I personnally use Cloud / Resnick / Jeume and get near 100% success rate against that team and all variations with Gilgamesh. Jeume, with her sword and Ultros, takes absolutely no damage from Shrek and thanks to Resnick, can stay safe from a curse. As for Cloud, he's a beast, but you have to have a fast Resnick, in order to keep him alive from Sephiroth. You need a top notch starting buffs rotation, but once it's set, you need 3 reflex from Sephiroth in order to lose. Don't forget that Silver Memories (24 AoE res) has +8% AGI on sub, so, you can run it as a primary VC on Resnick, in order to make that team work!
great idea JB!! I think the game's at its most fun when the meta can be overcome with players getting inventive and creatitve so I loved seeing this, especially in the case of next gen units when the best units feel unstoppable. my favorite team was mono-light if only to see Lilyth being effective and Cloud showing he can remain in the conversation past the greatsword meta.
I think an important takeaway too is that a win is a win, and i did try to showcase some battles where the margins were slim, or where I received bad RNG but still was able to overcome, even if it was by a hair.

The Battle music Medley is from the Distant Worlds live orchestral recordings, there are quite a number of them now, but this one is from 'The Journey of 100' edition, highly recommend checking them out.
Thanks for the effort to make this guide! I didn't expect there's so much details and fine tuning to beat the meta teams out there. Although I skipped 1-2 units in the listed teams, I'm still quite impressed with the showcase of the fights. They were quite inspiring to me.👍🏻👍🏻
Great video idea, and I think this would be a great series going forward. I personally run Ramada Alaya Lucielle and tend to beat these teams more often than not. Cant wait for Exia to come in and replace Alaya, it may become a real meta team then.
oh! this is a fantastic format. This is the information we actually need, that encourages us to fight the uphill battles where we must or where we choose to, instead of just defaulting to "you need this or don't bother". and it tells it to us in some level of detail. Further discussion on alternative/supplementary picks to these mainstream units might be another option to go with? for example, I'm not sure what good backup light greatsword user can sub in for cloud if you've missed the AC colab like me, but up until Lilyth came out I was using Elsirelle in her place, because Light+Slash Damage has enough support. She's not a great substitute for cloud's damage, tankiness and defense pen but I was brute forcing her in out of fanboy love and getting up to my target arena ranks(which are modest tbh).
Digging back into units prior to the 4th anniversary is very difficult to do at the moment; so I did focus on more recent units for the most part since they will be the most competitive. Hopefully for 5th anniversary the Dev's do something to make the older units a bit more viable.
@@JB79 that definitely makes sense. honestly, as much as I like a lot of the colorful cast of characters we have in this game, it's mostly about working with what you have til something else pulls. And that's fine. I am 100% looking forward to potential upgrades or retrains and I hope the devs give a lot of our original characters a new lease on life! Just saw Adelnard's new drip in part of the story and i'm hoping this means he gets a UR upgrade like Ramada did. Nitor Lad has earned it.
I hope you get many views for these unveiling of meta counter teams. As a lot of the other players would keep these a secret from the average player. I might have to try a few teams out that I have units for too! Thanks!
This is really helpful especially for player that doesnt have the meta. I have been using jeume, seifer and sresnick to beat the meta. It's working very well so far. With sresnick, it's definitely about who hit first to break barrier and seal barrier break.
Absolutely, Summer Resnick is a game changing unit right now, I tried to show that there are at least other options that can be competitive though which was the ultimate goal.
I always played the game casually for fun. Never had a problem with any team until now. Fire Sephy is a HARD counter versus my ice team which I’ve built since the beginning when Lasswell and Auron were meta units. Glad for this video
@@JB79 Ice has always been the most balanced element in my opinion. I’ve had some meta dark teams as well but always preferred the versatility I got with ice. Just need a great sword vision card with curse resist and an esper and I’ll be solid
Noted! As i watched it back I think I couldve done a better job explaining why i made the build choices I did in terms of VCs and equipment - it goes back to what is talked about in the initial slides, but there is a little bit of a disconnect there. Will work on that for the next one!

Jeume 122 agi OG elsirelle 118 agi new cloud 122 agi with keen blade. Mightve been the gvg map spreading enemies out but i can take on this meta by jeume using def stones and elsi charging forward to take the initial shrekka dmg.
Nice! Maybe You could work Veritas of the Water in there over OG Elsi since Veritas works on several of the Great Sword VCs also, might be a more valuable overall team contributor, even if the cards don't perfectly align for her specifically.
Bowtie is used for two different reasons - 1) to restrict movement - lowering the movement of the unit can sometimes allow you to get off an additional buff, or to stay out of range of the enemy in the early turns OR 2) to create hate on a unit - hate can be used to alter your own buffing sequence and change the directions the unit go to buff as they will always go to the target with hate if available, hate will also effect how the enemy will path across the map which can be very important
Sometimes that's what you have to do depending on the competition, or if you have folks not tending to their team, hopefully this video gives people more ideas that they don't have to just throw their hands up at a difficult meta.
Such an L for me for failing to pity resnick at 1920 medals lol. I fell asleep on last day due to tiredness from work. She came back but out from frustration, I exchanged all medals tto shards and did not know they will bring her back coz of some bug. Good thing I got shrek in like a thousand vis or I already have quitted. I stick w ith seph greg and shrek but are they very inferior compared to this meta? Sresnick support skills and survivability is so strong. Love the vid. It is so real that new dario is so strong against shrek and gilgamesh. I used him before I got shrek. The issue is again... the curse, and he also lacks damage, I also cant separate him enough with the other 2 that they will only target dario
I have someone in a similar position to you in regards to resnick, they were on vacation and were unable to complete building her. Times are tough right now if you don't have her, but that's why I challenged myself in this video to not use her as much as I could, and you can see I was able to still have some successful bouts; so it is still possible.
I made a new account while s resnick and shrek was up and got all the vc like summer and orochi and not sure but it seems to be performing better lol coz I got gilg from newbie selector and his shards from previous 26mil events. Im not sure which one should I keep 😆
It's been nice to see Greatsword have a bit of a resurgence after falling out of favor, try working in Lightning Astrius TMR for the Immob/Berserk resist if you have it.
im suprised this is more meta than gilga/shrec/resnick team since shrec/seph paired together has major weakness. both can't remove shell or protect and shrec barrier break is only magic based so if you're up against a healer sustain/curse dispeller+ prot/shell, this team won't do much unlike gilga who covers shrec's major weakness
It's because Summer Resnick is what the meta revolves around, she is actually the best unit on the field right now in my opinion - the triple DPS can win, but the problem is Resnick takes away their follow up damage and their curse, the team becomes less of an issue. If you don't have Resnick, then I can see the triple dps team being much more of a problem, but still winnable.
You'll notice that the majority of the teams I take are physical in nature, so that Resnick can't snowball the fight against me with her constant magic barriers
Actually evasion still works vs this team, since it built mostly for a bulk, and hope, that high accuracy and sure hits will be enough. Used Mont+Earth Lucio+Seifer and it has 100% winrate if other side doesn't have Alex rings equipped.
Evasion is not viable vs the builds I'm showcasing in the video; especially Mont and Seifer who cannot build the same level of Evasion as a pure evasion unit. Picking on teams in arena where you can see there build is a different story.
@@JB79 Then again, without alex rings on enemy side, it doesn't matter, Seifer got enough evasion to dodge barrier break LB of Shrek, Lucio she can't hit even with her high accuracy attack, Mont is bulky enough to take some hits here and there. And nowdays almost nobody using alex rings on def, cause most ppl attack with recent op heroes and you need to worry to counter them, not some evasion.
All the units seen in the video are at a high reincarnation level 70+, including Sephiroth and Shrek who are maxxed. The exceptions are the support units who are between 0-15, and Lilyth who I have at 25.
If grabbing Jeume cleared you out, you would've had several months now to grab another coupls of units? She came out beginning of April, we average ~20-25k free vis a month, and potentially more depending on Arena and Event placements. For comparison, my F2P account got Jeume (pity), then Gilgamesh (25k), then Resnick (12k), then Shrek (free tickets) and is back up to nearly 30k. Cards Pulled were both FF7 Cloud VCs, Orochi, and Chariot. I had a bit of luck on a couple banners, but it doesn't really make sense to have nothing but Jeume unless you're just not actively playing the game.
@@JB79 Yeah the comeback banners I received were Jeume and Dark Siren as latest permanent pool. I'm trying to play again to experience 5v5 pvp since I wanted it for so long.
This game will never reach its full potential. This isn't meta, these are players with extremely deep pockets. There's no way F2P will compete with that unless they're extremely lucky with their pulls.
I use a wide variety of units here, I think at least 1-2 of the teams I showcase should be accessible to just about anyone in the player base who actively plays whether they spend or not. Your overall point though is well taken and I agree with you, the game is too expensive right now for the rapid release schedule they're implementing.
