Hey guys, it’s time to look at an awesome new product.
I know we just had a run and review a few days ago with the Class One Model Works flatcars…now we have another one- that’s a great thing with so many new Katy products rolling out. Today we are taking a look at the new WalthersProto SW1200 switcher-which is being offered in several road names…ours of course being Missouri-Kansas-Texas.
A handful of numbers are included in this run…from the details to the paint to the operation-these things are beautiful.
This is the first Walthers locomotive I’ve had in about 15 years…just because they’ve not rolled out with anything I’ve needed. Everything on my engine roster is Athearn Genesis or Atlas…so this was going to be something new…playing catch up with a Walthers product…and I’m really liking what I’ve seen so far.
Honesty hour here…I never once saw an SW1200 working on the Sedalia subdivision- Katy usually kept these switchers around its big terminals- like Parsons, Kansas, and Kansas City, Saint Louis, - and down in Texas. I eventually plan on building the layout out to Saint Louis and/or Parsons, so I’ll have these switchers there- in the future. Until then- they will help kick cars here in Sedalia.
As for those operations…this is a really smooth running unit- especially at super slow speeds which you’ll need while doing switching. My units are the DCC versions…they come equipped with an ESU Loksound 5 decoder.
The LED headlights are nice and bright and the sound is fantastic.
This run represents some of Katy’s six SW1200s numbered one through six delivered during 1957 in red…they would have been repainted green and yellow in the 1970s. The Katy had two more of these 12-hundred horsepower SW1200s delivered in 1962…. For the most part, the units appeared the same externally as the sw9- which Katy had ten of on the roster.
Walther’s promotional material says these engines include newly-tooled details.
One thing that impresses me is this is not one size fits all units. Walthers paid a lot of attention to the little things with road-specific features…and included unique items found on Katy’s units, including:
MKT-style air filter boxes
Spark arrestors on the exhaust stacks
Dual-beam vertical headlight
Other nice details include…
Hood mounted bell
Sunshades and wind deflectors
Proper 600-gallon fuel tank and battery box
Firecracker-style radio antenna
Very nice handrails and grab irons
Finely detailed Footboard, drop steps, and mu hoses
A nice bonus- detailed cab with crew figures- a nice touch
The paint and lettering on these are very nice and crisp. As I mentioned in previous videos, we Katy modelers have had issues in the past with some manufacturers having shades of green that are off…but to my eye, this looks pretty good.
One thing that always stood out to me as cool about all of Katy’s switchers is the solid yellow upper portion on the cab and cab roof…the road units had the stripes going all the way up to the roofline and solid green roofs, or in the early green years, the yellow stripes continued up and across the roof. I always thought the extra yellow was a neat variation and gave the units a pretty bright appearance.
Whether painted up for Katy or whatever your favorite road is, I bet you’ll enjoy these WalthersProto SW1200s. They'll look right at home working your yards, industry tracks, or branch lines.
I just got back from the National Model Railroad Association National train show in Grapevine, Texas- I’ll have the highlights of that fantastic event in the next episode. Until then, all aboard, and all the best!

Todays question: What has your experience been with locomotives and other rolling stock from Walthers?
@randallellison6421
@randallellison6421 11 месяцев назад
I love Walthers rolling stock, especially their intermodal cars! Their well cars are made of metal which lets them track very well and they're tough as nails! Their TOFC cars and autoracks are right up there with them. I like their locomotives too, but tend to prefer the Mainline and Trainline offerings over the Proto series, cost and durability being the main factors.

Hello! I sure appreciate that. Yes, the folks at Walthers did an excellent job on these units! Their building kits already populate my layout…might as well have some of their engines as well. Ha! -Mike

Thats a really nice MKT sw1200 the fine details an road specific .. wow , as a child I would see a pair of these sometimes with a Calf , switching a branch line where I lived here in Canada . Near every night you could hear that sweet rumble , out the door on my bike to chase the train as it switched the many local industries. Still one of my favorite locomotives.. Cheers , thank you for sharing...

Hi, there! Thanks so much! I’m really enjoying these units so far. Those are some great memories! I also miss seeing these old switchers around. The BN also had quite a few of different makes and models, and I always enjoyed seeing them kick cars around the yards (the BN is my “other” favorite green railroad- ha). -Mike

I have a small number of weathers locomotives in the BN. They do run well and I never have issues with them. There passenger cars are great. I do like the older proto locomotives to detail up and to weather. They can be cheap, run great after an overhaul adding DCC sound, add the detail and finish with the wreathing. They make for great fantasies industrial switchers or you can get very realistic with the prototype also. Highly recommend giving it a try!

Hello! Yes, I’ve been very pleased so far. I had some Walthers units a few years back, but they were pretty basic on the detail. They’ve come a long way since then! I’ve also had some of their Proto line cars and have enjoyed those as well. -Mike

Thank you! They’re great little engines. While they Katy didn’t use many of these on the subdivision I’m modeling, they remind me of all the ones BN had at the yard in Springfield, Missouri- my “other” hometown. That’s part of the fun of having a layout…doing it your own way sometimes! Ha. -Mike

@MesquiteBelt 10 месяцев назад
@@MainTrack YES, Walthers is now aware there is an issue. Multiple people have had issues when programming the decoder or even just running the engine. Walthers is working on what the solution is when your unit has issues…. Stay tuned for more details as this story develops…

I find Walthers rolling stock to be nicely detailed and accurate. I run Atlas and Athearn locos, so I can't review those. I only saw a switch engine on the Sedalia sub once. It was at the end of the typical loco consist, I figure it was a power transfer to St. Louis. Neat to see, but there was no camera on me at the time...rats.

@MainTrack 10 месяцев назад
Hi, Byron. I know the feeling about missing out due to no camera! I saw some footage once of one of the re-engined Baldwin switchers on Train 102…probably like the one you saw headed to Baden. These Walthers engines are nice and I couldn’t resist the temptation. They’ll definitely have a good spot once I build the layout as far as Saint Louis and/or Parsons. Their stay in Sedalia will just be considered a temporary break in period until then! Ha. -Mike

Nice review. Do these have some kind of keep alive circuit / do they have any issues with dropping out over dead frogs or dirty patches of track? The only problem I see for me is no BN paint schemes, maybe next run.
@MainTrack
@MainTrack 11 месяцев назад
Hi, Bruce! Thank you! I don’t have Keep Alive installed on these. Admittedly, I have had a few spots on turnouts where it has been sensitive and dropped out on me. I found it was just some spots down in there that were a little dirty. A good cleaning with my track solution cured that, thankfully. But, I’m sure it’ll be something I’ll have to keep up on. I’m with you in the BN units…I might have to snag a couple if they offer those! -Mike
