Nice video Mark, as an ‘old salt’ - the British terminology for mooring lines is Bow and Stern lines and Forward Backspring and Aft Backspring. Under normal circumstances that’s all you will need. If the weather is rough , you can double up the bow and stern lines , or put out Breast Lines at right angles to the quay forward and aft. When leaving the dock you ‘single up’ to one or two lines (whatever is needed due to the wind etc. ) So that you only have to let go the minimum at the last minute. Exceptional circumstances can require other procedures but that is the norm. As an ex mariner and retired pilot I’m enjoying your travels 😊

Thank you Mark and Fiona. Mrs R good Captain. Good stuff. 👏👏The longer the video the better😂. We can watch a bit, take coffee break then come back and watch some more great stuff. I have some suggestions about mooring and unmooring but I am not going to get nit picking. You are learning fast and all going fine. Yes good advice from your friend to try keep even tension on all lines. Some Ports have a lot of surging effect, and also when a strong wind is blowing the boat equal tension on all lines very important. If one line snaps then all sorts of trouble especially if you in a tight berth with other boats close to you. I am sure you watch some utube videos about berthing and unberthing boats but I have one suggestion. If you got free time cut out a shape of your boat on cardboard, only about 10cm to keep it in about scale then put it on your table and practice coming alongside and unberthing against the edge of the table. In this way you can visualise what will happen if you apply different things. You will also see that if you put too much tension on your bow line it will box the bow in, something that appeared to happen to you berthing. So from playing around with the cut out boat you will see how the lines all kind of work like vectors and you can see the resultant effect. In my opinion playing around and thinking in your mind what effect will happen if I do this and that then moving cut out accordingly will be good. May sound a bit funny but I used to do this with my trainee Marine Pilots in the office. I used to give them different scenarios and let them show me how they would berth and unberth . We used simulation programs for a lot of the in house training, same as you with your planes. This is a good time of the year where you are the sea is relatively calm and there does not appear to be much wind and current in the Mainers. Good learning grounds for you and Fiona. When you travel in the oceans even during summer it can be a different story. Your boat will be thrown around whilst underway and berthing and unberthing in rough conditions with wind will be challenging. I know you and Fiona will cope just fine. Nice bread your daughter made. Please ask her to send some by plane to me in Durban.😂 Cheers🛥🛥

Another brilliant video. I get excited waiting for the next episode! As a few others have mentioned, your spring lines should be the longest ones and by using a forward and aft spring you will reduce any surge along the quay (i.e. from the centre cleat on the boat, take one line running forward to a quayside bollard and one running aft). Keep sharing your amazing journey!

Tie the stern line on the port side, that will help hold the stern in and you may need to slacken the bow line a bit. Worth a try but without being there it’s hard to say exactly. In theory you have the springs tight and have slack in the bow and stern lines the springs stop it from surging fore and aft and I the bow lines allow the boat roll without bashing the key.

You need a first mate to keep up with all of the stainless steel polishing and floor cleaning for you. What I like to do when leaving a dock like this is with only the mid forward spring in place put the outside engine in reverse to pivot the bow of the boat out as far as I need. Engines neutral, Release the mid forward spring and both engines forward and away we go.

@AwanuiNZ
@AwanuiNZ 4 дня назад
We are going to put more effort into where we anchor so as to avoid the swells. Paravanes are ok but just more stuff to store. We are determined to keep the boat as clutter free as possible. Gyro too expensive at this stage. Finding a place where the bow is into the swell and stern tied off seems the easiest way. Certainly annoying rocking all day and night. I sleep well through it but Fiona does not.

It seems there maybe more fish life in Montenegro waters, it would be good to see some action with that rod I saw on the boat. Also, I wouldn't worry too much about your terminolgy Mark, ropes lines doesn't really matter but I do object to the back of the boat being called the tail. So far the sea floor seems pretty good. We try and anchor where others have commented on Navily which avoids that problem. If we were concerned we would have a line to the surface from the head of the anchor with a float for easy pick up. The rocks over here do not seem to be rough more smooth so the bigger problem is getting the anchor to set.

Mate the problem with your tie up there was very simple, you only had a forward spring out so the boat was doing what is natural to her, the stern, (tail in your case!!!), was being pulled off the dock by the forward spring. When you tie a ship/ boat up alongside to a dock you should have 4 lines out, 1 bow line, 2 forward spring, 3 stern line, 4 aft spring. What I would do if I was you would be to run your bow line and forward spring out that fair lead on the bow, bow line as per normal leading out ahead and the forward spring leading aft to a bollard on the dock just forward of midships. Then on the stern (Tail 😢😢) you stern line leading out aft as per normal and your stern spring leading forward to a bollard/ cleat on the dock just aft of midships. So now if you think about how she was laying there starboard side too, and if you had a stern spring out all you needed to do was put the port engine in eastern and the stern would have come in, then it would have been easy to tighten you stern line and she would have laid straight. If it was the other was and your bow was out just touch ahead on the spring and the bow will come in. You can also use that fairlead midships, with one spring leading forward and one leading aft, it dose the same thing but my preferred way is the first option because if you get a swell coming in and a surge the more scope you have on your springs lines the quieter the boat will lay. Draw a picture of a boat laying alongside with them 4 lines out and you will instantly see what I an talking about. Good luck mate,

Have you priced out how much would it cost to have a local maid to come in and help you do all this extra cleaning?
@AwanuiNZ
@AwanuiNZ 4 дня назад
Nope but it does cross your mind as it is continuous.
@zasde35

Did you looked into the active anti corrosion and active anti fouling protection and galvanic isolation, for the boat and the sea chest the cost will be payed back in a year or so , otherwise you will get a lot of cost to repair clean all equipment, sinks, what gets outside water in , i can not tell you how important this is ,and this beside the cost for haul outs for ant fouling jobs

Fiona, Mark had covid right, covid affects your smelling and taste, leaving you where you can't experience the two sensations as well as you did before being infected. ❤🧜‍♂️🔱🫠🇺🇲 cocoa,fla. USA.

Had an operation on my nose decades ago…very little sense of smell…has its advantages…but also not much taste. Eating can be a chore so it’s important to me what it looks like.
