This knife seems to be well thought out by the designer. I respect his field work in it. I believe he believes in his product!! That says a lot. He wanted it to be right before he sold it. Thanks for the review Dave!! Love your videos. Thanks to Habilis as well for such a refined product. Thinking seriously about it! God bless and may you guys have a good New Year

Now that I have used this tool in all 4 seasons I can say it is fantastic. The JRE leather sheath is made very well. The tool itself is well thought out. I have used it for fine work, hard work and even taking down a few trees. The only issue I found was I had to spend a bit of time sharpening that edge out of the box to make it razor sharp but I think that is more preference as it was fairly sharp when it arrived but I am a big fan of shaving sharp blades. A dull blade will get you hurt. I piggy backed a Mora 2 on it with some other things so I have everything I could possibly need in one package if every stuck.

I think its great to have a knife like that with many extra features. One can always put another smaller knife piggyback on the sheath of a knife like this and have a super good combo, ready for anything. I personally enjoy a big blade, however that's not for everyone. Cool discussion and I like the ideas behind the design.

Got this knife in the mail last week and I really like it. Didn't love the edge though, so I took it back to a real scandy grind and now it's the sharpest blade in my collection. Haven't had the chance to test it in the field though. Definitely looking forward to it though. Thanks for the vid, it's why I bought the tool.

Honestly, I love the high carbon on this knife. I've been using it for over a month now and high carbon offers quite a few benefits over stainless, and honestly isn't that hard to maintain as long as you're actually using it and not leaving it on a shelf somewhere.

This video sold me this knife, thanks! Can't wait for it to arrive! What I do want to say though is that their is a knife that is the similar to this design but is thinner (1/8" instead of 3/16"), is with the notch for the firesteal and without the slightly different shape (anvil) for battoning. It's $110, The Pathfinder Trade Knife. The Sheath is different, inferior.

The best Wilderness / Bushcraft knife is the one in the hands of the most experienced bushman. Tools are all too subjective and based on the individuals preference for there to be a best one. I know David stated "Best Wilderness / Bushcraft Survival Knife?" as a question, but i am just saying. None the less its still good to see people weigh in on what they think of the tools they have experimented with as long as they speak truthfully and unbiased.

***** agreed ,about the knives,to me there just isnt a favorite.i just make sure whatever i buy fits my need,and does the job.uality doesnt have to cost alot.i bought a Brades hatchet1 and a 1/2 lb,an old wool blanket,and a collins 4lb axe head...14.00 ! call me a liar if you will,i do not care.its all true.flea markets/yard sales...thats where to shop for theses kind of things.is this knife a good one?i am super sure its a great knife,...i just refuse to pay that kind of money,its steel and wood(or man made stuff)and yes i do understand about manufacture cost,shipping,yada yada yada ...i bet he could sell them at a greater rate for 1/2 the price and make the diff. up in volume.i could be mistaken though,i was once before....

Some of the best knives I ever had were knives I picked up at junkshops and garbage bins. lol I have this knife as well and I absolutely love it. It's on me everyday, practically everywhere I go, and I use it extensively in the woods and on the farm. $200 Is a lot but this is an incredibly strong and well built tool. :)

I was looking for a blade that could be used as a chopper. I ended up getting the TOPS Bushcrafter Kukuri 7.0 because of the somewhat greater length & weight, as well as its more pronounced blade curvature [Well, I'm also a fan of Gurkha Kukris as a blade-form, in general]. Choking back on the long handle gives you about the reach of a hatchet - yet you can do detail work as well.

I love your site but there is one problem I'm spending way too much money on the produces you show like this bush tool. I did not know what knife I wanted for my bush survival pack sheath I wanted to build till i checked out your knife reviews and picked the KaBar K2 which to me is the kind of tooth you need to survive with. Now I will have this one for my bug out bag. Thank you for all your hard work in supplying us with this information. Mike

i was very impressed with the knife i now carry a KA-BAR KUKRI as my big utility knife and a small thick bladed buck which works for me and is affordable for a working class person such as myself , i was very impressed and being a primative backpacker it has several benefits from a bushcraft point of view but unfortunately it comes down to cost . how hard will it be for everyday working class people to afford ?

Say Heah David, We live and learn, that Habilis Bush Tool has a awesome Anvil towards the front, I would like to check with the designer because I don't think it's like that just to baton on the Anvil but when you pinch your fingers close to the edge you have great control when carving with a big knife, I heard William Collins talk about that and I saw a Tribesmen carve a bow with what appeared to be some sort of machete, but he also pinched that machete close to the edge and used it like a small knive. I think that Habilis Bush Tool is narrow enough at the Anvil, please check with the designer and see if I'm right.
@paulie4x1
@paulie4x1 9 лет назад
Say Heah David, Like I mentioned before, I keep coming back to this video, something about this knife that I like, I was able to be in a possition on a ASH-1 with a Green American Flag Cerakote(both handle and blade), even though I got my new Busse Combat ASH-1 (mag handles 6 1/2" blade at .320 thick), comparing the two knives, there's alot of similarities except for the anvil (sure their different but very close), but I'm so happy you feel it's the best survival tool, because of the similarities, but I still have it on my soon to get list. Everytime I'm ready to pull the trigger, blam, something alters my getting it, like I'm still waiting on my Rodent 3 and 5, hoping my next knife would be the Habilis, blam, I get a e-mail that I won a drawing to buy the new Busse, but I also semi committed myself to the Ka-Bar Potbelly and the Parangatang for my summer Long Knife, but I think they will fall into colder weather use, I was going to get the Habilis Tool and the O.K.C. Bushcraft Machete as a combo, but I will get them eventually, Thanx David.

I just got my Ka-Bar Johnson Adventure Potbelly I like the steel of the 1095 CroVan, if the Habilis Bush Tool came in the CroVan I would jump on it in a heart beat, but anyhow their very similar actually my Potbelly reminds me of a Nessmuk Style Knife on steriods and has some Butcher Knife Characteristics.

As far as reinventing the wheel, what do you think my motorcycle would look like with stone wheels? I might switch out. :P As far as that Sami design, it's okay but it doesn't have the exposed belly that I love on this knife for dressing game, it just does a wonderful job.

No problem. 1095 high carbon is very popular but s30v and other modern stainlesses will do fine. Regardless of which you choose, remember to maintain your knife. If you go carbon, use tuf cloth on it to prevent rust (you could also use that on stainless knives) and if you plan on using the knife for food prep, some food grade oil like olive oil, vegetable oil, or mineral oil is advised.
