Would you want to sound like Kurt?

A RU-vidr has spent a ton of money and several years trying to capture the exact guitar tone Kurt Cobain used on an album.
In the interests of science and entertainment I kind of appreciate that.
But unless you play in a Nirvana cover band or something, why would you want to or need to sound exactly like Kurt Cobain?
I kind of touched on this in a recent video about guitar players chasing tones of famous guitar players instead of sounding like something original.
Anyway I thought I'd talk about this today.

Big shoutout to everyone who commented and didn't watch the video all the way through 🤣

I watched the video the entire way through, and it's not like there's a huge revelation? You start out saying that you don't want to copy a guitar tone and therefore you can't understand why anyone else would, you tell us you don't like grunge and proceed to mispronounce Kurt as Kirk, then repeat these points for 8 and a half minutes. 🤷‍♂️

i think tone chasing is a surprisingly valuable asset for dialing in your own tones. understanding exactly what made a song sound a certain way is great for taking the parts you like. what aaron has done with the ir pack is just make those sounds more readily avaliable to the public, which is especially valuable with in utero given how unique the guitar tones on it are. just my take.

See I don't think this is about sounding exactly like Kurt to make music just like Nirvana, It's a way for people to get closer to the music that moved them and made them feel something. I'd highly recommend actually watching some of Aaron Rash's videos, it's a cinematic act of passion at his highest moments. And also the original music he puts in his videos is also very good. Not everything is about being a rockstar or original, sometimes it's just about wanting to get new perspectives on art you love.

I've watched the tone chasing videos. Its not about become like Kurt or sounds like Nirvana. Its about recreate an iconic tone. You can recreate certain tones while you have your own. You can learn a lot from chasing great ones. I'm not a gearguy so for me those videos have a great amount of information how to find my own sound. How to search for It. Personally I don't want be Kurt or like him. I honestly respect his work and love his style but I have my own. I wanna express myself not copy others. But at least I can learn from them. Also Aaron has spent a tons of cash to recreate so its not really a scam of anything to make a IR and share your work. He is a cool dude.

I bought the pack, it sounds great. Its cool to be able to recreate tones of songs you really enjoy, or using the base of what Aaron has done to create your own tone. Its just fun! I think also the reason people are so 'obsessed' with this albums tone is because of Steve Albini's raw production style as well as the album using some very weird amps/guitars. One of the main guitars was a veleno, which is all aluminium! I can understand why it would be confusing though if you don't like the genre or think the tones of the album aren't worth trying to get.

In terms of content Aaron went on a journey to figure out how those tones were achieved. He also made a pedal called The Engine to replicate a specific tone from one of Kurts recordings previously. The Aluminum guitar project he did really produces the acoustic/clean mix tones you hear on In Utero as well. A lot of people just didn't know why those tracks sounded the way that they did. This is a lovely tone pack to add to a varied tone library for anyone using amp modeling.

Because you're teenagers in Australia in the mid 90's and you get recognized way too early in your career, only for people to ignore your best work in 2002... Seriously so many stories of bands rising to fame way too young and burning out.

You had me at scott Ian's chugging. But seriously, I'm playing around with my guitar and amp and it's fun to nail a tone from my heroes. Albeit for just a song or so. Spend my life hunting tones; I don't think so

Because this is a hobby for 99%, OR they are creators doing it for RU-vid revenue or IR pack revenue. Duh.

You had to do it didn't you. Now I'm going to HAVE to do the 'why Kurt is a better guitarist than you think' video 😆 I know that's not the point you're making, I see what you mean, why do we want to sound like anyone else? It's a good question. From my perspective, some of the most fun I'm having at the moment is downloading Boss Katana patches and for the first time ever being able to hear myself play some of the songs I really love and they actually sound really close to how they sound on the track. There is something hugely satisfying about that, if you don't get it I don't think I can explain it, but when there's an iconic track, let's say the intro chords to Purple Rain or the intro chords to Rooster, or even Welcome to the Jungle, things that pack a real emotional punch, when you are suddenly able to almost reproduce that yourself, at home, you have this moment where you feel like you've reached the summit of Everest, even if your playing isn't that great, the SOUND itself is there, you've conjured the spirit or soul of those songs, it's as close to a spiritual experience as I'm ever going to get.
