Katie Couric talks with Virginia Tech sophomore Derek O'Dell, who is one of the witnesses to the massacre that left 33 dead on the school campus. He was wounded by the gunman. (CBSNews.com)
my heart goes out to all the people who were affected by this horrible tragedy. what i don't understand is how people continuously think that it would of been a better idea to lunge at the person rather than just staying frozen.
Bless his heart. It's a miracle he and the students who didn't get hurt or injured survived. It's a sad thing to see happen, and I don't blame him for not going to class. The world is a crazy place, and there are many sick people out there. It's scary, especially in this matter..yet we just have to prepare to protect ourselves from harm.
Wow, just like Columbine and other schools that went through shootings, it must've been truly horrifying. Not to just hear the gunshots, see people get shot and killed, and to just have your life flash before your eyes. I couldn't imagine anything that can be more tramatizing and horrific. ;( I wish all this madness and violence would end.
Derek you are an incredibly brave young man - you and your peers in are in the thoughts and prayers of countless others. What a horrible thing for anyone to have gone through. May you find your way through this ordeal with the help of your family and community.
I remember when this went down... So bonkers. He rambled on about cognac, expensive clothes, spoiled rich kids, and such in a rant to the news on video...
oh, he's really choking up at the "bringing back too many memories" bit and the whole time he looks like he's really struggling to fight back the emotion. i hope he can deal with the pain and make as much out of his life that he can.
if you were in a situation like that, your body would freeze, and you would of entered survival mode and find the nearest spot to hide. you wouldn't be able to think because your mind is still processing the fact that there's a gunman in the classroom. a situation where probably everyone in the classroom has never experienced in real life.
further more, the fact that your classmates, who you've probably talked to and become friends with are being killed right before your eyes? lunging at a man with a gun while hes re-loading is easier said than done. and i bet any money that almost all you people who say that it should of been done would of still hid under that desk just like Derek did. like someone previously said. this isn't Lethal Weapon 4.
Cho had planned to shoot on the Columbine anniversary on 4/20 but was literally filled with so much rage he was incapable of waiting 4 more days and did it on 4/16. That’s how scary it is.
Alright lets try and make this easier to understand. Imagine you are in a room, someone walks in shoots about 8 people, drops his empty clip and reloads within 5 seconds. Now im assuming he would have shot people in front first, so your in the back of the room. Your telling me you would have run through the chaos of what just happened and try to tackle someone with a gun? Not knowing how many clips he has in the first place.
Yes, he was so cowardly, to be afraid of a maniac with a loaded weapon, while you are soooo brave. I mean, what bravery it takes to criticize a shooting survivor from behind an anonymous screen. Go to VT and say it to the face of all those football players and Army cadets, that is, if you have the balls.
nobody here is saying or calling him cowardly, you citing 'others' or even mentioning this word in this context is offensive enough. This word should not even show up in this comment section. This guy is insanely brave for maintaining this conversation while his arm is still healing and everything is still fresh, unbelievable that he was ready to do that so early.
too me its like flight 93.....You do what ya got to do. I guess id rather be a bad victim than a good one. If any1 wants to talk more..i have a few of my own ideas on this.
I agree but, most of these kids have NEVER been shot at before, or had been in this type of situation. To attack the guy while he was reloading is way easier said then done.
and if you dont outlaw guns then every depressed teen, pissed off girlfriend, curious child, senile old man or drugged up maniac can.. if someone desperatly wants agun theyll get one, legal or not.
If there's never a reason why bother point out he didn't have a reason? According to you there's never a reason to kill anyone, so he's no different from any other example.
so you are surprised because of this and what happend with all the irak´s people it doesn´t count i mean it´s not fair for both sides but 32 persons against millions of people including children so think about it
Nice guy, that unlike the murderer hasn't been influenced by the thousands of fictional murders he's seen on TV and shoot-'em-up video games. You need to ban more than just the gun's. It's a sad society where couples making love are censored but Rambo is family entertainment.
ok, this guy says the gun was a 9mm and another survivor said it was a 22. honestly in such chaos, people have that much curiosity as to what sort of gun a shooter has, and has time to identify it?? really though, it's like these stories just get made up to be glorified in the media. i feel sorry for what happened but being sorry isn't going to change the fact that it happened. rather than looking back at it hopelessly why dont people start looking for real answers.
GOD had nothing to do with those people dying. God gives free agency. that means freedom of choice. They chose to act in a violent matter. Dont ever think that God enjoys watching his children die in cold blood. We all have our own right to react to things. It sucks that people have to react towards others in such a violent way. Again, My thoughts and prayers are out to those who need help to find a positive way of solving there own problems.
Why is everyone arguing the details of what happened. NO ONE and I mean NO ONE knows what they would do in situation, until they are faced with it. Get over your egos for a few fucking minutes and accept they did they best they could in the split second they had to decide. Love and light to all effected by this tragedy.
Why are you people arguing the points of what they "should have" done. Support now, ask questions later. Those who are questioning what victims did in the face of danger WERE NOT THESE VICTIMS. Get over your egos for a few fucking minutes and realize what a tragedy this is. Brave souls did what the could to protect others from FURTHER harm. Love and light go out to all.
Its said he knows what "can" happen. not what "will" happen. Also if he knew what was going to happen and he stopped it from happening, then that would change the future. He always gives us the freedom to choose. He always will. You now I'm not trying to pick a fight or BIBLE bash with you, but I will suggest to go read it again from cover to cover.
It is something that I need. your right. but not just all I need. He can guide me on the right path to avoid those situations. However, He willnot stop someone from breaking into my home and hurting my family. Therefore I will always carry my concealed weapon with me. I'll be DAMNED if I were to let someone hurt me or my family for there ignorence and violent act.
no matter how tight security is someone will always get by, the tighter you make the "shell" the softer the flesh will be. you might not understand so i will explain -> The right to bear arms is not why there are gang fight shootings all the time.
ya the dude that hade the blew dress shert on how got shoot in the arm u are one of the most bravist piopel i have ever seen and all the peopl that wer whet u are such good peopl i feel so bad for all of u
sigh - its something you would call stupid cause you would cower in fear, i dont call it stupid i call it brave. if you need clarification its all in the previous comments
@tehnoobshowloverlol It would be hard to do that with guns in his hands but as he was reloading maybe you'd have a chance. The truth of the matter is people, almost any person would run for their life, but if they had somehow managed to work together and rushed him down of course less lives would have been lost but no one would do this because the fear of death would leave you cowering in fear.
A person with actual moral standards will never, EVER stand up for anyone who decides to kill in cold blood!!! Yes it sucks that the kid was maybe bullied. I grew up being bullied. I have no respect nor do I feel pitty for this person.
One armed student could have saved them. Just one. Let this be your wake up call. Get armed, and carry. Allways. Fuck the law, the law can't bring back you or your friends and family...
OH!!! I see, ABSALUTELY RIGHT!!! I will say this about everyone. No matter how much you've been bullied, There is no excuse to kill inocent lives. My prayers are with are with those who have to deal with bullies. I pray god gives them the wisdom to make appropriate desisions to deal with there problems. But also prayers go out to the ones whom have suffered in any way from the negitive acts of those who decide to kill to feel like they need to get even that way.
this is the same day as the shooting? so, he just saw or heard EVERYONE shot in his classroom... then gets his own wounds treated... then- gets all dressed up and sits for interviews on scene same day hours after the massacre. German class, great question, Katie. Talked to Katie before your mom.
