The way I do my midi drum tracks is I record multiple tracks in real-time. Example, I put the kick drum on one track and perform live using a keyboard. To help me keep the beat I would strike a key for the kick drum but since the snare hasn't been recorded yet I would thump on the table. I know it's weird but it's a lot faster than drawing midi notes, i just hate drawing midi notes. Anyway it's best to have separate track for drums, it's easier when mixing. After that, i quantize to check for errors
@charlesurdy-barnes413
@charlesurdy-barnes413 5 лет назад
His instruction is very good. But unfortunately, my brain doesn't work that way. I can't keep up. I feel more comfortable following your procedures. I like how you thump the table. However it might sound to some it is a great tip for those who think more like you and me. Could you do a video showing your process. I seem to get it more for my ADHD learning processes
@fef6203
@fef6203 4 года назад
Depends on the person I suppose, but it's waaay faster literally clicking in the notes then actually performing them. Isn't that obvious? Also as sombody who has over 40 + tracks in a song having the drums confined to one track is much simpler than a separate track for each drum-piece. Mixing can always be done, but the composition remains more important.
@DaleStrickland
@DaleStrickland 3 года назад
That's exactly how I've considered doing it, except not quantizing it if I'm looking for a more human-sounding mix

Do i need to have a MIDI to do this type of things just wanting to spice up my covers
@thomasmoore7013
@thomasmoore7013 3 года назад
Well, "a MIDI" isn't a singular thing. There are digital instruments which are controlled either by a MIDI controller (such as an electric keyboard) or directly by your DAW (Digital Audio Workstation). So in order to make a MIDI drum beat you would at least need the digital instrument, and possibly a MIDI controller depending on whether you wanted to play the part yourself or just draw it into the track. So if your question was "Do I need a MIDI controller" then the answer is: no, as long as you have a digital instrument and a DAW to put it in.

I think when it comes to writing drum parts, it is my weak point. I can produce polyrhythms and repeatable complex grooves however, fills are something I have not done very often as I don't fully comprehend their utility in musical narrative. I struggle to ascertain what form the paintbrushes that are drum fills give to the overall painting of music.
@TheMusicLab

I see drum fills as a use for transitions... If you want to go from one section to another you can use a fill to build to that change and really emphasize the new section arriving! ... That how I have always viewed them anyway
