Anytime you use the words "lock flow" in a Jeet Kune Do setting, you're actually talking about a Filipino Kali training method using locks from a mix of arts... keep in mind that locking (like disarming), "should be incidental if not accidental", a phrase which I'm sure you both repeatedly heard before... it's imperative to first "gain an attachment" before implementing the lock whether that comes from them "committing" to you or you forcing the attachment

Ed I really enjoyed the video I am about 5 months away from my black belt test at the JKD school I attend in Mississippi. I came here from Florida 3 years ago after doing private study in Isshinryu. My sensei in Isshinryu is married to a woman who years ago was Segal's housekeeper. She is a martial artist in her own right as well and she showed my wife and I some moves that Segal had taught her. I totally agree with you he has gotten a bunch of hate in recent years. But I digress. I was taught traditional Isshinryu not sporterized karate and we have wristlocks that look very similar to stuff you did in this video.

Great video! My lock flow is slightly different. I would love to compare notes at some time! The two times I have used outside wrist locks in fights, they happened by hand recognizing a touch and I recognized to it. Great comment about commitment! Most people aren't Icy Mike. They over commit. A great comment about how more practical ways to train and do the movements.

JKD is an ever evolving art if it works its worth learning.
@gw1357
@gw1357 2 года назад
As explained in the video, you need to bait the opponent into over-committing in order to make the aikido applicable. Ok...but, that's a big if. Also, there are innumerable other ways across all systems to deal with an over-committed punch. Sure, I can diversify my ability to finish by adding this, but it seems like an inefficient expenditure of training time to me. Maybe it makes more sense if you're building on the foundation of another Japanese system like karate or jiujitsu. But if I'm looking to add joint mobilizations to JKD, I think I might have an easier time integrating bits from Eagle Claw kung fu (just one example), Kali, or Silat than Aikido. I'm just speculating though. I think its cool the way he's trying to infuse more practicality into Aikido.

So you know about Jeet Kune Do original and Jeet Kune Do Concepts so which one do you think I should learn which one works more
@ianbrewster8934
@ianbrewster8934 2 года назад
My theory is a good concept school should have Original JKD at it's core. The 5 ways if attack, efficiency, centerline theory, ranges etc. should all be part of JKD..... I think it's kind of like when people talk about nogi BJJ vs gi BJJ.... The core principles are the same. JKD Concepts should have the same core principles as original jkd. Yes there are other techniques and also principles from other arts but the fundamentals should be there. Does That make sense?

Cool Stuff. Cringe with “combative aikido”. In Japanese that translates to Aikijujitsu. Which is where aikido comes from after removing the jutsu or combat element.

Giggling so hard b/c I've done that before *accidentally bonk with stick* "AAAH! RUN AWAY!" If ever you're in the Phoenix metro area, drop me a line and i'd be happy to show you a locking drill my sensei called '18 grappling hands" although I only recall the first 10-11 and there're actually way more than 18 in the drill so I don't know why it's called that...

I would sort of caveat this with the disclaimer: if you want to defend yourself in a committed real life situation, already being good at these techniques, this is a good use of your time to make them functional. However, not knowing these beforehand, you can probably find a better use for your time, unless you find them incredibly fun to do!

Isn't there mention in The Tao of Chin Na? Or did I read that somewhere else? In my much younger days, when I first got into JKD, something I read prompted me to buy a huge book on Chin Na to study some of their joint manipulations.

I respect everyone in the martial arts RU-vid sphere I'm subscribed to, and I would love to spar Icy Mike with MMA gloves and try to show the validity of JKD traps and locks. Much love. (I'm not saying I would win, of course, just saying I'm willing to learn of the faults of myself as well as show some of the "context" that is needed for certain techniques of JKD and Wing Chun.)

@@metrolinamartialarts extremely. Which, I find it a little weird how some people claim that certain moves won't work because they've never see them attempted. Yes, tape is good, however, martial arts is finally at a time where it can all be taped. Not everything has been yet, so we just have to see what can work versus who tried to and what the context of the fight was. There's so much more to martial arts than technique and physical ability. But, time will tell and we'll all eventually end up like JKD, if the sport of MMA hasn't shown that already lol.
