In this video, I'm doing a 100 mile loop to see what the 2021 Ford F-150 Tremor MPG is compared to the F-150 Powerboost hybrid. Is the Tremor that much worse than the hybrid? I find out.

Not sure who needs to hear this but I'm a numbers freak so at 3mpg difference, this is what usage would look like; all variables being equal: We are assuming both tanks are 26Gal at an average of 3 dollars per gallon, that we are filling our tanks 3 times a month, and that gas prices don't change up or down. Tremor: 19.5mpg x 26 = 507 miles. Ecoboost: 22.5mpg x 26 = 585. At 3 fill ups a month that's 36 tanks a year. Since they are both 26 gal tanks, they'd both cost you 2,808 dollars for gas. Tremor: 6.5 miles per dollar, Ecoboost 7.5miles per dollar. At the end of the year, the Tremor would've traveled 18,252 miles at 36 fill ups. The Ecoboost 21,060 miles at 36 fill ups. If we compare apples to apples, the Ecoboost would get 2,808 miles extra for the same cost as the Tremor, dividing everything up, you'd be saving a measley 374 dollars over the entire year. I don't know about you, but 400 bucks is what you spend 2 weeks eating out. So yeah, I'm taking the Tremor All Day!

I have the powerboost and get good mileage around town..on the highway it performs like a typical 3.5 twin turbo- if you drive at 70+ you will see your mileage drop…if you tow at highway speeds it is a typical half ton…but 20-24 mpg around town ain’t nothing to sneeze at! And I bought the hybrid for the 7.2kw inverter/generator on the tailgate…I can boondock my trailer anywhere (yes and use the a/c or heater etc) or power my home in a power failure or hook up my table saw or other equipment…it’s a great feature….

I’ve owned my powerboost for about a week and a half now. Largely influenced by your video series btw. Over 60mph the MPGs drop fast. It’s basically another 3.5L at that point. Truck aerodynamics really limit what the hybrid can do. If you’re mainly doing interstate or highway commuting at 70mph+ there’s honestly no reason to get the hybrid. We live on a rural two lane highway though, speed limit 45-55. We routinely have seen 24-25mpg trips on that road, and as high as 29mpg when stuck behind someone going slow.

Yup have had the same experience with my Coyote powered F-150. First tank I ever did, drove a trip that was pretty relaxed (avg 55mph maybe). I was stoked to get ~22mpg. Since then it's been more representative of my driving style and speed (70+) and I've noticed at best around 20mpg doing that. Not much you can do when you're pushing such a big vehicle through the air.

the tremor is actually a bargain. That 402a package is basically like a Lariat trim. If you price out a Lariat with the FX4 and similar options with the 3.5 ecoboost. The price for the Lariat fx4 is almost the same as a 402a tremor between $65-68k the biggest difference is that a Lariat you can get it in any cab and engine and bed configuration. Tremor is only crew cab short box and 3.5 ecoboost.

@JuanMartinez-gu8sh
@JuanMartinez-gu8sh 2 года назад
Not really. They all come from the factory with the AFE Bias set at default value of 1000. This is a setting in the computer that calculates mileage and can be adjusted for tire size or axle ratio changes. Since the tires range from 17-22” based on trim level and 3:15-3:73 (or higher) you can see there can be a lot of variables. My 18 2.7 STX was 1.2mpg and my 21 PowerBoost was 1mpg optimistic. I reset the base factor and got the computers to get within .2mpg MOST of the time. It’s not a scientific thing since fuel quality (winter vs. summer blends), temperature, and foot pressure have some say in the whole thing but it’s a lot more realistic once you spend a month or so of full-ups as you get it dialed in. It takes a few adjustments. Let me know if you want to know how.

The important question is, what's the point of a Hooter's with a drive thru? Kind of defeats the purpose. As for these trucks, read about their performance & reliability on something that actually test vehicles, i.e. Consumer Reports. You wouldn't even consider an F150, especially at these prices. I'd wait to buy unless you're driving a clunker, because both the Ford and Toyota Turbo V6s are the wrong answer to the same problem. Toyota needs to develop a Dynamic Force V8, and then we can talk. Turbocharging is a crutch and everybody knows it.

A quick question, if you know the answer: In the video you referenced using 87 octane, which I believe is the Regular Unleaded, and the selection on the left side of the common 3 selections, with Premium on the right. Where I live and generally get fuel here in Utah is at the Smith's chain, and at least in my town the Smith's Regular Unleaded, the one of the three on the far left, I'm told is 86 octane, not 87. My question to you, is that okay for the truck? Or in that case would it be important for me to use the slightly higher Octane middle selection? Thanks.

Hey. Found your review again. Continues to be worth the watch, even multiple times. A few questions, if you see this after all this time that is: Could I and would it be a good idea, to get a little wider offset, maybe another 1" to 2" offset on both sides beyond the additional 1" the Tremor already comes with? And if so, could I also get body colored fenders added that are wide enough to align or nearly align fully with the outside edge of the wider offset tires? Kind of Raptorizing its look a bit. The 7" added offset of the Raptor, 3.5" on each side, is too much for me, but I would like a bit more if possible than the added 1" offset that comes with the Tremor. And lastly, do you know, could I get this Tremor, its most loaded package which I think is the 402A, but could I get it fully blacked out, exterior and interior? Thanks.

Wheels are pretty easy to find and you can add backspacing. The fenders would be a challenge for sure. You can get the Black Appearance package on the Tremor via Ford.com build and price tool. You have to switch to the 5.0L V8 engine instead of the 3.5L V6.

But I understand that the 5L V8 is naturally aspirated. Do you think that extra power of the 5L V8 might make up for not have the turbo feature? Any thoughts on this issue? Yeah diesels are great on the highway, but at least for the Powerboost, that should get pretty similar fuel economy even in city driving. When you consider some of the advantages for the hybrid (like onboard 7kWh power), it certainly has it's advantages.

I wonder if the Hybrid would get closer to the small Duramax if it had closer to the same rear end. 3.73 at highway speed is running much higher rpms than if it had what most GMs have with around 3.31 rear end. I would think at highway speeds the Hybrid would get much better mpgs but maybe not with the ten speed.

I have the fox 2.0 kit and 33" tires. 32.5 are stock so essentially stock tire height but they are saying 14.5 is all because of the leveling kit.. You showing the Tremor gets 19.5+ really helps. 14.5 isn’t normal for PB with a level kit, but the tremor isn’t leveled so it probably benefits somewhat over yours for that reason. It appears to have even worse rake than a standard 4x4 f150.

Not interested in paying $13K or whatever for about $3K worth of options in that package. A little too much gravy on that steak, imo. I'm constantly amazed by what SOME people call "reasonable" prices; my HOUSE cost $19,000, worth about $38,000 now with inflation. No way is a truck costing $65K before tax "reasonable", I don't care if Toyota, Nissan and GM are similarly priced. They're all higher than a kite. Sticking with my future Maverick plan, F-Series has gotten out of reach for almost all Americans. I've had 3 of them, all ordered new from dealer, (one was an F-250 I still have) and never paid more than $21K, including sales tax. The 19-20 mpg shown in this video might be better than the 18.5 I get with my F-250 with a 351 V8, but it's not worth $35K more than my truck.
