We have had some crazy weather this winter, and the ice is insane!! This makes training for Baron a little tricky! Today we are continuing the training for our Suffolk Punch draft horse, Baron. Today you will see some of trials we are facing, and how Baron is responding! We talk about why horses wear shoes, especially in icy situations!
Watch our videos to learn about draft horses- horse logging, horses farming, and horse training! Jim uses Belgian, Percheron, and Suffolk horses to do work on the farm and in the woods. He teaches about harnesses, horse-drawn logging and farming equipment, horse feeding and maintenance, and voice commands for horses. New videos uploaded every week. Keep watching to see how Jim trains his new Suffolk Punch colts as he has trained his full-grown teams!

Baron is really coming along nicely. It is not only a testament to his abilities but also to your calm and steady hands on the reins. It have not trained driving horses but I grew up training riding horses, the main thing you can do for them when things get scary is provide a calm voice and encouragement. You get 2 thumbs up for this performance.

Making a real horse out of Baron, there's nothing quite like real work. Very impressive Jim and Brenda. Scary stuff but Jim knows his stuff. Many times I saw them stepping together, Ken being taller it doesn't last long, but Baron has already figured out that staying in step cuts out all the joggle and pulling is easier. He is a mighty horse!

I’m so glad Barron didn’t fall .. that was scary, I do however liked how you said let’s watch that again and it re- played in slow motion. I noticed when you said G that Ken literally had to push baron over to turn but all in all baron did wonderful, beautiful horses- 💙

Yes, reminds me of when Lance Mackey, 4 time Iditarod Champ ran his dogs through overflow on the icey river. Lance got off and went up and crossed the overflow up to his knees, to encourage the dogs to go!, sometimes you have to lead them. Some simularities in these 2 events.. I'm sure Lance would say there were times he was way over his knees, as he drove 16 Dogs to Nome. WAY to go Baron Buddy!

Your videos are always so entertaining and educational. Baron showed some quickness in keeping his feet under him on that slick spot. I know Ken was somewhat supporting him, but with no shoes, Baron did his part by being agile enough to stay on his feet. Dealing with adverse weather conditions is always a judgment call. A good teamster, a good support horse, and a willing colt greatly improved the odds for success. Wishing you all a blessed and prosperous New Year. God bless!

First of all i would like to wish you Jim and Brenda and the whole family a happy new year full of good health and good cheer and great success in 2023. Barn is coming along nicely i think Ken managed to keep Baron pretty calm considering he had no traction at all, with bare hooves. It always pays for the new horses to have an experienced horse like Ken to bring him on and keep him calm. Hearing your voice telling him Careful also helped him tremendously like the other day when he got a little spooky on the black top when you had him with Ken then the next few times on his own. He is going to make a great team horse and i hope his brothers will learn that too. Baron and Ken deserve a carrot or apple for keeping a cool head in trying circumstances. I hope you guys had a wonderful Christmas. God bless you all

Have you ever seen Shows with short spikes as well as corks and heals, it's my understanding that they were used on Horses and Mules when my Folks were cutting / sawing Ice of Ice Ponds and Lakes around here in Delta County Colorado in the Winter for the many Ice houses. My Folks used Coal Slack and Saw Dust to pack the Ice year-round, worked well. The Spikes helped Horses to be a little more Shure footed on Ice

One year we had moved the cows to their winter pasture , but we never caught the 2 donkeys to move them. So my buddy who owned the farm says Lets go try n get the donkeys into the corral. So using cob corn we could get their attention, but they wouldn't cross the frozen creek. My buddy explained to me that sometimes they won't risk injury by crossing ice. So he asks me Any ideas? Sometimes I think he was testing me. So I suggested that if they can't see the ice they may cross it, Basically lets cover it with hay. So we had to go get some hay and covered the crossing. I found out later that it worked . The funny thing of this is After we got back to his house to warm up and have some coffee his wife asked if we caught them. After telling her No she said. Well, Who's the Jackass's now? Half frozen our faces red from wind burned we just quitly sipped our coffee's

Ice and snow can be treacherous for man or beast. Risk of injury is high. Watching your team struggle on that ice sent shivers up my spine. A very scary moment. I gave up riding my horses in snow for that reason.. for work as you do it is necessary. I understand that. But for elective reasons I stopped. Sad part is I really enjoyed snow riding. Again, I am not criticizing. Just relayin my thoughts why I ceased snow riding. Great job in handling the team when they crossed that ice. 👍.

Speaking of start n stop. When my dad was ten he was given his dad's best team hitched to a milk delivery wagon for his first delivery route that he would do before school twice a week. This would have been in 1932. The horses knew the route, and would stop at every house that bought milk from our dairy operation. Sometimes there would be several houses in between stops. As soon as dad jumped down with his basket of goodies for one house, the horses would roll on to the next house on their route and stop. Where they would wait for dad to catch up and sort the next delivery. If dad was too slow to jump down at a stop, the gray would kick the wagon lightly a time or two to wake him up. Because of course 10 year old boys tend to fall asleep when woken up at 4 am! That team trained him well. Grandpa ran teams even after the war because of the unreliability of autos in cold weather back then. The horses used were a rangy part draft breed, usually Suffolk, (as there were farmers from Great Britain who had settled nearby who had a stallion) part working ranch horse of mixed breeding. Most were 16 hands or better, and could pull up pretty steep hills and break thru drifts with ease. In the winter grandpa would pull the wheels and put the wagons on runners. I love watching the way you work with your horses and having been around some Percherons and Belgians, I have to say I am so impressed with Baron and the Suffolk breed in general.
