I appreciate how honest Wout is in his interviews. When he is disappointed, he’ll say so….. When he feels like he’s not meeting the expectations he’s set for himself, he is open about that too! For me, makes him easy to root for.

Two things. First, this is the happiest I have seen Wout Van Aert all year. It has been a frustrating year for him and I think he is finally in the form he has wanted to be. Second, I have been a long time fan of Robert Gesink who I call the happy domestique. No one works harder than Gesink and the work he did last year at the Vuelta pacing and controlling the peloton was phenomenal. He has picked right back up again this year doing an incredible job in his final year before retiring.

Loved that - he tried hard repeatedly to get onto the breakaway early on but the peloton always shut him down so as the commentator on Eurosport put it he said to himself ‘I’ll make you all pay for it now’ and went for the solo lead 1.8km out and forced everyone in the sprinters teams to expend huge energy to catch him. I’m convinced his action forced Alpecin to burn some matches early on in their sprint train and weakened Kaden Groves final sprint when he could not catch WVA.

You didn’t break down any of the technical beauty and genius of that sprint? The way WVA went early, surprised Groves, got the bike length quick and THEN rode (left) to the barrier to box him out, and made sure to hold it there so that Groves had to pump the brakes to then come around the other (right) side to find a line and by then he was dead in the water. Absolutely genius sprint by WVA. You owe me, next one won’t be free Chris.
@ChrisHornerCycling
@ChrisHornerCycling 28 дней назад
I didn’t believe he went early. How much longer would he have to wait when it’s 210meters to go and the best so sprinter so far in the race is front of him already? I just thought Wout was better/stronger/faster than Kaden today. The move to the left I thought was going to be close to a relegation penalty truthfully. I wouldn’t have done penalized him but if Kaden was any faster/further ahead I would have. Wout always likes to change his lines and somehow get away with it even when he should have been penalized(TdF stage with Sagan many times). But today he won fair and square. Just 🤔😜🦋👊

10:30 Might be worth considering moving Remco Evenepoel up to #3 with his recent success. I know Primoz crashed out of the TDF so we didn't really get to see that head-to-head battle in the high mountains, but Remco looked better from what we did see and the two gold medals are a bonus.

Honestly. Everyone might want to test Roglic’s fitness but Iwouldn’t want to be the one in the wind doing it. So they better use their teammates to do the testing because if you are wrong then Roglic is going to make you pay for that. That's the great thing about La Vuelta, it's almost the last chance for some riders to do something big. Wout will probably fight for the green jersey, for Roglic I think it's his last chance at a grand tour. Sepp has also had not a great season and Almeida and Yates also have a very real chance for the biggest win of their careers. Set to be a great race

Chris: it seems clear the race leader should do no work on the front so to keep team members fresh for the climbs and summit finish. But I was curious why you decided to emphasize that point in your closing remarks. I was wondering if I’d missed something I should have considered. In other words, who should be making the race hard on the front to soften teams up for the climbs? Sorry for the long question.
@ChrisHornerCycling
@ChrisHornerCycling 28 дней назад
Good question. It’s hard to know who will do the work tomorrow because I am not inside the teams seeing exactly how good everyone has trained and what their fitness is before the Vuelta started. If I knew exactly how good Roglic was after his crashes during the TdF then I could answer your question because Roglic’s form is key to how you would race tomorrow. If he is super fit and you personally attack him he’s going to make you pay for that. So better to force his team to work hard and hope you see Roglic not at his 100% best form and then attack if Roglic is suffering and you have some help out there from some of the others. The first mountain stage is always a bit tricky during Spain. During July it’s easy to know who’s riding good before the first mountains starts though. In short I would be very careful tomorrow and my plan for the finish of the stage would be decided as the race goes on, not in the bus before the race starts. The first part of the race though I wouldn’t be afraid to have a teammate in the break (assuming I am not on Bora) who could possibly win the stage if the break was allowed to go all the way. 🤔🦋👊
@Gowalkabout
@Gowalkabout 28 дней назад
@@ChrisHornerCycling Thank you, Chris. And if you have time for a quick follow-up. If Roglic sent someone up the road, would the leader send someone up the road with him to sit-in case he's needed on the final climb?

@charlestoddsullivanforpres6628 28 дней назад
Tomorrow will be interesting. See if Bora takes the front. I have to wonder though: how long till Roglic hits the pavement and will it affect the race? He's had better luck at La Vuelta, than TDF, so maybe he takes control tomorrow.

I was thinking this after today's stage and thought you might have the answer. When Wout won the Mt Ventoux the TdF he beat other top climbers. Why can't he do this during this Vuelta? My thoughts are that he trained hard to be able to do that and was on his very best form, whereas now he trains more for having the power on the flat and in TT's, maybe he was a bit more lightweight then to be able to have that watts to weight ratio the top climbers have to have and it is difficult for him to stay down at that lesser weight, though I'm not sure this weight part of my theory holds any water. Even if he knows he can't the race (even if he could win some mountain stages) why tell the opposition teams this, why not pretend you're going big and play the bluff card to draw out other teams and then work harder. Could some of this be due to what happened last year with Kuss, Rog, and Jonas and the fallout there was from that? Would Love to know your thoughts 🦋🦋🦋
@epincion
@epincion 28 дней назад
The question is can he do a ride like he did on Mount Ventoux three times a week in the last two weeks? He is a big guy and heavy and the best climbers are skinny and light.
@ChrisHornerCycling
@ChrisHornerCycling 28 дней назад
Wout on his TdF 2022 form could beat most climbers here. But Roglic is here and no one here can match Roglic if he has his best fitness, “if he has his best”. And doesn’t crash. Wout I think would have already won stages one and two if Wout had his best form. But tomorrow will tell us a lot more. 🤔🦋👊
@mattpotter8725
@mattpotter8725 28 дней назад
@@ChrisHornerCycling I think Yates, Almeida are a problem as well. I'm not really expecting Wout to be able to stay with the top GC contenders on that final 20% kicker, mainly because of his comments and how punchy that climb is. It will be interesting to see how Sepp Kuss does against the likes of Rog up that final steep section.
@mattpotter8725
@mattpotter8725 28 дней назад
@@epincion I wouldn't expect Wout to be able to do it day after day if the climbs are steep, but it they are only 4-6%, which they seem to be on stage 5, 6, and 7 it's more in his range I would say, but I'm not sure he's got the fitness to go day after day even when it's undulating, but I guess we'll only know after today's stage.

Sepp Kuss is a light skinny climber. Van Aert is bigger and more of an all round rider. This version of the Vuelta has a ton of serious long steep climbs which will favour light weight climbers like Kuss and Roglic.

Only pure climbers with good TT SKILLS win GTs. Period. Wout can win all the TTS and hilly stages he wants and then lose 5-10 minutes on high mntns

Wout is not known as a climber on the long (often >15km), steep (>10% average gradient) climbs that La Vuelta is known for and often two or three in succession. Wout admits that this is because he is too big and heavy - which why he is such a good sprinter. Certainly on a good day he can win such a stage but he is less likely to be able to do it daily.

Wout has absolutely no chance of winning La Vuelta. Whatsoever. Have you seen the parcours? Why do you think he has suddenly become a GT GC contender?

Nope. Won’t do it. Remco has been super no doubt. But I would still put Roglic third. My list is dependent on each riders 100% fitness or one rider doing something that I thought the other couldn’t do. Roglic has been injured a lot and I believe Roglic on his best form could do what Remco has done. Which has already and then some. 🤔🦋👍
