This video will show you how to replace the ABS Module (controller) on any Wrangler JK 2007-2011. The part number for the ABS controller is different for almost every model year, so make sure you order the correct one!
Spoiler Alert! You CAN reprogram the ABS module without going to the dealer to add the VIN. I was able to use JScan to do this. Instructions are near the end of the video.

Awesome video. Thanks! Have a 2013 JK Sahara. Took about 6 months to receive a replacement ABS module pn 6814 5835 AE . Took about 30 min to replace the module - was in no hurry -watching this video. Once replaced, my ABS flashed and chime sounded for about 5 miles then chime stopped and ABS light stayed on solid. Was left with solid ABS light and solid stability crtl light. Seemed to drive and brake fine. Took it to the dealer for a flash and all lights are now off! Dealer charger $78 for flash.

I hope you read this bc your video was so useful. I just change my module on a 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee. I could not get a brand new module and I paid $215 for second hand. I got a Bluetooth OBII scanner for my phone and I could initialize new module with Jscanner. You save me at least a $1000 between parts and labor. So thank you and keep doing this videos.

Thanks for the great video Austin. I just replaced the ABS module on my wife's 2009 Jeep Wrangler with a OEM part number confirmed to be the correct one for her jeep. I followed the instructions on the JSCAN app and your video. All the lights went out except the ABS light and chime flashes and chimes every 2 to 3 seconds. If you have any idea or suggestions what to do to help I would appreciate it. Thanks Glenn

mid-2024 up here in Chinadastan,....$1219 and oh btw,.....4-6 months backorder! Take it up the tail pipe from Chrysler! Cheaper to go for a vacay in Mexico and bring one back! If Chrysler wanted to get all the Illegals to each bring one up,....there wouldn't be a supply issue!

Great video and easy to follow. I have the same problem, and as mentioned it's almost impossible to find this module. Apparently it's both discontinued and "Due to manufacturer supply shortage, this item isn’t currently available for ordering." Being in a relatively small market (Australia) doesn't help either. The only available option is to do what you exactly foreshadowed as not needed: 1. Replacing the whole system not only the controller. Apparently, the dealership have that available but not just the controller. 2. As it's replacing the whole system now. My mechanic wants to do all the bleeding process. Extremely costly. The other option is to purchase the controller unit online from overseas (not from mopar) which appears to be available, however this comes with considerable level of risk. This is scheduled for next week. I'll update my comment or reply to it. Maybe it helps someone who's facing a similar situation. P. S. After the installation I'll try the initialisation myself.

@@austin.gresham - It didn't take long for an update. My mechanic called the Jeep dealership just moments before we placed the order to double check that the controller module is included in the quoted part, the salesperson confirmed, we asked for the part # and searched online, it was clearly mentioned that this is just the pump and pipes, and does not include the module. We called again, sales transferred us to a technical person who confirmed the module is indeed not included and they don't have it in the country (Australia). Now back to square 0. fishing for the module online.

Thanks for the very informative video Austin. Because of your video I was able to replace the ABS controller on my wife's 2009 Jeep Wrangler with a new OEM part confirmed to match her jeep. I followed the JSCAN app directions and all the lights are off except the ABS lite is flashing and chimes. I tried several times and cannot get the light to stop flashing and chime stop chiming. All wheel sensors are working fine and JSCAN shows no codes. If you have any idea of what I might be doing wrong or what else I can do to get them to stop I would appreciate. Thanks again

Hi Glenn. In my experience, when the ABS light is flashing (and no other lights) it's usually because the steering angle is out of alignment. Make sure you do a proper centering of the steering wheel using the draglink, while using JScan to check what it reports as the steering angle sensor degrees. I can't remember how many degrees "off" will trigger the ABS error, but essentially you want it as close to 0 as possible.

Another good video. I recently had the same trouble lights, random, and now constant. I have Jscan and at first had several codes, but now just C2200. Can you explain more how you verify torque request in Jscan if you know? I am trying to make sure it is the module and not the pcm or connection or something else. - I think I figured it out, I verified ESP torque request SET with engine running, I think this is what I needed to check. Also, when you got the new module did you just do the ABS initialization steps? Is that the same as programming to your VIN? I see another option for ABS clear VIN, did you have to do that before the initialization? I am hoping to find a new module.
@ht9565
@ht9565 Год назад
Well my new ABS module worked, it was almost impossible to remove from the grommets, and the bottom screws on the module were even more challenging. You need a very narrow T20 extension. Jscan abs initialization worked without having to do any other programming.

I have a 2015 JK Wrangler unlimited.Recently replaced front rotors & pads. Went on easily but after new parts and it doesnt happen all the time , when i hit the brakes it feels like the abs is engaging .I am getting no abs lights or any other lights coming on . When I was doing the install and compressing the caliper pistons I didnt open the bleeder valve or open the master cylinder cover when compressing the caliper piston to fit over the pads and rotor. Not sure if I did any damage to the abs system .The brakes feel good , just abs engages sometimes. I have a OBD2 reader that diagnoses abs codes but it shows no codes or errors .Has no live abs data capabilities in this scanner . Could my abs module be defective if im not getting any cides or abs lights coming on .Any suggestions on what could be causing this . Thank you
@austin.gresham
@austin.gresham 8 месяцев назад
That's an interesting one. First, I would not worry that you did any damage by not opening the fluid reservoir when compressing the pads. I've done that a number of times and never damaged anything - removing the cap just makes the compression a little easier in my experience. If you think ABS is engaging, but you're not seeing any lights illuminate, then I don't think it's an ABS problem. If the ABS module was bad, you'd be seeing at least some code that tells you there's an error. I have not seen one just "stop" recognizing errors and give up. So, I guess that's the good news. Have you checked the rear pads? With the ABS, BLD rear diff, and traction control the rear brakes on these get worked a lot harder than older Jeeps. You may have an issue in the rear, including a bad E-brake shoe. I am about to post a video about these, actually, which caused pretty bad noise in a 2008 Wrangler. Other than that, you may have a driveline issue/noise, like shavings in the differential. Hope that helps!

You aren’t kidding about the modules being hard to find! I’m actually waiting on a used one now. Hopefully it will be here by the end of the week and I can get my Jeep fixed. If you don’t mind me asking, what scan tool are you using? Mine is very basic and won’t do nearly all yours did. Would love to upgrade. Thanks for sharing!
@austin.gresham
@austin.gresham Год назад
Good Luck! For the scan tool I use a few different ones: an Innova (from harbor freight), JScan and AlfaOBD. For this particular fix, JScan was what I ended up using to get through the initialization for the new ABS module. It's an app for iPhone/Android that uses a bluetooth or wifi OBDII adapter like an ELM32 that you can find on Amazon.

@@brianhayes7153 That's great to hear! No idea how you got away without reprogramming but congrats. Did you tell the seller what your VIN number was ahead of time? Some people (dealers) can program a VIN prior to shipping it out... just curious.

@@austin.gresham No, didn’t give the seller my VIN. It came from a junk yard in Iowa. Dodge dealer in Grapevine, TX said they had over 800 on back order nationwide at dealers. All I could find were used ones. Don’t know why it didn’t need flashing, but I don’t have any warning lights at all now. I’ll take it!

Hi... I'm using the icar adapter with the jscan. I installed a used module and was trying to program but keep getting a "sub function not supported" & "conditions not correct". Maybe you know about it or what's up. Thanks...
@austin.gresham
@austin.gresham Год назад
hmm... I don't know much about the icar adapter. Some functions require an OBD with more advanced protocol handling and I'mnot a CANBus expert to be able to tell you if the ABS module needs that. You could try a different adapter like the MX+ (which is what I used in this video). The other possibility is that you need to clear the VIN from the used module first using the "Clear VIN Original and Current" before the Initialization. If neither of those work, you may have another bad module, unfortunately.

Yes, for JSCAN. If you use AlphaOBD you don't need a separate license for each VIN, but you do pay for it once.

Hi Austin, I recently have had my abs module replaced by a shop. After I picked the jeep up about 5 minutes down the road the abs and stability control light came on. It came up on the jscan app as a rear left wheel speed sensor. I not long ago replaced the sensor. A few days later i noticed that the problem has been coming and going. Would you suggest I complete the programming part again to see if that changes anything?
@nstep16

If I have solid abs light and traction light on, do you think the initialisation was not done properly? Your input would be greatly appreciated 😊
@austin.gresham
@austin.gresham 10 месяцев назад
You may have a faulty sensor, the wiring could bad, or you could have build up on the sensor from brake dust. The rear wheel hubs have the tone wheel and sensor pretty exposed as compared to the front and sometimes they get caked up with metal shavings. What is the actual code? I can also give you some electrical tests to try.
@austin.gresham
@austin.gresham 10 месяцев назад
Could be the initialization, but it's more than likely being caused by the wheel speed sensor you mentioned. Another thing that can cause it is the steering wheel being out of alignment and the SAS sending bad information to the ABS controller.

Process would be the same. My only hesitation would be that these things all seem to fail at some point. A used one might be close to failing depending on how many miles were already on it. If the price is worth it, give it a shot!
