with another purple???)

I need an hour of you talking me out of buying supplies EVERY DAY lol. It's astonishing how poor the color selection is, and the layout of the palette. I see on the Himi there are repeat colors even in the smaller set. It's like they had AI pick their colors and layout.

If you thank it's the same but not sure you can always make a dupe playlist. That way people can decide for themselves. If that makes you feel akward you can always request more eco friendly products to review and add some conveniance basics. My two cents; product is already made. While that sounds rather lame I cant afford to be picky like some can. If I have to fly it in it might as well be something I Like lol. To each their own right? We cant look in another's wallet or expertise; we can only be honest in why and what we use.

Yup, it's such a race to the bottom on price and quality these days. People can't use up what they have before more product gets pushed to them so to keep them buying anyway brands come out with bigger kits and gimmicky products (and apparently I'm a suckered for a gimmick 😆) it's been like this in the Crafting industry for a long time and I think the art industry is catching on.

@thefrugalcrafter I purchased Arteza's Jelli Gouache 24 set a few weeks ago and have been looking for reviews. You compared the Arteza Gouache tubes and liked them but I am afraid Arteza's Jelli cups are going to present the same problems as HIMI. I even went to Harbor Freight and purchased the box you recommended. But now it's $28 for the set, $7 for the box. Have you tried, do you own Arteza Jelli set? If so, are the more like the mediocre HIMI or Arteza's tube Gouache?
