Please react to this song. We used to sing it during the 2015 Fees Must Fall. This was when all Universities and TVET Colleges in South Africa had a national shut down where we fought for Free Quality Decolonized Education. Fees Must Fall was very similar to the Soweto Youth Uprising protest in 1976 protest.
One of the lyrics missed out on these war crowd is “ thina siyazalana “ means we are from the same womb black or white we a given birth by a women , we are all sibling , black or white ✊🏿
South African high schools are all about comradery and children into adults. That is why there is an emphasis on pride in your school and yourself. That is why we have these uniforms to represent yourself well and the school well.
@@amandavanwyk5661 when prince edward was made it was only for white people until Zimbabwe had its independence so they made that culture pf supporting rugby with passion and all heart .
Bruh, as a teacher in South African ... the comradery that this creates is intense... I'm telling you, a school will lose a match and still sing and chant like this after...
St Stithians Boys College is the school singing in the first and third video. It’s my school❤️ we call the boys wearing the half blue and half white blazers the war cry leaders (you’re right, they get us hyped). In the third video, the boys wearing light blue blazers have been awarded honors in a certain aspect (could be sport, academics, culture, etc... eg. rugby). The boys wearing the white scarfs are in Matric (grade 12, final year of high school) - it’s just a privilege. Finally, the boys facing away from the camera in the third video are who we call the dukes, they are pretty much the elite choir of the school and they do a lot of a-cappella. The dukes get to wear grey scarfs to show that they are apart of the group.
Amagwijo are great, just follow the others. Harmonious, don't worry if you can't sing. There are no people who can't sing emigidini, emitshtweni base nthlobeni
I find the energy in Southern African High Schools have the same energy. When you are in school you sing, it could be on school assembly, class assembly during school games. We Sing Sing Sing Sing 🎶 Shout out to 🇿🇦 🇿🇼 🇧🇼 🇸🇿 🇲🇿
True very true..During our school days sports, assemblies, singing competitions were just lit here in Botswana 🇧🇼 Kids now will never understand this because of covid 😢
10:37 That's the high school I went to! Pearson High School in Port Elizabeth, South Africa. Matriculated in 2014. A brilliant school and I'm so proud! We have a beautiful uniform. ❤️❤️❤️
I went to Queen's College Boy's High, in the Eastern Cape the heart of Xhosa culture so amagwijo were a part of being a Queenian as much as our uniform. Would give the world to go back in time.
One thing I've come to realize is that the lead singer doesn't always have to be a good singer. I cannot stress how much of a spiritual experience these songs are, NOW when you have a lead singer who sings with their heart you can get completely immersed in it, you can get completely lost. South Africans are incredibly spiritual people, it's amazing.
All South African middle school and high school sings like this and I really miss South Africa my other families and friends just moved in USA in California I miss South Africa 🇿🇦🇿🇦🇿🇦🇿🇦🇿🇦🇿🇦🇿🇦😭😭😭😭😭
1. That "lililililili" sound you hear, it's called Ululating. 2. When the boys in the Xhosa culture go to the mountain, they're going to get circumcised and become men afterwards. 3. All our high schools wear uniform. Rugby is a huge hype and the war cries spur the teams on. 4. Most boarding schools make attending sports events mandatory and there are even practice sessions slotted into school days. 5. Most expensive schools in SA, I'll just name top 5. Hilton College Boys- R320k a year($19k) Michaelhouse Boys - R300k ($18k) St Andrews Boys - R290k ($17k) Roedean School for Girl - R287k ($17k) St Johns Girls - R285k ($17k)
Siba y u gotta jack someone’s answer like that after all the correct he said u look for the only wrong thing ay black ppl everywhere are the same always trying to find fault
We, as South Africans, express our love, happiness, unity, discent, unhappiness and anger in song. Its also nice to see that white South Africans are taking part in our war cries and amagwijo in solidarity and allowing us to express ourselves the way we do best. When I was in high school we only sang those white chants 'we got the spirit, yes we do'. So this amazing to see.
Im still in 9th grade and went to a private school called Helpmekaar Kollege. I now go to Alberton Hoër that isnt a private school but the atmosphere in both schools is just out of this world. South Africans are just awesome
When I went to the military I felt out of place because I couldn't understand and sing along because I am not from the black culture but now😅🙆🏾♂️I am the one starting the songs because I love it so much 😅👀u will find ur feet quickly, even if u cant sing🤭🤣🤣
@@libertysibanyoni9662 we sing for a different reason bro🤣🤣normally when we singing it we going through the worse, so it helps us forget about our troubles🤣🤣🤣🤣
For some resson South Africans are just natural singers. We can work up harmonies without any practice. It amazes me who has lived in this country for my whole life.❤
Even in the military we be singing like this in SA🤭 These songs really get u through the worst of times. U need to come over here and experience it live bro😉
Some black children don't understand the POWER of their Blackness only if they stop SHADOW WALKING and stop being afraid of being who they are. CREATE MASTER PIECES WE ARE GREAT ARTIST,CREATE, CREATE, CREATE, HUM you can't get this sound no where else than the MOTHER LAND AFRICA, HUM,HUM,HUM
if you feeling the chills when you watching this on a screen then imagine if you were experiencing it live. proudest moment of any graduate when that initiation month ends
Back in high school we used to have this thing we did on Fridays after school where the entire school would go out to the rugby field pavilions and we would “speak to the mountains”. The term “speak to the mountains” came from the fact the our school was built on a mountain, and when we did our school’s ware cry we would be so loud you could hear our voices eco through the mountains. It would literally sound like the mountains are chanting back to us
Thank you for showing Africa as it is and not the dump that is shown in the media, Africa is a wonderful place and we are all very proud of it as Africans
The main reason I liked being at sports right here in Capetown. It made me adapt more to SA as a new highschool student from Zim. These songs will jus give u that pride, that African Pride
"Igwijo" is a Soldier's best friend in the South African Military. This tradition of singing amagwijo comes from the villages. It is one of South Africa's biggest traditions practiced by all the Tribes
@N O M F U N D O you're the one who's lying. Every tribe in SA, except amaZulu, goes to the mountain for initiation and we all sing. The term "igwijo" is a Xhosa term yes, but Africans have been singing such songs from the beginning of time
@N O M F U N D O ,pretty much all African sub Saharan tribes sang amagwijo from antiquity, obviously with each having a different name for them. Also mountain initiation is an African thing, all tribes in SA except maybe Zulu people, do it. In Tswana and Pedi is called Koma.
@N O M F U N D O I will never Spread lies, I happen to be Xhosa. We call them amagwijo, and each tribe has a name for them. In fact igwijo is another song for "ingoma" (a song). We don't only sing when we go to the mountain. We sing on all the events as well. I would humbly request you do a thorough research before you accuse people of lying. Please 🙏🏿🙏🏿🙏🏿
At my highschool in the beginning of the year. Some classes would get cancelled for school spirit songs so we can practice to cheer at sport events and games. And the band would be there too
This High school culture is reflecting the African spirit of singing and rejoicing in life. Also this kind of sing is easy to join in or sing along amagwijo are easy to follow or harmonious along with. They sang siyazalana- which is usually sang at weddings to announce that we are now related, we are connected.
All school's in South Africa have uniforms, you can identify which school a learner goes to based on the uniform. The weather in South Africa is very different, it could be freezing with the sun out. Also keep in mind that it doesn't get as cold here as it does in the US. Umgwijo(Oom-Gwi-Jo) you pronounce the G Traditional South African music is generally very inclusive, as long as you know the harmonies, it doesn't matter whether you can sing or not.
We sing like this when we celebrate events. He is wearing a goat skin on his head its an accessory. All the schools in SA have a uniform. We all wear ties and ironed shirts! SA is lit!
That song you like that was sung a bunch of times, here’s a translation: “We are bretheren, my mother’s offspring (brother). You only arrived yesterday, my mother’s offspring (brother)” All schools in SA wear uniform. All of us.😂 it’s not a turtleneck that’s his scarf. Blazers are mandatory all year at these all boys schools, you adapt😂
Each time i watch videos like this i feel emotional and ask if father cant just take away all bad people and let good people live and lead..... Nkosi sikelela Africa✊🏽
You have to love us as South Africans. For us (Predominantly Black South Africans) we sing when we are happy, sad, moaning as well as when we are angry (You'll always find us picketing /striking).
"From beyond the rivers of Ethiopia (Cush), my suppliants the daughters of my dispersed ones, shall give an offering of praise..." and so we sing Africa sings in oppression we sing in joy we sing, in gratitude we sing, that is us...you gotta understand...
Wow, this is fire!! I'm Nigerian and we have fierce war songs too in Igbo (my language). We just do not sing it in school, only at parties, meetings, demonstrations or movies.
RU-vid has been recommending this channel for so long but I always just skip over the videos. But I'm so glad I finally gave the channel a chance. Love it here
This hymns are not only sang by Xhosas we also do them, mostly especially the football/soccer teams before they went to the game. We do them to uplift our spirits. Check out South African football teams singing, you will see what I'm saying
@N O M F U N D O ,maaka man. It doesn't originate from the Xhosa people. The name Amagwijo yes, but each an every tribe has their name for it. Amagwijo is just like the word Lobola, every tribe in SA do Lobola but every tribe has a name for them, like Magadi etc.
Almost all African school wear uniforms, in kenya the students with different blazers would be school prefects, the ones with the scarves around their necks would be the students leader... The headband symbolizes a crown, he is most likely the chief/leader
The uniforms all both public and private school. The guys wearing the half coloured blazers are the Cheer Leaders,as in the lead the cheer. The scarfs is just part of winter uniform 😅nothing special there.
What I love most abt this is that finally Americans see who we are. Our culture.iur singing. Our dancing. Our homes. The narrative of poor Africans staying in forests is slowly dying. Thanks to people like u.
I’m from Zimbabwe...we also have war cries similar to Amagwijo during sports competition. Some are cultural but some are remixed songs. A school called Milton High have the closest chants and war cries similar to Amagwijo...seen them perform the chants during a cultural/political parade in Bulawayo by the White City Hall 3days before I left for the UK...the energy was electric near scary but in a good way.
Anyone can sing , it’s not about being the lead singer , it’s about joining the spirit. Here in Africa we sing when we happy, sad, angry, mourning or celebrating. It helps with the soul and processing one’s true feelings . One love
Someone in the comments said ‘in Kenya we don’t graduate highschool, we Finish.’ 😂 that’s the case for South Africa. We just finish. We go to ‘matric dance’ (prom) before the years ends and when it ends, it’s basically as normal as any other year. The only graduation we know is grade 0, and Uni 🤞🏾
Bro you making me miss high school!! Going to high school in South africa has its ups and downs but 1 thing we can never deny, when we all started a war cry or just singing in general, it got lit as hell!🤣😂... you should react to south african hymns that shit will hit you in your soul!
Glad you clicked on the link I shared it's Lit(hope you read my explanation of the songs) 🔥 and also seeing your facial expressions and enthusiasm sums how we feel when we sing iGwijo very 🙂.
I went Hoerskool Noorderland. and I graduated in 2017 and i must say high school was the best and greatest moments of growing up in SA. All schools in SA have uniforms and that is one thing that shows unity among learns, you cant get discriminated if we all look the same. And you should bring your child to this beautiful Rainbow Nation... 👌😁
When I was at St. Charles College in PMB many years ago we used to do Warcry practice every week. It takes a lot of practice to get coordinated and to practice your voices to be able to do it louder and longer. The whole school had to go to practice every week. Maritzburg College also had some really good warcries.
Much appreciate your reactions into these cultural activities Bro, as always ya Lit and I must say if you can’t sing you can clap hands, stomp dance or hold your fist up like y’all do when taking a knee. The songs are spirited enough to make everyone do some sort of movement, especially stomping whilst ululations, war cries and shout outs are of ancestral appeal
