I think procrastinating one book project by jumping into another is healthy. At least it is for my brain. It gives you perspective and space from the first while stoking your fires and creativity with the second. Often I'll come back to the first project with more energy and enthusiasm! No one says writing has to be linear, or that you can't jump around, or that you have to torture yourself through the first project before you're "allowed" to be excited about something else...or really, any of those kinds of rules! That's one of the reasons I love writing so much.

Ok ok - not if you're a ghostwriter writing for a client, but if it's your novel? You make the rules!

I love this! I find I need to focus on one story at a time but the creativity of thinking of new stories is always there.
@MichelleSchustermanAuthor
@MichelleSchustermanAuthor Год назад
Absolutely this!! I'm only wary of talking about it because I know it's common for newer writers to abandon their first project to chase a new idea out of fear/frustration because they're discovering how tough the process of writing a novel actually is...which was totally me back in the day. :)

"That 30,000 word count is really appealing to me right now." Yes, yes, yes. Which is why I do occasional novellas. ARGH! LOL Can't wait to see what you come up with. I recently read The Dog's Meow and loved it!!!

Congratulations on your lightning in a bottle idea. Those are always fun! And it'll be a good productivator for your other two projects while still giving you something new to pitch. Though, I will say I'm impressed that you managed to wrap up two novels already with only 30k for a mystery. (Hello, Rosa!)
@MichelleSchustermanAuthor
@MichelleSchustermanAuthor Год назад
Thanks so much!! :) And yeah, it's kind of a younger MG, hence the shorter word count. The mystery is pretty simple and the whole story takes place in just a few days. But I think there's still room for some fun twists in there! :)

Great video, Michelle! I think procrastination gets a bad rap sometimes lolz. For instance, I thought I was procrastinating with Project Kpop because I couldnt draft while quieting my perfectionist inner critic. However, without that unscheduled delay I wouldve never realised that this story needs to be written as episodes (serial fiction) instead of a novel. Had I rushed into drafting, I probably wouldnt have discovered that. Have a great weekend, Michelle! Hi Rosa :-)
@MichelleSchustermanAuthor
@MichelleSchustermanAuthor Год назад
Thanks Avi!! That inner critic will just NOT shut up sometimes lol. But that sounds like a really important revelation, so hey - a win!!!

Oh, man, can I relate to that "endless" feeling. Right there with you. 😅I like your solution, though, and I like how efficient you are in recognizing the problem (feeling demoralized) and immediately implementing a solution (working on something you can tackle much easier). I wish you all the luck!

Project update: I have finished the first draft of my 90K-word novel, one year and one day after starting it. The story was heavily outlined and so the draft is pretty clean. My weekly critique partner enjoyed it. I'm going to implement some minor edits and then have a few beta readers give it a whack. Meanwhile, I have to finish the other book in this series to be able to launch them all. Meanwhile meanwhile, I keep having ideas that I take notes on for three other series!

Slowly turning 2/3s of a YA novel to include better use of characters- I added a really dynamic character that might help me finish the story. I can add backstories, character events, good descriptions, cautiously optimistic

I just killed my second darling (character) in my book. But I’ve kept these two ideas in another file. Both would have made it decidedly supernatural, something I think I want to avoid that for this project. I miss it, but I think it will make a better final work.🤷‍♂️

The temptation's been whispering in my ear the last week or so, WHILE I'm querying the currently finished book.

@MichelleSchustermanAuthor Год назад
Well hey, if that first book is already on the query-go-round, why not start the next one??
@ravensthatflywiththenightm7319
@@MichelleSchustermanAuthor That was the plan as soon as the first book was finished in December. But for some reason I haven't been hit with the inspiration to start the second book, even though I already have a story for it. It's the strangest writer's block I've ever encountered.
@ravensthatflywiththenightm7319
@@MichelleSchustermanAuthor But yes you're right, I should get started on that second book already.

Was looking in my calendar today and it said it was your birthday yesterday??? I'm assuming you mentioned it in a video, so Happy Belated Birthday??? As for the writing, I'm there with you in taking time to refresh your brain on simpler stories than the ones you were currently writing. After finishing my second book in the series I'm querying (it came in at a shockingly short 78k which will leave loads of room for edits) I've stepped back for a bit before doing any edits and am itching to work more on a different series my brain had previously put on hold. Somehow that book, despite being a supernatural thriller, is easier to write than the one I'm on now. Lol. Anyway, I hope that if it was your birthday that it was a good one. And I hope your work and writing is going well and that your giddiness at starting this MG book pays off and that you enjoy every moment of writing it. Shabbat Shalom. Have an awesome weekend. ❤
@MichelleSchustermanAuthor
@MichelleSchustermanAuthor Год назад
Awww K, I can't believe you put that in your calendar! That's so nice of you - and yes it was :) Thank you so much!! 78k sounds VERY short based on what you've told me about your drafts! 😂But I really do think our brains just need to shift gears sometimes - this is why it's always nice to have more than one project going, imo.

While having sent my second book to the copy editors, I have begun my third. There's a four-week turnaround for the editor. I foolishly set a daily word count of a thousand words a day and am writing in Atticus and it holds you accountable for word count. It's a tool for that purpose. I am a discovery writer and I am not sure where it's going but I have some ideas that will fit in along the way. I some ways I wish that I had plotted but because I am being railroaded into my word count, I just have to get on with it. When my second book comes back, I will have to find time to work on the edits that have been done by the editor and also make sure that there are no small formatting issues that need to be tackled before it's finished as far as the text is concerned. Then due to necessary delays, I will be working with the illustrator on my cover and 23 spot illustrations for the chapter headings, I have a day job and have to work around it So. it's not easy. It's good that I am a middle-grade writer because if I had a much bigger word count, I might struggle, in fact I know I would. So I know where you're coming from having two books on the go.
@MichelleSchustermanAuthor
@MichelleSchustermanAuthor Год назад
Wow, I'm so impressed that you're managing all of these projects at once with a day job! That's fantastic - and congrats on sending that second book to the copyeditors!

Hi Michelle! First time commenter, although I've been watching your videos for a while. I was wondering if you would ever do a video about the recent literary controversy regarding the Roald Dahl books being edited for content many years after they were released? I've always thought of myself as a person who thinks that art should stand as a representation of the time it was produced in but I also really understand, as a queer person, that leaving certain language in a book, or show, or film could be potentially harmful to people of the community and continue to fuel hate in some people outside of the community. I know this is a complicated one but I would still love to hear your thoughts about it!
@MichelleSchustermanAuthor
@MichelleSchustermanAuthor Год назад
Hi Matthew! Thanks for commenting (and watching :) Man, that is for sure a complicated topic. I actually did consider making a video about this but to be honest, I haven't had a chance to thoroughly research it yet, and I don't want to put a video out there unless I've done the work. I did see some of the changes and my gut reaction was that it's wrong to do that posthumously (even with the approval of his estate). I know changes have been made to his books in the past for sensitivity reasons, but he was still around and approved those changes himself, which is his prerogative. So...yeah! LOL this is why I haven't filmed anything yet! It's complicated and I'm still not quite sure how I feel about it!

Hi Michelle, I totally get that! It is a very complicated issue. I tend to agree with you that maybe it’s wrong to do it without the consent of the author. Thanks for all of the great content. Always looking forward to your next video! 😊
