In this short video we see a class 5 conductor being terminated in a distribution board… would you use ferrules…?
This video has been designed to go on the RU-vid shelf as a short video in portrait mode.
Videos are training aids for City and Guilds (C and G) and EAL courses Level 1, 2 and 3.

in some places, the rules say that ferrules are mandatory only when a screw goes directly in a multi strand wire (class 5). it can be argued that a "drawer type" terminal gets more contact area without them, same goes for lever type connectors such as wago 221.

Due to the clamp style terminal of the OCPD my view is that there is a better connections without a ferrule, however for screw type terminal I would most definitely use a ferrule

On this "clamp" terminal it's ok, anyway I am always using ferrule.

The most important is to the pull test. I usually estimate at least 1kg every 10A. So 16A breaker I pull whatever wire 1.6kg and wiggle it multi times. I'm finished only if the screw does not need retightening. Thick stranded wires are prone to slipping out.

Why replace one connection with two? Ferrules introduce an additional point of failure.

Have you ever had a failed connection because of a ferrule?

No need its a "cage clamp terminal"

Ferule not needed. I'd double it up like this. My generation was trained to do this to maximise contact area. That was pre torque screwdriver as well. Your wrist was your torque setting. Then a tug test on the cable to double check.

At my place of work we always use ferrules for this type of termination. Although I understand that there can be some 'wiggle' in the termination, especially with 1 or 1.5mm. Sometimes use a fork crimp as an alternative.

It is senseless fitting ferrules on solid core and coarse stranded wire (approx 7 strands). Only needed on fine stranded wire. You can fit a ferrule on small gauge solid wire if the terminal is too big. The screw in the terminal will then make a better contact with the ferrule rather than push the small solid core to one side.

Ferrule at the end it will be good practice either stranded conductor start to split out reduce cross section area 👍

Doubled-over and cage type terminal definitely. I wouldn’t on a screw type.

I’d leave it bare, I’m not a sparky but deal with ferrals in my day job and sometimes they just don’t get the clamping force that bare wires get and can pull out

I would use ferrules on stranded makes a better connection and looks a cleaner job

I'm a panel wirer I'd say it's neater but not essential.

Ferrules can be nothing but a good thing as identies the cable taking the quess work out of the equation for the next man.

How does a ferrule identify a cable?
@MsThrasherzombie
@MsThrasherzombie 6 месяцев назад
@@posei3960 ok. Unless I've got it completely wrong which does happen. Ha. They are the things number the cable. I.e L34. Then a drawing will reference it's use to and from the board. Please excuse my ignorance.

@posei3960 6 месяцев назад
@@MsThrasherzombie nope sorry 😂. Ferrules are the end crimps. More commonly known as boot lace ferrules which is odd as the ferrules on boot and shoelaces are called aglets
@MsThrasherzombie
@MsThrasherzombie 6 месяцев назад
@@posei3960 ah yes. Bootlaces I am aware of and think they're awesome and should be used. It's strange though because I work on substations and they call the numbers and letters they add to the cables ferrules. 😂 Thanks for the school lesson.

The wiring regs here would stipulate that you have to you ferrules for that category of wire
