We are about 2 months apart in age and obviously you remember when it was about topping the last. Now it's about making it easy to top yourself by making trash. Common misconception. If you do the history the term was first coined as a way to reference a written verse that wasn't placed on any specific record. A la any radio freestyle you've pretty much ever heard. Then the off the top era came evolved from there but alas, the written free verse still lives on. Thanks for listening either way!

@@zachmarsh6608 i think the reason why people didn’t go too hard on differentiating and kept the same term for both is because people can mostly tell the difference as you just did. I used to call them Freeverse’s or for a while a Wrekmix which was my take on a remix. But then it just felt like a reach cuz on every radio show and mix tapes still people just call you rapping on someone else’s beat a freestyle so I just gave up trying to relabel it.
