Just to clarify, the speaker mic showcased here is the optional RSM-400W, which is an IP67 submersible unit. The radio is IP55 (water jets) like the other 9-Series radios. This new model includes a new Priority Channel Quick-Jump feature, Scan Advance (the only 9-Series ham with this feature), a new much brighter and focused LED flashlight, 1.25m "220 band" RX, and stiffer knobs to avoid accidental changes (better for SHTF/EmComm, etc.).

I am “that guy” coming from GMRS. Just got my Ham ticket. Have two Wouxon GMRS HT, one with the SHTF preprogrammed. Been happy with them, quality HT. Having them preprogrammed is a positive in my mind.

Posting on this video because I purchased this exact radio as my first radio from better safe radios and trying to learn more about ham so I can pass the general on the same day I pass the tech. I operated on an original Harris AN/PRC 117-as an operator/infantry in Afghanistan for the USMC in OEF back in 2011. So most of what I knew was operating and rolling crypto; I definitely was not taught enough about the nomenclature, math and theory aspects enough to pass the general on my first go. Anyway, after all research said and done (including this video,) I decided on this as my first ht. My personal favorite feature on this radio in particular was the covert screen mode for night ops because that was the difference between life and death in my old line of work. Your proof of higher wattage than most other ht’s was my second push. And even though I’ve worked with radios before, I personally thought the preloaded channels was a very nice touch to this radio because I wanted a radio that had emergency freqs and I don’t know how to program these radios. I’ll learn, but it’s nice to not have to learn immediately before being able to listen to those stations. All that and Mark’s character at bettersaferadios steered me to the kg-un9px. He replied to my order with an email within a day with a personalized reply and that just shows dedication, respect, love for the art and community, and so much more. I will likely buy this as my first amature radio. I am currently into gmrs and will be expanding over to ham as soon as I have time to take the test. Since I'm new to ham and am not part of a ham community, I will greatly benefit from a pre programed unit. I was looking for the right radio to get started and I think you nailed it for me. THANKS!
I have KG-UV9D Plus that I've owned since 2016. I own several other HTs from Yaesu and Any Tone but when I go on the road it's the UV9D that goes in my pack. It's my favorite HT and I will be buying another when the time comes.
Jason, Great Video. Sorry, I was preprogrammed to say that. I likely would have bought this HT as my 1st radio since unit+accessories tallled supplied versus need to purchase , this radio is $100+ cheaper than what I bought. It has 9+ watts instead of 5 and most importantly, I had no idea what to program since I was new - this radio solves that problem. Keep up the good work!
The latest CHIRP now supports writing to the memory AND settings locations for the KG-UV9PX, which allows you to edit the transmit frequency limits (chirp-next, which uses python3 and wxgtk)
Preprogrammed. I think having a nice set of preprogrammed channels is a pretty good thing. It may give you some that you may not have thought of looking for. Others may be worthless.

I love both this and the GMRS version. IDK if I'm going to get one, the other, or both. The fact they are preprogrammed (pre-programmed) makes everything so easy to listen to.
I got the radio. Not being a ham ht guy it's only taken about a week of trial & error to figure out how to scan all the preprogrammed channels. Oh & set the squelch. I installed the software I bought with the radio & was able to copy all the channel settings from the radio to my laptop. I sat on my front porch tonight & ran a scan. I only picked up some GMRS chat from a repeater in Marietta, GA. on channel r17. I live between the ATL. airport ant the tracom in Fayette County GA. Shouldn't I have heard some airband? Then I tried my old quarter wave I have had for years couldn't even get the GMRS. So what duck & vehicle antennas do I need to get to upgrade my listening possibilities?
This radio really rocks with the Diamond SRH77CA antenna. Programming of this radio using the internal menu through the keypad might be challenging for newbies. But once you get the hang of it it's not that difficult.
Pre-programmed, As a visually impaired Ham, I like the idea of a preprogrammed radio. Plus I like the white on dark backround. Depending on the cost this might be my second HT. 73 KI5USH
Preprogrammed - I appreciate the info in your presentations and the local HAM club that I joined. Preparing for the test, soon to be the new guy. Retired fireman/medic and I like the idea of a preprogrammed radio, I can add what I need with experience. I will spend the $$ to get what I will need and want, although a buddy gave me a Baofeng to learn with. For me, having Bluetooth is valuable for hearing protection (hunting & shooting) and to connect to my Bluetooth hearing aids would be great! Perhaps they will add it to the next gen of this radio. Bought the Anytone on your recommendation. Pre-programming would be helpful, but figuring things out is a significant part of the journey. Thank you for your input along the way.
AnyTone and Wouxun are two of my favorite brands. They’re rugged and capable, but also more affordable than the Japanese brands. AnyTone is great if you’re doing digital, and Wouxun is great if you’re doing analog. Especially if you’re doing anything out in the field, and not just from the safety of your ham shack. The Yaesu FT5DR or Icom IC-52a would be expensive to replace if damaged.
@@seanwieland9763 Will agree with you on that I have accidently dropped my (or let me rephrase that because I think the only fault of the Anytone HTs are the belt clip ) on the ground multiple times and even let my grandson run around with it and it doesn't have a scratch on it.. I have to agree on the 'pre-programed' comment about programing the radio manually makes ya learn a bunch about the radio. 73 from Odessa, DE K3MOT

Still waiting on a Wouxun KG-UV9GX from them. This sounds like the ham version of the same radio, preprogrammed for ham instead of GMRS. It would likely be a significant upgrade to my Baofeng UV5R.

Pre-programmed. I think it is a great feature to get it pre-programmed. You could just make a copy of the channels before messing with it and use as a restore I hope it is Chirp compatible?
It seems to read/write channel data with CHIRP, but there is one new menu item that's tripping up the menu settings from displaying, but I'm sure someone will figure it out soon. :)

The UV9G is a GMRS radio, so that's the biggest difference, but the new "X" versions (there's a UV9GX GMRS also) add in 3 new dark screen modes, 1.25m "220 band" RX, a new priority channel quick-jump feature, a brighter, usable flashlight, stiff knobs (for SHTF/EmComm), and the 9PX finally adds the Scan Advance to the 9-Series Ham line for improved scanning.
Thanks for this video! It is very interesting, how this is preprogrammed-- channels that one shouldn't be transmitting on are set to transmit elsewhere to prevent interference. I love the display too!
I have the KG-UV9P, which essentially doesn’t have the dark backgrounds. Great starting radio. Love it! 👍🏻 Tip: Setup one channel in channel mode, and leave the other in frequency mode. Good overview of the radio. Simple and to the point. I own the KG-UV9P. Which is a Very nice radio to own. I would recommend their new version knowing how well mine works. I also own their KG-905G radios. You’re right about the products, well built.. “ Preprogrammed” Thanks, BK
PreProgrammed. The KG-UV9 line has been on my radar trying to decide between it and the Yaesu VX-6R. Have some uv-5r's and a RD-5R for DMR. I want airband for the overlook at the airport but having a 220 handheld like the Yaesu would be nice. Currently only have 220 mobile and its a pretty active band here.
If tey put an ICOM id5100 in their vehicle or home they then could use the crossband repeat to reach out. Around where I live handi- talkies are useless unless you are by your vehicle or the repeater. It looks like a nice radio just the same.
preprogrammed? oh I wish, I've been licenced for a few years now and I'd have one of them. I have the Wouxun KG-UV8G which is 4M and 2M but not preprogrammed at all, that's a nice selling point
Great video. I am looking to buy my next radio and you have some really good videos on radios I am tracking. I am a retired Marine Corps Master Sergeant and I have lots of experience using military radios. This HAM stuff is fascinating and I want to get my HAM license.
