Hey, it's not just because someone took away our toy, they also gave us a speeding ticket! For simply going ftl in an ftl ship. Honestly, what were they expecting us to do with an ftl ship? They're using ftl tech and probably something bigger too if they can stop and confiscate an ftl ship, so they're breaking their own laws while saying we can't. The bastards!

I think you missed the point, it was a comparison where the humans made their own cops to police themselves with their own laws meanwhile the universal police had never had anything to do with humans, no treaty, no contract, no relations, no representation. its as if walking around at night on the sidewalk in America, but a Chinese(nationality, not race) police officer came by and arrested you because of a curfew law in China

@@0range_panda982 No one chooses the polity into which they are born. This scenarios is more like that. Earth has been in "Cop Space" for its entire recorded history. No one knew, because aren't responding to things that don't break the laws. Earth never went outside it's system any appreciable degree. Imagine a child, running around, acting like a child inside their home. No one cares. Same child runs outside, naked, and starts playing in traffic. Cops show up. The people who should be in charge get a fine. The child didn't make a choice to be part of their jurisdiction, and the parents probably didn't either. This is the story of a bunch of brats who ran into traffic naked and responded to there being a larger community outside their own by setting fire to the local law and letting all the lifers out of max security. Nothing about "Why is that the law?" Nothing about "How are the laws made?" Nothing about "Hey, we really want to go fast and you seem to have a way that isn't illegal. Maybe we can work something out?"

@@0range_panda982 No, it lacked a well fleshed out reason. To me it came across as an ACAB narrative, and a poor one at that. Honestly, it would have been better with your narrative, they get a ticket and told to pay. Reason is they exceeded the limit in an area because of some XYZ. Here is where you develop the point which this story sorely lacked.

Fiction, particularly science fiction, is an escape from the tedium and insanity we live in for most who consume it. Take another work on this page... The Black Ship... it has strong females, a positive portrayal of a Monarchy, and I couldn't tell you a thing about the author's politics. Could be male or female, could be a commonwealth author or not... I don't know, and I don't care. I like the story and I can't predict what the author might say next. If you ever read some of the 1960s books that drag in Malthusian insanity, or other dated, failed, political "hot topics," you get an involuntary eye roll. Same for the 1980s "Ozone Layer" hysteria. That is the moment you know, you're not reading a story, you're sitting for a sermon. In every sermon, you know with boring certainty exactly what will be coming from the "righteous pulpit." I'm a Xennial... there are few points raised by anyone I agree with... beyond the fact that Alice in Chains was better than Nirvana, and I'm tired of people pretending otherwise. Cheers

Lol at the people getting mad at the "political filler". That's not political, that's science. Elon Musk has said UBI will be needed once Optimus gets to a certain point. Do you really *want* to have to work your entire life? You realize we've effectively been made into slaves because our economy needs people for labor, right? it literally is political, and not science. theres no science with conclusive results that says x or y economical system / policy is "better, as these are really really hard things to quantify and test. you then mention elon's opinion, literally after appealing to science, which is ridiculous. additionally, we havent been made into slaves because our economy "needs it". we have been made into slaves so that people like well, elon can make more money in a single bathroom break than our families make in their entire life time. oh and i think its worth mentioning im actually a leftie which very much agrees with ubi. yet not at all for the reasons you provide
