WoW! Unexpected GO AROUND - L1011 Tristar BLOWS ME AWAY

Wanne see how it looks like, when you are suddenly in the middle of the wake turbulence of an L1011? I filmed this video at Brize Norton in 2012, when the Royal Air Force still used a few L1011 Tristars. This was probably the most amazing planespotting situation I have ever experienced.
I stood on a small ledder ( 2 steps ) to film over the fence but the Tristar pushed me to the ground and I was kinda surprised by this late go around which caused lots of grass to fly around. Brize Norton is a well known planespotting airport in the UK and it is a homebase for the Royal Air Force tanker fleet.
I already uploaded this video once, 3 years ago when I had lower subscriber range and I deciced to upload it again cause it` s my one of my favorite clips ever - Flashback Friday.
Thank for watching, I hope you liked it and don` t forget to rate. I decided to add a few more Tristar and Douglas Dc-10 clips. I filmed the Netherlands Air Force KDC-10 las monday and I thought it would be a good idea combine these two epic aviation monuments in a single compilation.
Have a great weekend.

L1011 is one of my favorite jets of all time. Back when a company would make the best possible product regardless of the accountants. The DC-10 was rushed to come out first and won the battle but was full of problems that cost lives. The worse product won, but in my mind, the L1011 would always be the winner because it was the superior product and every single person who flew both planes have agreed.

The L-1011 Tristar was one of the most underrated aircraft ever to be put into production. Right off the of my head, I can't recall any Tristar crashes the were not due to Pilot error. Eastern flight 401 was due to Pilot error and Delta flight 191 was due to a windshear microburst. Now the DC-10 was a totally different story, that thing has killed more people than smallpox, most notably the rear cargo door on Turkish Airways flight 581 and the # 2 forward engine fan disk on United flight 232. How Captain Al Haynes and instructor Pilot Captain Denny Fitch even came close to the Sioux City airport, was a miracle in itself. To this day, there's still never been any other Pilot's that have even come close the airport in a simulator. That monstrosity should have been scrapped and turned into soda cans decades ago.
@badass6.0powerstroke10
@badass6.0powerstroke10 2 года назад
Yes, Definitely Agree. The L-1011 TriStar was way Ahead of the DC-10, when it came to technology, and the #2 Engine Placement using the "S Duct" design was way more Attractive Looking than doing what Douglas did and just stuck it in the middle of the Rudder. The Lockheed L-1011 was Far Superior compared to the DC-10. Just listen to all the Pilots that have flown it. I don't recall ever hearing anything negative said about it.

It's not easy to tell but I think perhaps he was coming in too high, his touch down would have been too far forward, so he got his three holes outta of there. I've been on a Delta 727 landing in Phoenix that had to cancel a landing due to a runway excursion, the other case landing at the same airport in a 757, the airport reversed the landing pattern from the usual East to West to west to east, that one was the most exciting, a sudden move from nose down to nose up, flight attendant holding onto seat backs and armrests to avoid being tossed around. We went to 3000 ft immediately then got in the traffic pattern from 6000 ft, headed north, 180 degree turn. I've never had that happen before or since. TWA and Delta had the TriStar, American, United, Continental, Northwest had the DC.-10s, it wasn't all that easy to ride in a TriStar since St Louis and Atlanta were not places I flew to often. Best biggie ever made.

No he flew for Eastern and retired in 1983. Piloted B-17 in WW2. (See Swamp Fire on Facebook. He is on the far right of the top photo.) Signed with Eastern in 1952. Flew DC-7, Electra, DC-8, 727 and L-1011.

MrPLC999 I have a 'ear' for engines, would be able to tell, the difference, of a DC10, from, anL1011, even without seeing them. Live close to KEWR, so depending on winds, many pass over, but you can tell,,by how high, in the early evenings,,ant thing going NORTH, is EUROPE BOUND, if outside, see LH, AF, SWISS, VIRGIN , and few others.

I wish the L1011 would have had the success it deserved. It’s still a marvel and genius feat of innovation and engineering. Though I am fond of the DC-10 & MD-11, the L1011 will always be my favorite. I also wish Lockheed was still in the commercial aviation market, but the bad luck with setbacks on the L1011 engines, etc. pretty well sealed their fate. Beautiful footage of a beautiful plane!

@youtuuba
@youtuuba 6 лет назад
More than half of this video shows the DC-10 (or related) models, so the title is misleading. The easy way to tell the difference is that the DC-10 series has the center engine exhaust in line with the engine intake up on the vertical stabilizer, whereas the L-1011 has the center engine intake up high but the exhaust is at the rear of the fuselage.
@GRAHAMAUS
@GRAHAMAUS 6 лет назад
Plus the engines are much closer in on the DC-10, and overall it's pig-ugly in comparison to the L-1011. Putting them in the same video shows this even more obviously than usual.
