amazing running like 1.02 each lap. I consider myself in good shape, im allways the fastest in the bike line/sidewalk every day to work and have no problem running 10km in 45 min. Still i cant do better than 1.10min on 400 min.
Got sucked into the youtube wormhole last night and watched this. I was pretty proud of getting my 5K PR down and I was curious what the world record was. This is insane.
Bekele is the perfect runner. He is the only distance runner in history to have the full package of. Endurance, speed, speed endurance, efficiency, form, up and downhill running in cross country etc. He's got it all. He was so perfectly armed with every skill that commentators would openly admit that there was just no strategy to beat him. If Bekele was in a race, you'd just have to forget about gold.
***** Bekele was primarily a 10,000 m runner so my statement is particularly referring to 10,000 m races with Bekele. On your point about the 2004 olympics, the fact that it took the greatest middle distance runner ever (arguably) to beat Bekele over a sprint finish just emphasizes my point. Bekele had the potential to burn out El G with relentless 62 second laps but he just did not gauge his tactics well enough. It was not a matter of him being incapable of beating El G.
+Aaron tewelde Clearly, he's a great runner, but specifically WHICH commentators "would openly admit that there was just no strategy to beat him"? Never heard anyone say that. Also proved untrue by Kipchoge in 2003, who had the perfect strategy to beat him. Also, how is he "the only runner in history" to have endurance, etc. etc?
Gary Williams I have watched so many of Bekele's races it would be so hard for me to remember which race the commentators admitted that there was no strategy to beat Bekele. 2003 is only the year Bekele started rising to prominence so you could account for the fact that he lacked tactical experience then. However, that was the first and last time Kipchoge ever beat Bekele. Kipchoge raced Bekele for the rest of his track career and retired without ever beating him. I could easily prove that Bekele is the greatest in regards to all the tools that a distance runner needs. Can you think of any other distance runner who had Bekele's package? Even the great Haile lacked a little bit of Bekele's speed. Not only that but he also broke Haile's world records with impressive margins. Where Haile failed to succeed in cross country, Bekele became the greatest cross country runner ever seen with an unprecedented 11 titles. Tergat comes in second place with only 5 titles just to give you a perspective of Bekele's greatness.
***** Haile Gebrselassie never had Bekele's ability to switch gears. That is why Gebrselassie never succeeded in cross country while Bekele absolutely dominated it. Bekele's speed was also better than Haile's.
+Aaron tewelde Hey dude, I see you on a lot of running vids and you seem to know what your talking about. Do you think that Bekele was born with this talent or is it just plain hard work? Because there are many athletes that I think train just as hard as Bekele but not nearly as good..
this is RIDICULOUS. How does he keep pumping out 60 second laps over and over and over again? I would barely be able to with him for 1.5 laps. Fucking pinnacle of human physical achievement.
Cheptegei may have broken his record but Bekele did it almost 20 years ago, and he had a monstrous finish, I wouldn't be surprised if he became the first in the world to go down 2h01' in the marathon.
Cheptegei broke the record in more advanced shoes and with blue light pacers. Bekele dropped the pacer, and then ran mostly on his own with nothing but the clock at the end of each lap to go off. Way different... Plus, I think if it was down to an in person battle between Cheptegei and prime bekele, bekele wins every time
@@greggarey4068 Cheptegei had a huge advantage with those wave lights. Kipchoges 1:59:40 marathon isn't offcial so why is Cheptegei 5k and 10k official???
For those commenting on him running after the race: do keep in mind this is an athlete that can run 4:04 pace for 3.1 miles, and 4:13 pace for 6.2. When you are that fit, running around at an 8 minute pace might as well be walking. It's nothing. Guys like Bekele can go for an easy "jog" at 5:45 type pace. Haile has said that he could never run slower than 6:30 miles because it felt "too slow/awkward"
Less than a century ago many said that no human would ever break the 4 minute mile. Bekele here is running 4:02 splits in the freaking 5k. Crazy to think that humans are on the verge of being able to break the four minute mile back to back to back.
cDynasty001 Ahahahahahahaha, wow. Thats really funny. I just cried from laughing 2 minutes straight... I'm Ethiopian (and yes I run too) and I can guarentee you that that has very little influence looool. It's genetics and epigenetics; in other words, nature and nurture that puts us at an advantage over everyone else; for example, we are able to function with less oxygen input to the heart than anyone else because many parts of Ethiopia have very thin air.
What's astonishing and breathtaking is that almost all the people present there were certain that they're gonna witness a WR that day. That's how good Bekele was. Now that when he's transitioned to the marathon and produced a legendary time at the 2019 Berlin marathon we're in for a show at the Tokyo Olympics. Bekele and Kipchoge...Here we go 💪💪😊😊 Long live the King 👑🙏 Both legends no doubt 😊😊
+Hun Cluno Since when is "being gay" a bad thing? Maybe you should choose another term. And yes, the joke went straight over your head. It's the feeling of watching someone absolutely destroy the sport/hobby you're apart of, and just shaking your head like "wow, I suck. that's just god-like status." A 6 minute mile is actually a feat for some - so trying to comprehending running 3.1 miles at 4:02 per mile is just... tear-inducing. 😂
What I like most is he did it mostly by himself. Even without the pacer the first mile, I think the result would have been the same. A truly magnificent display of what the human body can do.
Indeed, you are so right about that. Very very difficult to run by yourself but, do it and break the world record? Wow! Congrats sir Kenenisa B in 2015. Only a competitive runner could fully comprehend how HARD it is to run by yourself regardless of your shape.
what a talent he was i cant believe i didn't watch him enough when he was at his best it would be honour to watch him race on a regular basis athlete like him come once in a life time
***** I was just kidding, people make jokes about that all the time, I'm sorry you couldn't hear how sarcastic that was, don't get so offended, it is a great piece of distance running.
Without doubt the finest middle/long distance athlete ever. Has the edge on Haile.(JUST) His world records are phenomenal. 5k 12.37. 10k 26.17. Mo. best 5k 12.53. 10k. 26.46. Mo has proved he is a great competitor but never competed against the best of the best at their best. Bekele, Haile and Komen were in a class of their own. Not taking anything away from Mo, he can/could only race against the people around at the time. I think an older but still hopefully fit Bekele could possibly still get the marathon record in the next couple of years. Maybe London 17??? I must add that El Guerrouj is probably the finest Short/ middle distance runner ever alongsie Seb Coe.?
Rob 1n Yh the thing is Mo often raced tactically to slow it down as he knew he could win if it ended as a sprint, so we will never know how he would have matched up
To me, this is the most impressive Performance ever on the track. Bolt’s 9.69 in 2008 was jaw dropping, but this is far more impressive in my opinion. What effort! What beauty!
Amazing and inspiring, pure running genius from Kenenisa. Great to see the crowd so involved, cheering for him, the rock star of distance running! Apparently Kenenisa runs with a 6'5 leg stride on his 5'6 frame, a distance runner who can also turn into a mini Usain Bolt at will, the complete running package and deserved WR holder for the 5,000m, genius!
I recently tested out my 5k time and got close to breaking sub 19... it felt like hell and I felt pretty fast. It really helps put this legend Bekele and how fast he's going into perspective. This man is hands down overall the greatest running in human history thus far.
You are indeed a good runner when you can run the 400m in about 60 seconds. Once. Bekele runs the 400m 12 times in about 60 seconds which means a average of 2:31 m/km. I would really like to know about his VO2max and a biomechanical analysis of is running. He runs so efficient. He is the best!
Biomechanic is not that much of deal. Some great runners like Haile Gebrselassie had really poor running form. You need the genetics (a good VO2max) and a good training.
@@samuelgauthier7355 Geb's running form was excellent. I think you are talking about the fact that one of his arms would swing more than the other, but 1. That had little influence, and 2. the biomechanics of his legs were near perfect. Form is still very important
@@waterproof4403 Yeah its kinda weird how the IAAF approved the "lights" to be a legal way to pace. But I had read another comment and that changed my perspective a bit. Imagine you were behind the pace lights. That ruins your stride and mentally messes you up. There are equal arguments on both sides of the equation, however I feel the IAAF made this change for the technological advancements of the sport. Its a hard pill to swallow rn, but its for the future!
@@narenn91 thats the whole point my friend. Whether the lights are in front or behind you, it tells you to not go over or under pace! Keep in mind no one even cheptegei ever came close to the records until the lights showed up. There was no one that came to even 12:40. That shows you how much advantage they have. Also the womens 10,000m and 5000m as well. Records achieved with those lights should be held 'separately' just like kipchoges marathon. Also why don't you see lights at world championships or olympics?
I thought that improving my 36mins in November to 21mins in February (3 months) is fulfilling, until I watched this video .. his endurance is admirable! wow
13:30 at that point in the race I'm sure he was very tired, but he would've also had an insane runners high. I'm sure sprinting at the end there felt awesome for him, especially when he got to pass that guy on the last turn.
12.37.35 is crazy, I knew the time was going to be good when the length of this entire video was better then my personal best haha. I was watching a video on Daniel Komen just before and he was running a 2.26minute kilometre when he broke the mens 3000m outdoor record. If Daniel Komen were to repeat that exact pace for a 5000m race, he'd of finished the 5K in 11.18.00. Running a 5K in 11 minutes and 18 seconds would've been insane, I'm surprised Komen didn't even get himself a world record in general for the mens 5000m
@@random-zb7fp Yeah most likely, if he just had a better day. Crazy how double that time is 25min 5K which is considered being in shape for an average runner. I probably couldnt bike 5k in 12.30 if I was out of energy. I just saw 12.35 is the newest WR, only 2 seconds shed off after 18 years
@@ADOSMOORINOS 25 min for a 5k is a good time for an average runner or generally a healthy/fit person. 12:37 is superhuman. Also the new world record doesn't hold that much significance like this one. It was assisted with certain things. Like wavelight pacing which is 100% accurate and a bouncy track/shoes. 12:35 is insane but for me Bekeles 12:37 is much more impressive. The pacers went out too slow and he ran a few extra meters on the outer lanes. No doubt he could have ran much faster that day haha. Crazy indeed
@@random-zb7fp Decent so I'm generally fit rn, back in highschool my all time record I believe was 18:39 but only during a brief moment where I was addicted and ran twice a day. I knew it was my limit because I know I need a different body type to go faster. I see, I feel like maybe every track event is becoming more assisted, so perhaps the oldest records or the records that are still holding up are the true best records. For the sake of a 12:30 5k, I think the world record will top out evnetually at 12:29, seems like a limit for now
Incline training will turn you into a machine. I ran on a 15-17% incline @ 4mph for about 2 months on a treadmill, 2-3 times a week for an hour straight each session, and my 5k time went from around 26:00 to 16:12. I'm 30, and used to weigh about 350 lbs(now ~175). It completely blew my mind that I was able to do a sub-20 after that. I feel like I can still make a lot of headway on my time - my heart just hasn't adjusted to that level of speed, yet.
man I think that is an insane improvement. I have a few questions for you though. 1. Did you run that 26min 5k when you were 350lbs? 2. Did you improve from 26min to 16min in a matter of two months? Because that is insane. 3. The only training you did was run on a treadmill at a steep incline 2-3 times a week?
I feel like every year goes by, that one day someone is going to break this record. The sad part is I know that Bekele could have proved the record at least by 2-3 seconds. Considering that he was still fresh 22 years old back then and he didn’t have so much experience on track, but we never know. Beside this his 10k Record is just perfect.
You can tell from watching his facial expressions in the middle of the race that he truly wanted that record. The smiles and smirks he has on his face show me that he was imagining in his mind the end result so he could get through the pain to be there. Look what happened, he got his end result.
Vinícius Guimarães I'm happy with my 19:27, but that doesn't mean I don't want to be better. I started at 23:00. Hopefully by my senior year on highschool I'll have low 18's
Espectacular. En español se suele decir "sin palabras" para referirse a un acontecimiento asombroso y positivo y que se repite cada 100 años.... o más.
My best was 15'41'' when I was 25 years old. I worked 8 hours per day as a normal worker and I ran a 5000 meters in an evening meeting in Milan after working.I can think I could do better wthout working with a good trainer and more training,in this condition I could run in less than 15 minutes….to run the distance in less than 13 minutes in so far...Beyond any imagination…!
Does anybody else find it really strange to see people randomly walking around and hanging out on the track while a super important race is taking place?
I know right. The guy is literally flying around the track just barely below 15mph, comparable to biking, and half the people there have no idea what they're witnessing.
Much respect to the record holder. However, the sky is the limit for the king of 5km and 10km back to back. If things keep on going the way it has been going for him, anything is possible. I'd like to remind you that you have no net over him to hold him down. Do you? No, you don't. I know so. Go Mohamed Farah go!
+Tummun Hehe. Funny. What I understood is you just called Farah the king of the 5k and the 10k. Did you know Bekele holds both records? Farah is the king of RACING, or winning races. That is the only way he runs. When he gets even close to the WR, you can come b back and say I told you so.
+Thisis Bob no chance in hell he will! Don't believe it. Not that i am bad mouthing Mo Farrah, excellent athlete but his objectives are specifically winning the big races and not going out to set records. Kennenisa Bekele was something extremely special. One of a kind. It is unfair imho to compare other athletes to him.
Miren el WR de Gebre de 12.39 y este 12.37 de Bekele, se quedan solos la mitad de carrera o más, es brutal el ritmo 60-61 seg por cada 400 y aun así creo bajan los 2 de 5.00 el último 2k, increíble.
D-grade recording crew: photographer gnats swarm instantly, too many head & torso shots, useless dot-on-screen zoom outs, no emphasis on leg turnover. But the champion's work is an inspiration.
kemenisa bekele quel champion sa générosité avec le public c est le Bruce Lee du 5000 et du 10 000 tout est parfait quelqu un de très gentil il inspire le respect
sad to tell you i stopped doing running sessions for the last 2 months i love running tho but i always dont find enough time i will be back for running from tomorrow
Running at a slower pace than you're capable of actually can be really frustrating. I'm a useless fat rookie runner who can only do a 10 minute mile, but even an 11:30 minute mile drove me insane. Even at those low speeds I got impatient and it really did feel "too slow and awkward" so I know exactly what Haile is getting at. These guys "light warmup jog" makes my sprinting look like I'm glued to the spot.
