Great craftsmanship as always but I really like the way you incorporated the button snap bags. It looks like they really belong there, which is obviously the objective.

Incredible as always Marc The Wood Whisperer. I actually enjoyed the 2 part "long" videos... your attention to detail is second to none, both in the craftsmanship of the piece and your filming and explanation. Boy that Walnut looks so great with the Danish oil / Teak oil. Glad the "BOSS" stepped in a nixed the Lacquer idea LOL!

Do those hinges really work? It looks like you close it with barely any force.

+Gadget Addict they work perfectly. If they didn't work, the lid would just fall on its own.
@Jsc30

+The Wood Whisperer At the end, kind of looked like the lid doesn't close flush. When you leaned on it you pushed it down as it was opened maybe 1/16th inch?
@tonylorentzen

421tigers Thought about that. One idea would be to recess a small neodymium magnets into the wood and glue a thin wooden cap on the top of it. A pair on each side would solve that problem and keep the lid down.
@philipcraig956
@philipcraig956 9 лет назад
421tigers I used these hinges on a toy box and at first, they would always lift the lid just a little bit so it wouldn't sit closed. However, after the box was used for a few days, it sits perfectly now. They probably just need a bit of use and they will be fine.

Great job. I like the hinges you used. I have used some friction hinges bought through McMaster-Carr. The ones you used are a little more expensive, but the mount looks a lot more secure.

You did a really nice job with this. I think this is a really handsome design and you implemented it well. I've heard you shy away from calling yourself a designer in the past, but at the end of the day a good design is in the details and the way people will interact with the piece, and I think you've really succeeded on both levels here. It shows a good deal of design maturity and finesse. Good job.

I just built this beast and first want to thank Marc: the plans and guidance have both been awesome. I only found one part I don't like, and a few parts that I messed up that might help others: The canvas bags Marc used shrink a lot when washed-- like they no longer fit after one wash. I found some fine looking white nylon 30x40 bags for like $7 on Amazon. As nice as the canvas bags look, practically all of them had bad reviews about not being pre-shrunk. I left my stock slightly thicker than 3/4" (~20mm), and the torsion hinges can only accommodate 3/4" I was able to do the weave glue ups without ideal cauls or CA glue-- for the front panel, I slightly rounded the ends, and slowly eased them into place in the groove, gradually adding clamping pressure. And used Titebond Extend to be safe Even though you wipe off the excess Danish oil, there's very little tolerance for slop: the drips can hide between mated strips, and then slowly trickle back down onto the show face minutes/hours later (ask me how I know) Make sure the casters have enough space to freely swivel 360 degrees. They need to be placed closer to the inside than on a flat-bottom cart because the bottom panel is recessed, and notched for the legs.

Beautiful work as always, Marc! I wish I could find walnut or a similar wood in Brazil for a reasonable price. I did a kitchen workbench with 2 shelves from Jequitibá-rosa wood e few months ago. Unfinished it looks like the walnut you used, but it needs stain to get to walnut color after finishing is applied. I'll get some pictures I took and post in the Guild site as soon as I can.
@MichaelOlsen-Engineer

Beautiful work Marc! I grew up with lots of woven furnature, and do not remember any of it ever being prefinished. The one time Grandfather tried it, everything stuck bad and the finish was ruined. Your finish is excellent. Your wife definitely made the right call of no laqure. Only thought I have is to use small gromments and simple "tea cup" hooks instead of the snaps, espcially if you choose to take the bags in and out every time. Spas are easy to damage and wear over time making them harder to use than simply dropping the groments over the hooks.
@thomasarussellsr
@thomasarussellsr 6 лет назад
Dang nice project. I might consider installing the bag front, sides, then back taking up the excess with the drawstring, but the removable feature will let the bags be removed for washing the bags as well. This will be most helpful in an active household where sweaty clothes can put odors into the bag (active parents and teen boys especially).

Looks awesome. Just recently watched a movie "War". there was a scene in the Japanese Yakuza compound where they had a double sliding door in a weave pattern. Looked awesome, and reminded me of your hamper design. Might use what you did and turn it into a sliding privacy door at the new house.

@woodwhisperer
@woodwhisperer 9 лет назад
+Torsan1977 That's due to the torsion hinges. They aren't mortised in so they tend to raise the lid slightly. I installed clear rubber bumpers on the underside of the lid and that takes care of it. Makes it quieter when rolling over tile too.

nice work, looks like the lid is having a little problem staying shut without your elbow holding it down. Did you fix that? Don't want to spend 50 dollars on hinges if they don't work perfectly.
@woodwhisperer
@woodwhisperer 9 лет назад
+Danny Fernandez because the hinges aren't mortised, they cause the lid to be "level" at a point slightly higher than the top surface of the box. So with a heavier lid, the lid would simply sit at an angle. In my case, I just added some clear rubber bumpers to the lid which not only takes up the gap, but helps the whole unit roll more quietly over the tile in our house.

Even on our hottest days I rarely need all three units on and usually swap between the front two units on the low setting. Insulation for the win! :)
