Who says Stealth Aircraft didn't exist until the 1980's?? This aircraft right here is the Grandfather of the F117 Nighthawk Strike aircraft, the B2 Spirit bomber, and the B21 Raider.

Lord Beaverbrook wasn't a politician, he was a Newspaper magnate. He and Churchill got on along very well. Beaverbrook's job was to ensure that the RAF had the planes and engines to defend the UK. The period in which this took place was during and after the Battle of Britain. England needed every aircraft and engine it could get its hands on. The UK government had placed an order worth $130 million with Packard to build Merlin engines. The first one ran in August 1941. Engines were precious and there were many other new aircrafts being developed which could have done with the Merlin.

Comic nerd factoid: The reason Cyclops of the X-Men ended up separated from his parents and brother was because an alien race (the Shiar) attacked the airplane his father was flying. That plane: a Mosquito.

Sorry for this very late comment, but had to chime in about "The World At War". Quite simply the best documentary series ever. Made barely 30 years after WWII ended, each episode contains eyewitness interviews from every significant event in the war (For example, you even have Hitler's private secretary from the final days of hiding in the bunker in Berlin, describing how the sonofabitch married Eva Braun and practised murdering his dogs.) If you post it, we will come!

There was also a version of the mosquito called the tsetse fly, this had the 4 machine guns, 4 20mm canons and a 56mm 6 pounder anti tank gun with an auto loader, they were used to hunt ships and submarines, when they were also carrying 8 rockets they were supposed to be able to match the fire power of a light cruiser.

Re: concrete boats. The concrete engineering classes at The University of Kansas and at Kansas State University have had an annual "Concrete Canoe Race" for decades. They race downstream from Manhattan, Kansas (home of K-State) to Lawrence, Kansas (home of KU) along the Kaw River. The winner is not the one that makes it, it is the lightest one that makes it first. A fun day.

Known as 'Liberty ' ships, consructed with precast sections of concrete. 1000s delivered 1942 onwards.

The Hawker Hurricane was a stressed fabric covering a wooden frame, it was the most numerous RAF fighter during the Battle of Britain, the ground crews liked it because repairing the bullet holes was like repairing holes in your clothes, not so with metal skin Spitfires.

Definitely NOT a fake plane! My uncle worked with the Mosquitos, and one day, a pilot didn't see him. He was very lucky - he only lost half an eyebrow to that propeller! Amazing plane! And its that kind of Blue Sky thinking that meant this little island always managed to punch above its weight. By the way, that guy could do your 1 hour Ted talk in 25 minutes! 😂

Operation Jericho took place on 18 February 1944 during the Second World War. the mosquito bombed Amiens Prison in France not Norway and it was a success freeing lots of French freedom fighters.
@HankD13
@HankD13 58 минут назад
Operation Jericho was the Amiens prison break (blowing down the walls) - not Norway. Their first combat op was as Pathfinders in the 1000 bomber raid of Cologne in May 42. The Mosquito movie "633 Squadron" is an abiding childhood memory. The mosquito was also a very beautiful plane - and it was also incredibly adaptable - photo recce, bomber - including the Highball bouncing bomb, night fighter, fighter bomber - bombs or rockets, torpedo bomber and personal favourite the Teste Mosquito with its Molins "6-pounder Class M" cannon: this was a modified QF 6-pounder (57 mm) anti-tank gun! U-boats really hated that one.

The liberty ships were a crash built class of cargo ships and in typical US "go big or go home" style of WW2 they built close to 3000 of the things and the truly amazing part, they did that in the span of 4yrs...while also churning out enough Warships to overtake the Royal Navy as the largest navy on the planet by quite some margin! Highly recommend Historigraph - How the liberty ship won ww2 for the allies @WreckedNation01 There were concrete cargo ships built by Liberty Ship Building Company during WW1 as part of the "emergency fleet". Iirc there were around 10 and it was towards the end of the war too. They didn't really do much beyond provide lessons on the idea. Not sure the idea was resurrected for WW2 though. By that time, while still a valuable war material, steel was far more abundant than it was back in WW1. WW2 there was also the pykrete super carriers that never really left the drawing board beyond a proof of concept small hull that was constructed somewhere in Canada(and apparently took years to defrost and fall apart) and it did also result in a hilarious sounding meeting between high ranking Royal Navy officers and USN counter parts with someone ending up nearly getting hit in the leg when someone shot a block of pykrete to prove it was strong stuff 😂 Cuts down on the back n forth if you just pull a gun out and shoot the thing to say "see? It strong" I suppose. That was project Habbakuk I think? It's another bats**t crazy "what were you smoking when you thought that up and can I have a pint of it plz?" idea 😊
@rg20322
@rg20322 15 дней назад
Actually, that's incorrect. The US was trying to see if ice, along with straw and other materials could become an aircraft carrier. I believe that the British were looking at actual concrete ships. Please keep in mind that the term "Concrete" is very different when manipulated. You can have a concrete boat and love that they were thinking about it. Love the Romans!

Oh yes another good one, have always loved the Mosquito. What a story , the video fills in some gaps in my knowledge. Very nice. 🤘❤️🇺🇲🇪🇺 Ps , yes concrete ships, they are now used as Powell River Concrete Ship Breakwater aka the Hulks, in BC canada. Wasnt a new concept either. It kinda works. During both World Wars, the U.S. government ordered small batches of ships with hulls made of concrete. The ships were built due to wartime shortages of steel. While the ships were not complete failures, the entire concept was less than ideal ( imagine patching a hole, way harder than wood or metal ships, almost impossible ) and the practice was abandoned. There are several videos about them. That "world at war" boxset is a good one, i have it as well. Been ages since i've touched it tho coz it envolves reinstalling a dvd player or watching it on laptop😂. If you manage to get it uploaded it is definitely worth the watch. I am here for it 😉

Amazing that Highschool History Class never mentioned the "stupid politics" part.🤔🤔🤔 I saw a Mosquito once as a kid at an airshow. Very cool. Love this Fat Electrition guy. Very funny.🤘🔥🤘 I always thought I had a good grasp of WW2 history but only last week learned about a "friendly fire" battle between the Canadians and the USA off the coast of Alaska. I had never heard anything about this but can understand that both countries would keep this embarassment under wraps.😅😂😂😂😪 Another great reaction and video.❤️‍🔥👍 🥰🥰🥰🇨🇦

Lots of yachts were made from concrete, it actually gets tougher when immersed in water for a while , they are really strong/sturdy, and easy to build ,there are many of the ww2 concrete barges left up british waterways, or used to stop erosion, they mainly survive now due to the fact that they are wortless as scrap.Edit to add , another reason the Mosquito was designed the way it was and a success, is that it used workers and materials(wood) from the furniture industries of britain at the time , which did not compete with other labour and materials used in more "modern" metal designs, as an aside, even if you cant show the World at War on here, it is a defo for showing to your youngest when they are old enough, an amazing historically important series, whose story, unless retold, may end up almost forgotten in the next generations.

Don't forget that the airplanes responsible for damage to the Bismark which disabled her enough that it was eventually caught were Swordfish. This was a string and canvas torpedo biplane. It had a crew of 2 in an open cockpit and was armed with one machine guNnand a torpedo - one of which damaged her steering allowing the Royal Navy to catch and finish her.
