You don’t purchase SUVs for gas mileage you simply purchase them for size, cargo, and passenger space. Most SUVs this size will get 20 or under MPG. This is a fine automobile.

nope. This size SUV in 2019 should get over 24mpg on average. Getting 18mpg is like the 1990s

It is a fine automobile. Its definentky better than a Nissan, it wasn’t built by GM or Ford, it qualifies as being a vehicle so it’s not a fiat/dodge, it’s more practical than Subaru for the price point and practical applications and space. It’s just that the CX-5/9, 4Runner, highlander, Pilot, RX, and MDX are all better choices and of those, only the 4Runner was as bad or worse than the Atlas MPG. At the end of the day, it comes down to, does the car meet your needs? And does the cost of owning the car overtime offset the cars practical use. In which case I would argue that any of the above are better choices than atlas in that most of those will be problem free for a long time and will still be rolling well into 200k or more miles.

@@Y10Q Because, the VR6 engine was designed in the 90's. Sure, it was perhaps improved somewhat, but it's an older engine design. I get about 22 mpg at 65. Some people are ruffer on that pedal, so you cant generalize on fuel economy.

@@Wolfgulfur What's wrong with Ford. Trucks and SUVs are their strength. Sure, they had trouble with the 4 cyl. Turbo GDI Explorer, but that's not surprising. A small turbo charged GDI in a big and heavy vehicle is not a good idea.

We have our 3.6 SE for 37k miles and two years now. No problems and we love the ride and space for our family, especially on long distance journeys. The gas mileage should be better but the ride is buttery smooth. We also appreciate the 6 year bumper to bumper. So I am not concerned what happens the next 4 years. The Atlas also feels very safe.

@bmw803

The reason why the 3.6L is harder on gas is that the VR6 engine is an older design, so it's normal for when it was designed. But, better than the 2L turbo GDI 4 cylinder. No worries about carbon clogging, intercooler icing and the extra strain that engine will take. The VR6 will last longer with fewer problems. As for MPG. I get about 22-23 at 65 mph. 20-21 at 70.

The only thing I don’t like about my Atlas is the gas mileage. Took it on three road trips with grandchild and was very comfortable. Love the moon roof. That was one reason I bought VW instead of Toyota or Honda. Didn’t want a car everyone around here has. GM or Chevy. A lot of room to put husbands wheelchair in back. Plenty of leg room for tall people even in third row. Bought the Launch model so I got everything I wanted and didn’t spend arm and leg. Best warranty plan. Agree with the review. Space is excellent, nice legroom for 3rd row and driving dynamics are good for the class. The steering doesn't feel so loose, feels nice and precise. Good trunk space behind 3rd row and when 3rd row is down there's a lot of room. Gas mileage is poor especially in pure city driving but that was to be expected and is only a couple mpg behind the comp. Problem I have is the puny gas tank of 18.6 gallons. Wish it was 21 to 22 gallons so that there was 40 to 60 miles more of range.

I own this exact model and color. For the first year, there were at least 3 recalls that we were called in for. None of these affected us directly thankfully, but it was annoying to have to go in to make sure our vehicle didn't have the problem, other than that and the sub par fuel economy (this is not good for city driving, fuel economy does much better on the highway, better than listed) it is a solid family vehicle, felt roomy, reliability confidence and great technology. If you do mostly highway driving I would recommend this vehicle. For city people the gas mileage might start to wear on you..

I love our 2018 Atlas SEL. It has performed exceptionally well. Only problem was a battery replacement under warranty. I intended to purchase another Atlas but they only come with a 269-hp turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder. As a retired mechanic, I will not be going that route. I believe this is a huge mistake for Volkswagen. Earlier 2.0 engines have been problematic. Even though I am not sure this is the same engine I do not like this trend in the automotive industry. The 2.0 is not enough engine for the Atlas

Same here, got the exact spec and color as the video presented here. Besides the recalls that has not affected us directly have had no issues. We have it and an electric vehicle in our garage. It will most likely be the last ICE vehicle we buy based on how the industry is going. Since we got the electric vehicle the Atlas has been getting less usage, but still has utility we can't replace, so we will have it for a very long time...

If you only plan to keep it one year, then buy Volkswagen; but any longer beware. I loved how he brushed off a handful of recalls and lousy/flimsy sunroof as if it was nothing, since it all done under warranty. That's not exclusive to VW. Most makers have some issue. A sunshade isnt a big deal other than inconvenient, but even Toyota had major fuck ups such as fuel pumps, blocks cracking, fuel gauges and other smaller problems, it's just part of owning a car. I have a 2018 VR6 Atlas, no problems so far.

I don't like the one I drive to work every day. Poor gas mileage combined with a small fuel tank mean that I have to fill up every other day. The one way commute is 56 miles. The seats are leather, but hard. And despite is large interior space, it isn't very usable because the seats are smaller. So i can't slide from one side of the seat to the other like in my F350. I might add that I'm 300 pounds, so that's a factor, but the other guys in the van have problems with the seats despite being smaller. In fact, one guy is pretty short and has problems reaching everything. The second row bench is hard and not a comfortable seat. Again if the front seat was like a bench he could slide around. And if the rear seats had more cushion they might be better. As far as the sports car ride, on a 56 mile southern California traffic commute, a luxury car ride would be much better. Feeling all the irregularities in the road on my 2 hour ride is pretty miserable. The traffic is pretty much crowded and steady so there's no fun in the driving. Its either comfortable or uncomfortable. The van we had before this, Buick Enclave, was a much better commuter ride.

I'm leasing my Atlas as it is a new model with no history. I really liked the interior space and seating allowances....especially the back seat leg room!!! This is the reason for getting the vehicle. HOWEVER.....So far....after driving for a few weeks.....I found I can't see anything but the rear view out the sides of this vehicle at first glance!!! I am startled almost every time I look to check traffic conditions at sides of me. Very confusing especially when turning left.....cannot see the radius area while maneuvering the turns! One could nearly whack the rear view mirror off on a median post or even jump a median curb while turning left in this car. The side rear view mirrors need to be LOWERED!!!! Also the side views are confining over the driver shoulders both driver side and passenger.....the head rests are in the way. The light warning on side rear view mirrors are worthless to me. I hate the voice warning!! It is startling to hear "WATCH OUT"!!! I've had this vehicle for 4 months and cannot find a seat position that allows proper view from windows and at same time read the dash window where speed is shown at 50mi. and above as top of steering wheel is in the way.....even after adjusting the wheel position (which is minimal). I'm too frustrated and uncomfortable driving this vehicle to ever purchase one. I will turn it in after lease and buy something else.

Love everything about my wife's except the in town fuel range. Hasn't given us a minute's trouble and highway comfort is wonderful. It chews up interstate better than our 2015 Yukon XL. The highway mileage is decent, if not stellar. But in-town, you visit the gas station every. other. day. I set myself reminders every night to see if I need to gas it up so I won't hear my wife complain about "that stupid fu*king car!" It's at least one gallon smaller than all of its competitors. That was a terrible place to skimp. It's a shame because it's a comfortable mid-sized SUV that handles better than anything this big has a right to, without sacrificing comfort.

Look at all that plastic under the hood. That will last a long time.😉

I really wanted to get one of these earlier in the year, but we ended up getting a 2018 Pilot more due to my wife's insistence. I don't feel so bad now after reading all these comments. Truth be told, I really do like the Pilot we got. Style-wise, much rather prefer the Atlas (not so much the 2019), but again after seeing all these comments think I made the right choice.

Looks good but it's a lemon. But then again no one I know buys German vehicles for their reliability.

Sure everyone needs to buy VW, AGAIN. How would they pay the fine for screwing people, otherwise.

First time VW owners, beware! Volkswagens drive great and employ great technology, but long term reliability from the vehicle and a lack of support from dealers make it a love/hate relationship. Historically, I have owned 6 VW’s and 2 Audi’s, and they all start having problems around 100k miles. I currently own a 96 Passat TDI that lives in my garage that runs periodically through the year which I have to have serviced by an independent because 2 of the 3 local dealers prefer to work on the Warrantied models. I am envious of my wife’s corolla because it has 250k miles and the A/C still works along with everything. However, rear doors will not open because of the inner plastic parts are cheap. A/c stopped working a long time ago, and both front window motors have stopped working fir the second time. Be very Leary

I have 185,000 miles on my 2013 TDI JETTA and no problems. They only replaced the intercooler as it iced during cold snaps. Plenty of TDIs that have 500,000 miles and still going.

if it only gets 18mpg, you might as well get a full size SUV. Much safer and more comfortable.

This vehicle has a lot of bad reviews. Built in USA vs Mexico not good. Consumer reports rated it poor be careful that's a lot of $$$$$$$

@@bmw803 I know bruh but the VW is cheaply made. Key word "cheaply" ever since production went to Mexico quality went downhill. If you don't believe me go and take a look at the atlas then sit in a pilot or Highlander.
