I never really appreciated my homeland, the USA, until I lived abroad for many years. That included several stints living under authoritarian regimes and/or dictatorships, but also in various wildernesses as much as possible. They were wild and amazing times, and I learned to see myself and my home country with a very critical eye. Something that did emerge in my dissection was exactly what this gentle Scouser brought to light in this interview. Well done, mate.

@@juanitaraiyemo7030 There are things to love and hate about every country. I hope you find peace, and not just hate. But yes, had I been enslaved in the ways of that brutal historical era, it would be a very different story.

AN INJECTION OF PATRIOTISM FROM ABROAD I confess I have never heard of Roger Bennett before today, but he really impresses me. I also confess that I am an American who has given up on America... or at least the possibility that we will ever actually achieve the dream of allegiance to truth, justice and equality that has always stood in the shadows calling out to us. These are dark times. The world sourly needs the hope that this dream of America has represented to so many here and abroad for so long, more than ever before. Will that dream always be just that, only a dream? Or do we have what it takes to recover from the chokehold right-wing radicalism has on it right now? That really is the question here, isn't it? Immigrants like Roger Bennett can help make this happen. The dream is helpful, because it gives us something to fight for, but that battle will not be easy.

Yeah!!! Reagan and Thatcher send the factories to China. So many people lost their jobs. Roger had to move because he watched American propaganda on TV.. That is not good news for millions of people here at home & abroad..

He grew up in a city that was at the failed end of colonialism and was still heavily invested in a class structure. Probably a deary place with crumbling infrastructure, masses of people trapped in a low-income stratum in a former hub of the industrial heartland. He should go to the rust belt, coal country, or the northern plains. Anybody can win ... but not everybody not even close. He is also white and Irish ... he does not understand how that allowed him to step over 100 million people in the line.

I bet he does understand. Look it's not perfect but in order to form a more perfect union let's not write US epitaph just yet... He wasn't trying to game the system (US citizen) he did have advantages though.

Irish? And why do you rush to judge this man? And with an issue beside the point? As a regular listener to his podcast, I can comfortably say that Roger Bennett overflows with empathy for others-probably much more so than myself.

Even the prince Harry still wants to live in America. So Americans, please value & cherish what you have such as American democracy. Please do not destroy it like you just did on January 6. Please don’t be fooled by trump. Trump just does what Putin wants him to do because trump wants Putin’s money. Please follow the money.

I’m a Brit and I feel the exact same way. I only watch US news, I get the NYT delivered every day, I have a subscription to Rolling Stone and I’m studying for a US law degree. I must read this book - I feel like we’d have a lot in common. Edit: plus my country is going to the dogs.

Any country that can elect Trump - and, after all he did, not see it is a dreadful mistake (he still attracts the support of almost half the population) is going to the dogs faster than the UK is. The decline of the US is now written in stone and clear for all to see. All empires crumble and fall. The only advantage of the reign of Trump is that it will enable future historians to more easily pinpoint the most obvious signs of that decline on a pivotal moment in it's history. I'm not anti American BTW . I have lived and workd in US for quite some time - and did consider moving there permanently . Looking back, I'm glad I didn't.

Especially with the Fourth of July in a few days, this is all the more resonant a take from an immigrant and recent citizen. A very insightful and especially articulate one, a wordsmith with that lovable dose of English eccentricity. And I'm also an Anglophile, despite Brexit, etc.

The, difference of his experience becoming An American...is choice and desire to be here and freedom to make that option! Not, all were so lucky or wanted to be here!!! And, died to escape...to be free! Not, every story of coming " to america" is a hope, dream, desire, but, a unwanted NIGHTMARE! THE DREAM YOU HAVE IS WONDERFUL...AND I WISH YOU A AWESOME LIFE!!!
