Erin drops by to chat about riding the mountain bike trails in Bedford Reservation. We had never ridden our bicycle there even though it is pretty close to home. Erin rode her Salsa Timberjack and I was on my Gunnar Rocktour. Were these the right bikes for the job? Would we hop in the car to come back here and ride again?

Looks like the kind of trails in the 70’s when I would bomb around the woods with my friends. Nice to see a more “natural“ trail than the “theme park” featured MTB trails of today. Thanks for taking us along.

I like the modern flow trails but not the modern parks with all the artificial features(so people can justify their suer-expensive bikes). Cheers!

Honestly it gets better as you ride it more. Once you find some flow it has a different feel and experience. It can be ridden as a fun paced stroll through the woods or a great course to get a workout in. Hope you come back again! (I created a 8 lap segment if you are feeling spicy 🌶)

good to see other trail networks. 20-30 min drive to a trailhead if it's a good trail is well worth it.

For Bedford its more common to start at the Egbert parking lot which is larger and has water, restrooms, etc. It is more downhill from there than the Dunham Rd parking lot, which is on the more difficult trails and a solid uphill start. I compare Bedford closely with Medina as it is more old school rooty trail, without a lot of elevation. You can link together Bedford and East Rim with the bike and hike trail to do 36 miles. I prefer flow trails like East Rim or Hampton but Bedford is in my rotation of trails. They did just suffer a lot of tree damage from the storms last week and are currently closed. Cleveland Metroparks maintains the trail and allows some volunteer help.
@TimFitzwater
@TimFitzwater Месяц назад
A few people mentioned starting there so we will try that next time. When I go to East Rim I ride there so getting to Bedford after would make for a really long day!!

I'm glad you made it out to Bedford. It's a regular after work ride for me since it's between my office and home. I always start at the lot you parked at and climb up to the other trails. It saves the best descent for the end! I mostly ride mountain bike trails so I regularly drive ~30 minutes to get a good hour of riding in, though I have gone further out to Tuscazoar and Vulture's Knob too. If you haven't ridden Lake Milton yet I think you'd like it. The best way I can describe it is like the lakeside trail at West Branch but around nine miles long. You'd probably drive there since it's a bit down 76 towards Youngstown. Well worth a visit and I think there's a brewery nearby too :)
@TimFitzwater

The Bedford trails are great. They have something for everyone for the expert riders. They can ride really fast and that must be fun. I have no idea what that’s like, but it sounds fun for older folks like myself. It’s great because it’s not that hard and there’s not a ton of elevation, I have done the entire loop once casually, which was pretty brutal. You guys are obviously in very good shape so I wasn’t that big of a deal for you. I also did a race there where I did the loop twice and it was really hard.
@330_Crew
@330_Crew 26 дней назад
The Cleveland Metroparks only permit hand cut mountain bike trails, no machines permitted. That’s why CMP trails are generally more rooty and natural. West Branch was built using the same technique. Hampton Hills and East Rim were machine built with excavators. That’s why those trails are smooth and flowy with few roots. Rocks gardens are man made. If you like the experience at Bedford, you’d like Royalview MTB in Strongsville reservation.

Another great video guys! Here in Gainesville Ga. I have access to two different sets of mountain bike trails that I can access by bike from home. I typically combine, back roads, greenway paths, urban gravel, single track & some medium/ lightly technical mtb trails to form a ride from 20 to 30 miles long. I ride a 26” wheeled hard tail and it performs perfectly for this type of adventure. Unfortunately, the cycling scene here has been dead for decades so it’s very refreshing to catch your vibe on this channel!

Metroparks does the trail maintenance on Metropark trails A good place to start is at the Egbert Picnic Area and when you pop out onto the All Purpose Trails you can usually turn left and get to the next trail loop….if you start at the picnic area you can choose to bypass Touchstone & Mars if you dont want to hit the more challenging stuff you started out with

I would think a beginner rider who is very athletic could easily ride that trail with a trail worthy mtb like Erin's Salsa. This would be a nice little workout for a good rider .Might be a good single speed trail . Even a beginner rider with patience the right type of riding company could handle that trail I believe. There is no shame in walking what you don't feel comfortable riding . DTE in Chelsea Michigan was developed as a regional destination trail especially if you include the Potawatomie Trail just down the road. A trail would ideally have to be more then 15 mile in length to classify it as a destination trail. You could make a day of riding by stringing together shorter trails of 10 mile or less. Done that, it's fun hitting all those trails with different personalities.
@TimFitzwater
@TimFitzwater Месяц назад
We had talked about riding the other trails on our way out of town but I know Erin was a bit tired and Dylan broke his freewheel. I agree - probably have to be reasonably long to make a destination of it. Can always string together other rides though . One of the reasons I like riding rigid to be honest.

I drive from Youngstown area to Bedford alone about 3 times a year. As a seasoned mountain biker of 35 years and quickly approaching 50, I would agree that Bedford has an old school feel. Generally if you mountain bike with a bike GPS you should add a wheel sensor if you desire accuracy. Tight twisty single track that wraps around itself has issues with satellite tracking. You’ll see false trail lines as the gps tries to fill in gaps between satellite pings.

I recently tried taking my gravel bike up that same trail head, turned around pretty quick 😛The problem is, Hampton and East Rim are so good, it makes it hard to justify driving 2 or 3 times as far to ride something that probably won't be as fun (in my opinion). Still, variety is the spice of life, thanks for sharing! I have to explore more of our local trails too 👍

To clarify, I actually live in central ohio, but have family in Akron. My life circumstance changed last year, so I don't have my "home base" on North Hill anymore. It would be worth the trip.

I've been to Bedford Reservation once, last year, and started riding where this video starts - the wood bridges were in bad shape. Multiple rotten planks. Once I put a foot down on one of the bridges and broke right through the plank. Needless to say I haven't been back.

I used to start from Maple Hts. on Dunham Rd., fly down Dunham Rd. hill, over the bridge and into Bedford Res. Then climb up that hill and go to Egbert Rd. then turn around and come down pretty fast down the hill and then back up Dunham Rd. Those were great times.

I ride these trails often - although they were closed last weekend due to the tornado that went through there. I’m not sure if they are open at this point or not. Anyway, I ride my fat bike from house across from John Carroll University through Pepper Pike down to Hawthorne Parkway. Then do the Bedford MTB Loops and ride home for 35 ish miles over 2 1/2 hours or so. I don’t really have mountain biking skills and my fat bike has no suspension, and it handles the trails fine. There are only a few sections by Dunham Road (Topstone Loop - I think) where I have to put a foot down.

The voice over format makes an interesting video. My youngest son took me there once for my 68th or 9th birthday to spend some lone time with me and yes it is a unique patched together set of trails and I enjoyed riding them. Have you tried Royalview yet? If not I highly recommend it. It is mostly elevation changes and switchback trails and will definitely open your lungs. Do you usually drop the pressure in your tires when you ride trails? I used to run at around 15 to 16 psi to deaden the bounce.

I don't have a car, so I take the train (Context: I live in Belgium) if I want to go ride somewhere that's not at my doorstep. Unfortunately The nearest place with worthwhile trails for a mountainbike is an hour train ride, and I just almost never get around to it. I use my MTB maybe twice a year for actual mountain biking, and the rest of the time I just ride my old singlespeed city bike or my vintage road bike starting from home. I've been meaning to get to some really beautiful places to ride for over a year now, but it just hasn't happened yet..

Where I live, there's not great bike infrastructure, but I can ride out to a few mtb trails if I want a good 5-10 mile warmup, dodging traffic. But the main issue is that only 1 of our local trails is 8-ish miles long. The rest are 4-5 miles long, so the ride to and from is most of the ride unless I want to put in lots of laps. Since our infrastructure is so bad, I would say 95% of the mtb riders drive to the trails around here.
@robbchastain3036

For sure, just do lots of laps until sundown and then you'll be ready for the next Gravel 100. 😀
@TimFitzwater
@TimFitzwater Месяц назад
When I ride to the MTB trails I rarely see anyone else who rode there. It is a mix of the infrastructure and a lot of mountain bikers not wanting to ride mountain bikes to the trails. Which is why I am so often under-bikes on the MTB trails - because I want something I can ride there! I do totally get it though - if the ride to the ride is going to suck the fun out of it better off driving.
