Wrecks of Midway - The Grave of the Aircraft Carriers

The Battle of Midway is, perhaps, the most famous naval battle of the Second World War. Rivaled only by the sinking of Bismarck. And with good reason, as while the Imperial Japanese Navy certainly had bite left to it, the Japanese would never reach the same heights again.
And yet, we've only found three of the shipwrecks of this battle. Three of the aircraft carriers, two Japanese and one American. These wrecks are a stark contrast with each other, between torn and twisted ruins...and a largely intact time capsule.
It is interesting to compare them, in this regard.

There is a report just this week that the British are investigating scrap iron at Indonesia wrecking yards they have identified as coming off the two British battle ships sunk early in the war. Even though the international community considers sunk Navy ships to be war graves and to be left alone Indonesia and China are salvaging the metals. There are multiple ship wrecks that no longer exist completely gone.
@ericscottstevens
@ericscottstevens 10 месяцев назад
This is because of the pre atom bomb age low-background steel. All metal now has traces of nuclear fallout. in it. and the production medical instruments need low-background steel. Several sunken Dutch warships have been stripped to their keel line or mud line by trawling the wrecks. China is entirely responsible and photo proof exists of large rusty scrap metal being piled at collection centers for processing. As for the Midway wrecks probably no scrapping will occur as China knows the US would be watching that area closely.

My father was aboard the USS Hammann when she was torpedoed and sunk, he was almost killed by the explosion when the stern went under. He was scarred physically and mentally the rest of his life. Thank you for mentioning this great ship by name, so many just glaze over her as “a destroyer “ that was sunk, I’m sure the men she rescued off the Lexington in the Coral Sea remember her name well..

Thanks for sharing. I think we forget what it was like for the sailors, no matter what navy they served in, to experience the horror of having their ship, their home, blasted and burned from under them. People who fight for their countries don't start wars, but they bear the consequences of fighting in them.
@jdrake8738

The Destroyers played SUCH an important role in the war... they were the ones that got in the way of some of the worst of the fighting, and, early in the war, their torpedoes were just awful.... they also took the worst of heavy seas and having the least amount of fuel... they fought big ships and subs and they were true heroes! Hard as nails...
@Ibuki01
@Ibuki01 10 месяцев назад
Didn't Hamman's depth charges explode when she went under? There may not be much to find but confetti... I've heard of several cases where a destroyer's depth charges exploded as it sank, and a recent book I read dealing with the concussive effect of underwater explosions doesn't paint a pretty picture of the effects that causes on survivors in the water...

@@SWog617 That's because you're an a__hole. Those pilots had no idea that their attack turned into a "Day of Infamy", and that the declaration of war was delayed because of a slow translation. Actually, any Japanese pilot who took off on June 4th and was aloft while they were bombed had to watch their carrier burn, then ditched at sea due to fuel exhaustion with no place to land, aside from some of the morning CAP fighters who were able to recover aboard Hiryu. None of the Japanese aircraft were away on strikes when their ships were hit. Any aloft at the time of the bombings were defensive fighters protecting their ships.

@carloscisneros9081
@carloscisneros9081 9 месяцев назад
A great day that came at a very high cost for the flyboys. Enterprise lost most of her TBDs, and roughly 2/3rds of her SBDs from the morning strike. A few of those missing aircrew would be rescued, but not the majority. Hornet's Air Group, aside from Torpedo 8, performed abysmally on June 4. They missed the morning action, all the fighters ran out of fuel on the morning strike and ditched, and the SBDs didn't hit anything in the evening when they finally did find the enemy. Yorktown's Air Group performed best in the morning strike, delivering a somewhat co ordinated attack, but still took significant losses of TBDs. The surviving fighters and SBDs from Yorktown would go on to augment the heavily depleted Enterprise Air Group for the rest of the battle.

The Kaga and Akagi were converted differently than the Lexington Class and also were changed several times in their careers. I suspect that the hanger and flight deck were not as well supported and that, along with the extreme heat, allowed them to be torn away as the ship sank.
@isegata1
@isegata1 9 месяцев назад
The IJN's aircraft carriers were built in a very different way depending on the circumstances at the time of their construction, which is very understandable since the budget and shipbuilding docks were limited. The aircraft carrier "Akagi" was built as the second ship of the cruiser battleship Amagi class, but during its construction, the two ships "Amagi and Akagi" were converted to aircraft carriers by the Washington Convention. However, the construction of the "Amagi" was cancelled due to damage to the hull caused by the Great Kanto Earthquake, and the first ship of the battleship Kaga class, which was to become the target ship, was converted to an aircraft carrier. As Japan's first large mainline aircraft carriers, the "Akagi and Kaga" are easily distinguishable from each other as they are distinctive ships because they were converted separately from a battlecruiser and a battleship.

It's not because the decks were made of wood. Actually they like all the US carriers were wood planked over thin steel. Wood was used on decks because it was cheap to fix or replace, it was less slippery when wet and it didn't get so hot in under the sun. The reason the Japanese carriers burnt so badly was do to poor ventilation and storage of av gas. Lexington suffered the same fate. Starting with Ranger the American carrier decks were even more open and just raised platforms than the Japanese with massive shutters all along the sides for ultra ventilation.

Of all Japanese carriers only Taiho and the Shinano had armored flight decks. Not to say they did not have armored decks, they were just lower on the ships profile.. Yet the IJN ship designers believed that a cavern type enclosed hangar deck of were less of a liability as they predicted bombs exploding inside the enclosed hangars, the explosive force would be directed outward horizontally rather than in upward vertical force compromising the flight deck. On 4th of June, 1942.the IJN watched 2 of these types of carriers burn like great wood kiln furnaces.

It was a good and educational video. If the Imperial Japanese Navy had been able to deploy six aircraft carriers in this operation, the Imperial Japanese Navy might have won. Simulations conducted within the Japanese Imperial Navy before the operation also showed similar results. However, in reality, even though two ships were damaged just before, the operation continued with four ships. The decision was probably made in anticipation of the American military becoming stronger while waiting for the two ships to be repaired.

USS Hammann was hit by four type 21 torpedoes. I doubt there is much left to find.

I'm not sure how much information is readily available, but you should expand this concept to other engagements. Maybe Savo island?

Great video. Just a small clarification… The Japanese carrier is called the Kaga, not the Kagi (or that’s how you pronounced it on the video).

Kaga and Akagi. Both Japanese aircraft carriers, but two different ships which sank close to each other because they were part of the same carrier group.

Hammann is probably scattered debris since the depth charges exploded. If there is a wreck I hope that it willbe discovered.

It is also possible that the pieces were small enough to be buried under the bottom mud.

I was thinking that it possible, not likely, but possible that the USS Hammann could be under the Yorktown wreck.
@carloscisneros9081
@carloscisneros9081 9 месяцев назад
Not likely. USS Hammann sank within minutes of being torpedoed while USS Yorktown stayed afloat and drifting until the next morning. Depending upon winds and currents, she probably moved several miles.

It’s crazy how we are at the point where any ship from ww2 that hasn’t been found yet has been down there longer than it took for the titanic to be found

Titanic was on a designated route. These warships were... until they had to take evasive action during warfare, hence why you don't have a precise area where they went down at.

Excellent! Theyre all pretty deep. Glad to see Yorktown in such good shape and still displaying her Navy Grey. Looks like the Japanese ships hold up about the same as their cars. I've owned a Honda car Nd a Toyota pickup. Rustbuckets.

I just realllly hope they never end up in a chinese scrap yard like several other WW2 warships have in recent years. (Its disgusting that war graves were violated like that, simply for monetary gain. And it seems highly unlikely that anyone will ever be held accountable....lets just hope that lessons were learned from that and the Japanese and American governments can band together and protect these wrecks somehow)

so much different is the steel - US' is of far better quality, than Japanese... no offense - but, me being in international shipping in 70s-80s-90s - the same steel quality issue goes historically further - Japanese, Romanian and Polish built vessels (and talking of a used (s/h) units) - are usually a rust buckets, compared to Scandinavian or Geran built.
