Hello, thank you for the comparison. I was surprised that blue edges on Samyang photos was not mentioned (most obvious on bridge photo). It was super distracting to me and the solid reason why I would pay more for Sigma.
Was the crane really blue? Or is that CA at 9:17? That would be a nightmare in video. Thanks for pointing out that Pav had issues with his copies. So did a German reviewer. Samyang hand pick review samples (maybe all manufacturers do this), but their production is very inconsistent, I would only buy from a shop with a no frills return policy.
As a hobbyists automotive photographer I have the last version, I love it, works great for stills, and only once have I had a issue where I had to switch the camera off because it just did not seem to want to focus at all, just a silly wobble I think, again no issues with my 18mm F2.8 or 35mm f1.8.
Any updates on the long-term views/review that you mentioned here? I'm weighing the Samyang against the Sigma, and would really like to be able to save some cash if there aren't any major issues to report on the Samyang.
I have the first version of the Samyang 85mm 1.4 and I’m trying to decide if it’s worth upgrading to the Mark II. I read that sharpness is about the same between the two versions due to them having the same optical design. I do realize that the auto focusing is better in the newer version but for me that’s not too important. I’m not a pro like you. What’s your thoughts?
Oh, AF is so important when you need to get the shot NOW, before the kid/pet/insect moves away. In video, fast accurate focus and no hunting, please, and Silent motor. Even if it’s not a pro shoot, for street/candid shots, a good lens gets out of your way and just works.
love the video and great review! love the amazing images and videos you've taken and it makes me realize once again, it's the shooter not the gear that matters. Although i wish they still or would make it for the rf mount
I love my Sigma, so will stick with it...focus is amazing! However, I do own the Samyang 135mm f/1.8 and that is just about as good as the GM lens in sharpness.
@@tristanwilhelm9600 The Sigma might be a hair sharper, but not by much. I won't say that the Samyang 135 f/1.8 is a GM lens but it's about 95% of the GM.
@@jaipalreddy4894 both are very good. I don’t shoot wildlife or sports, so don’t have a super fast focus response need, but it was solid. I found the picture quality to be great, especially for the price; however, I’ve since moved to Sigma 85/1.4 which (to me) is an exceptional lens.
I just want to say that I own the Samyang AF 135mm f1.8, Samyang AF 85mm f/1.4 FE II Lens , and the Samyang 35-150mm f/2-2.8 AF Lens (Sony E) I shoot on a Sony a7rv , I ALSO HAVE THE NEW SIGMA 70-200 F2.8 AND THE LATEST SIGMA 50MM FI.4 ART LENS ALL THAT TO SAY I HAVE NEVER HAD A SINGLE ISSUE WITH ANY OF MY LENES. THE SAMYANG 135MM AF F1.8 IS ONE OF THE SHARPEST LENSES I HAVE EVER OWNED :0. THANKS TOM !!!!
I have one of the original manual focus 85mm Rokinon, and the much newer AF24mm and AF45mm. The improvement in image quality and the silent, fast AF on the newer lenses is really good. I think they are the best bang for buck in FE lenses. I am looking forward to getting that 85mm
I enjoy these comparisons. However if you give a point for the entire catrgory (image quality for example) the outcome more often than not appears to be lenses are equal or nearly similar. May i suggest awarding points for each category (9/10 vs 10/10 in image quality for instance) that would make things much easier to differentiate lesnes.
Thanks for your suggestion. I have already considered this idea (and many other scoring methods) but unfortunately it's not as easy as it sounds. I'd essentially just be picking a number out of my arse and saying 'this lens feels like a 9/10 to me". Based off what? The easiest method I've found is the simple "is it good or not?". If it is, it gets a point. If not, it doesn't. Ultimately though, my scores and my review in general is just something to help you come to your own conclusion. My word is not gospel and you should always pick a lens based on your own personal requirements and budget. So if my scoring doesn't sit right with you, that's fine, make your own scores using the results I've provided.
@@TomCalton Your system is also "future proof" because it's just based on head to head. One lens will always be better than the other. With a rating, over time the numbers become meaningless as last year's 4/5 is next year's 3/5. I like your way of scoring.
@@TomCalton tom i seen in one of your short reel clips, you mentioning a 85mm you thoughts was the best budget 85. i cant find the clip. any idea of what it was? you bassically said you thought it was better that the sony, and then viltrox and maybe.... one more was mentioned.
I'm shocked at how much you downplayed the difference in chromatic abboration. That's a HUGE difference, and to test myself, I looked at the sample photos where you said it isnt a big difference in the real world, and could right away pickout the Samyang based on the CA in the background alone. Very easy to see the Sigma has superior detail and color fidelity.
Also insane how at 8:25 you give both lenses equal image quality when those corners are the Samyang are straight up below average. Literally a 400 dollar Panasonic 85mm would blow through that quality. Wtf your videos are usually very unbiased and fair, this one seemed like you're showing us the color blue and telling us its red. Sigma destroys.
I also don't understand, at 7:01 he says "In the real world I really didn't find any fault" with the HUGE blue CA obiviously in background. Did he try to give a hint that because he can't say anything bad about Samyang in this review so he just said the opposite and give us the sample to show what he really wanted to say?
@@cklppt That's a good find. I didn't even catch that. Man that is so extreme...yeah this video was a weird one. I like to assume the best, so let's just so best case scenario he mustve been severely severely sleep deprived. I don't know if I've seen a review gaslight me this much ever on RU-vid.
As a hybrid shooter, i had to pick up Samyang, because, noiseless auto focus, and actually no distortion, Sigma imho has seriously big problem with distortion, however in still images is not a problem, profiles in LR doing job. both lenses has very fast auto focus, nice bokeh overall really good performance, but Samyang has one more advantage, is half of the sigma price.
Distortion is easy to correct, but the pixels you crop are your loss of resolution. So it's unfair to compare sharpness without distortion compensation on. Think about it - It's a matter of figuring out whether distortion is better corrected optically or electronically. If Sigma decided that it's better this way, they believe that their approach is better for the image.
Personally, Sigma just has a superior build. Therefore, all day every day. (Not to mention that believe the Samyang still needs a docking station to update firmware which is an extra cost)
Thanks for your video. Didn't expect the result either. I'm happy with my 18mm Samyang, so I would go probably choose the Samyang as well. But, thanks to your review, I'm so happy with the Tokina 85mm f/1.8, I wouldn't buy something new atm. :)
@@charruaporelmundo well ;-) Right now I’m using sony 35mm 1.8 and 85mm 1.8. I like the results but I would like to “upgrade” and perhaps switch to 135mm I think that 85mm is to close to 135mm to have both ;-)
@@pawelmod3292 I have the 135 and I preorder the 85 🤷🏻♂️, of course I already know the most used will be the 85, but every single time I see what I get from the 135 I just get in love with those images. Doing Bernizer with the 135 is just amazing!.
At 7:01 you said "In the real world I really didn't find any fault" with the HUGE blue CA crane obiviously in background. (Or is it blue because you color graded?) Did you try to give us a hint that because you can't say bad things about Samyang in this review so just said the oppsite and give us the sample to show what you really wanted to say?
And 8:26 "Samyang offers the best edge to edge sharpness" @@ Is the edge of Samyang really looks sharper than Sigma in this sample? I really can't tell.
My SY 85mm was the 1st lens I've ever had that has had issues. The MF did not work at all. It really turned me off of SY. They only have a 1 yr warranty as well.
Humour is also subjective. Or absent altogether in some people apparently. Also, ironically, a thumbs down is just as useful for boosting the performance of a video as a thumbs up. So thanks 👍🏻
Close, but in fact the worst quality a person has is where they take themselves so seriously that they can't identify when others are simply messing around and making a joke and then take it upon themselves to villainise others for not sharing their exact same world view.
