Marriage is not a contract, just because the government has gotten INVOLVED and forced marriage licenses on us doesn't negate the fact that marriage (prior to the meddling government) was always a binding of two families and lives. I hate to hear people refer to marriage as a contract. That is the reason so many people treat it so frivolously and get married and divorced on a whim.

Hence why so many marriages back in the day, may have lasted years, but there was a lot of disrespect between them and infidelity. Women were oppressed in a number of them too. So, marriage is an issue that various generations have had a hard time understanding. Also look at arranged marriages, which is not what marriage is about either. But it's cultural for a number of couples.
