Sorry but I have to say this: you know you're listening to a New Zealander when check-in comes out as chicken and you wonder for a second what the heck are chickens doing at the airport. 😆

Germans are not better nor worse than others. Always believe in the kindness of others. You will find both types of people in every country.

I think germans are just more reserved than other cultures, but that doesnt mean we are cold. If a german calls you a acquaintance we know you if you are a friend ususally that means we will actually do almost everything for you and it is never just a saying... And with people we dont know we are usually happy to help but we just always will expect you to follow the rules and it is so important that you consider following them since most german will and it is just how our world works.

The story is a shame for the Frankfurt airport. Glad you made it.

That is a very moving story. Compliments to your husband for speaking up in front of a large crew. Apart from that I don‘t think it is a question of nationality but a question of character. All sterotypes are fundamentally faulty.

Very moving story - I can feel your despair! My husband experienced similar when he went on a trip with his friends this summer. He is an absolutely positive person but as he saw the crowds at the airport, he was sure they are not gonna make it in time. But one of his friends spoke up to all the people just like your husband did and they also made it just in time - they were the last to enter the plane. I think most of the people can feel the despair if someone really is in trouble and don't think of just cheating.

The whole story convinced me once again to never set foot on a plane unless I absolutely need to cross an ocean.

I once was late to a flight from Berlin to Madrid and realized that if I stayed in the queue, I would miss my flight. So I spoke to some airport personel who just passed by and told him that. He just said: "Please come with me." And he led me directly to front of the queue. Nobody said anything because he had so much authority.

Germans are often shy and tongue tied, that looks cold and rude to foreigners. But ask for help and they come through.

Ok, now I am ugly crying. What a touching story. But it definitely triggered me. I had a very similar experience almost missing a flight to the US. I’m beyond grateful to all the God’s, fate and everyone else allowing us to make that flight. It was the last time I saw my mother before she passed. I boarded that plane drenched in enough sweat to ring out my hair, sobbing and I’m pretty sure I traumatized my then 5 and 7 year olds. We had planned everything to arrive in Frankfurt 5 hours before departure.

Thank God you've made it! Your husband is German and you are an English native speaker. I imagine myself, brazilian, in such a situation... I can't imagine how would I deal with it not being able to speak so fluently . I am happy for.you and for your Kids that all went well.

People are people. There are assholes in every country. I just did a flight to Düsseldorf from Miami. We had a German husband and wife sitting in front of my husband, my 4 year old, and I. My daughter was quietly asking my husband in German what was happening when we were queuing up and then taking off. The German man said in English she needs a slap up beside the head to shut up. My husband came back with Wer, wie, was, wieso, weshalb, warum? Wer nicht fragt bleibt dumm. The guy and my husband got into a shouting match in German and then things calmed down for whatever reason. Everytime my daughter coughed he or his wife would let out a loud sigh. There were kids across the aisle from us and whenever they made a noise the wife would turn around and look at my daughter and shoot daggers at her with her look. This went in for the 8 hour flight. If I was into stereotypes I would think Germans were like these people, but I know they aren't. When I was 8 months pregnant my husband parked to close to the curb and we had a low BMW. I couldn't get out of the seat with my feet on the sidewalk. I went to rollover (I was thinking I could get out on my hands and knees) when a little old German man and wife came running over to help me. I was sitting there thinking you people can't do anything. You'll need a forklift to get me out. My husband realized what was going on and helped me. The German woman hugged me and the man rubbed my back when I started crying. I felt like Shamu the killer whale from Sea World.

Oh, the Frankfurt airport is always so stressful at any time but your situation was so much worse than usual. I am almost sick just thinking of what you went through. We just flew from Frankfurt to the U.S. a few days ago and the ultra tight security and repeated passport checks are annoying. Last time I got pulled out of the boarding line for another additional random check, so frustrating.

We ARE rude ... compared to Canadians. We are very direct and often lack a filter. That makes us rude in some persons opinions.

Well yeah someone was looking after you. It was all the kind people that let you go in front of them. I don't think people realize or do it on purpose but by ascribing these situations with an unlikely outcome to some sort of higher power, they take away the decision and kindness from those people who helped and imply that some intervention was necessary to move them to do that in the first place. If they made their own decision to help than there was no intervention necessary and no higher power to credit. Most often it is just a harmless turn of phrase, but the inherent implication is really quite sad and diminishes what we as humans can do for each other. Despite that is was nice that you thanked the people again at the end of the video.

Fun fact: the plane wont take off if your luggage is onboard but not you. Either you show up or your luggage has to be removed before take-off. At least in theory

I am torn on the story...on the one hand, I am so happy for you that you made it...but I am also wondering about all the other people who were in the same situation as you who were also waiting in line. I mean, someone else might not have made it in time because other people were cutting the line, even though they were there early enough, but didn't feel comfortable to skip the line like others did.

I can only agree to all the good comments and your story. But what I want to mention as well, as long you have registered your parcels and they have loaded it on the plane, they know that you are announced to fly and you can be sure that they are waiting for you and will not take off without you, especiallly when they are well aware of the actual crowded situation on the airport. They will have several announcement to search for you first before they need to make the decision to crawl into the package cabinet of the plane and remove your packaging from the plane again. So next time, don't panic that much in this case.

A nice story for christmas. We've been to a metal concert, 2 days ago. Night wish. Best concert of the year. In performance. But that is only one part of the story: the other part is, how the audience behaved towards each other. If you ever wanna wanna be midst a friendly and peaful audience at a concert: try some Nightwish. (Or Pothead, from Berlin.) A christmas story for you: pls try and look for the history of the W:O:A, the "Wacken open air" festival. It's a pretty amazing story.

We all learn lessons. Obviously in Europe you need to take extra time to get through security and immigration and hopefully airlines will start check in gate start operating earlier do you have enough time to get to your boarding gate. In London I always got to Heathrow 6 hours earlier as you could have alsorts of possible obstacles.

It happened to us in Heathrow that after waiting for 4hrs in a queue of hundreds of passengers as one check-in counter was open for several airlines, we had no chance to get ahead of anyone else in the queues.After security check and immigration we raced like crazy to the gate, reached just as the door of the plane was going to be closed and the crew refused to let us in , we missed our BA flight..

Gosh that sounds awful. I've traveled through and from FRA 4 times during the summers of 2021 and 2022 and I didn't think it was that crowded. I get some special treatment though because I am visually impaired so I get to cut lines lol. I was worried I'd end up missing my flight the last time though because I checked in late and had to wait a while for my escort, but it turned out a lot of people were late so the flight got a little delayed anyway. I can't imagine doing that with three crying kids and a crying husband! lol

can anybody tell me, why in modern times elderly and families with young kids don't count anymore? Why, why, why, why are there not at all airports, always, not just at crisis times, extra lanes, for free, for elderlies and families??? Shouldn't this be an honour for any official institution like airports? I ask this myself every time I see families with babies truggle in lanes. How stupid is society?

I don't think it's a stereotype, but has to do with the strong social system they have to rely on that they don't feel they need to go out of their way to help someone in need. Whereas countries who don't have that count on each other in moments of crisis..

Those people who helped you jumped the line are the most beautiful people in the world. Especially thanks to the elderly couple, she was probably a loving grandma.

My husband’s step father is German so we have a lot of experience with German people. Almost without exception they have always been the nicest people. Always welcoming and generous.

This elderly couple were angels. Angels can also be people for whom God puts a good mission in their hearts. 🙂

Like Stevie Wonder once said: "There is good and bad in everyone!" 😅 But your story reminds me of my way back home to Germany from USA last year. From Denver to Dallas. From Dallas to London (The Queen had passed two days before. Can you imaging the crowd at Heathrow?). From London to Hanover. Our very careful son picked us up there and took us home. Erm... and maybe I should mention that I started this journey with Corona flu. I didn't know it that time, I just felt like going to die. After all it's just such a GOOD feeling to come home! 😊

Just a random "technical" question (it's been many years since I travelled by plane). Do you now need to go through customs when you depart? In my memory it only happens after arrival at the destination you have to do that. Or did that change since 1997 (last time I flew) or maybe 9/11?

i remember almost missing a flight in Spain and there was a long queue of people waiting to get through security for their flight to Manchester.. i suddenly realized my flight was earlier than theirs and i had like 10 minutes left. This group came out of nowhere. I just sprinted to the front, squeezed through, did not even look at them cause i thought for an english person this must be super rude.. i just did it, and think they were so stunned that they could not even complain.
