This conversation took place in 2008. From 08 through today Berkshire returned about 10.5% per annum. Pretty good if you ask me.

I love his philosophy and agree with everything in the Intelligent Investor...but he has a huge advantage with his returns since the 80s because so many people mimic what he buys.

There's a difference between Berkshire stock doing well and Warren's stock picks returning 7-10%. His portfolio has been underperforming the market for the last 20 years
@tg14764
@tg14764 Год назад
@@scarfacecapital. yeah but that's not a comparison you can make because a lot of his stocks are locked in due to a low cost basis and the tax bill berkshire would have to pay when selling. coca cola, american express etc... Berkshire's portfolio is always imperfect because of this reason,so you shouldnt compare it to raw market performance when some portion of it is locked in due to outside factors

You just have to appreciate the candor and directness of a Warren Buffet. People like he and Jack Bogle was the same way they share knowledge that is very valuable undressed and unvarnished. Because it's not all about looking good or making the most money always. It's about just being a decent honest human being. Kudos to them both.

I would take 10% a year lol. That’s a great return

Total market index fund DCA'd weekly has returned 12% the last decade. Simple.
@barryallen6927
@barryallen6927 2 месяца назад
@@knpstrr how many years of that "last decade" have we had zero interest rate? Further, the long term return (over 100 years) of S&P500 is around 10%, so don't be cocky and watch how the next 10 years return pan out, as interest rate remains relatively higher than it has in the last decade. Shiller PE is 3rd highest right now as it has ever been in history. The more you pay, the lesser your long term return is. I am happy to hold Berkshire stocks when the rest of the market (especially AI) is in euphoria and overvalued.

@@barryallen6927 rates are at a historically normal level now
@knpstrr
@knpstrr 2 месяца назад
@@barryallen6927 yeah, better not invest, or better yet you should try to time the market. Last 12 months with "high" rates the return is 29.6%. First year of investing over this time was a negative return. Cannot time this stuff, just invest and keep investing, it works and is better than sitting on the sidelines or trying to pick lottery stocks

Barry, where can I get the info about the return of S&P 500 over 100 years or the return of 10-year treasury yield over 100 years?

Inflation adjusted, 10% is a great return; especially in times where inflation beats the market like 2022 or 1973. Though, I wouldn’t ignore a potential 1000% stock.

It's ironic that neither Warren nor Charlie would buy shares of Berkshire if they had a lot less money than they have.
@DarkoFitCoach

Yes cause berkshire growth days are behind them. When a company is small they can grow. Whena company is almost 1 trillion worth then ot needs large fish to feed on and there arent any large fish around to feed on. Like with animals we dont see an animal size of a airplane and with companies the same

It's quite sad to hear that. Berkshire has become like Gulliver when he arrived at Lilliput
