It's crazy. I was so scared of my math teachers and too afraid to ask questions because I know they would ridicule me over a question. Over time, I had a fear of math and my foundation became flimsy. So here I am at 23, starting over at my own pace, enjoying mathematics :)! Cheers mate.
Honsestly though, if a teacher ridicules you for asking questions it looks bad on them, not you. I would actually report it to someone in the main office. If you feel this way and are uncomfortable in asking questions because you think you will be ridiculed by the teacher, and or, students, then let it be known. If it gets someone in trouble then that's their bad for thinking that you would put up with disrespect.

I’m past college and grad school.. all of it in science meaning bachelor in science etc.. but middle school were the 2 years of rebellion where I did no homework and didn’t care about school. It did real damage further ahead as I could not do these word problem efficiently. The knowledge was necessary in order to do well on grad school entry exams! And I’ve found off and on through my life (now in my 30s) that its valuable. You think stuff like this isn’t important but it so is. I totally screwed myself by not paying attention those 2 years. Should any kids read this.. this right here.. you’re gonna need this! Heed my warning!

Hello. Thank you for your comment. If you have a number x divided by two, then that will just be x/2. If that is then added to seven, it should be 7+x/2. Does that make sense? And "7y" means that 7 is being multiplied by some unknown number, y. When the number and the variable are right next to one another, it's multiplication. Hope this helps!
That’s a good question. You cannot use the ‘less than’ symbol in this context. If it said “six is less than…” then you could. But it says, “six less than.” Hope that helps!
Switch the order when i see "than" This has been agonizing me, I can't exactly pinpoint it but i know im missing something My teacher didn't tell me this (at least what im aware of)
SNJ Productions You have to be careful with the order of the terms. While addition is indeed commutative and the order in which it occurs doesn’t matter, subtraction is not that way. For example, “The difference of four and a number” is 4-n, and definitely not n-4. That is the single most common mistake I see from students when it comes to this lesson. My suggestion would be to stick to the order given in the sentence, that way when it comes to other operations, you don’t have to worry about making a mistake. Hope that helps!
Here's a great hint: Whenever a sentence starts with "The difference of" (subtraction) or "The sum of" (addition), you automatically put that part of the equation at the END of your equation. For example: "The difference of" a number and 2. Answer: n - 2 "The sum of" a number and 6. Answer: n + 6 Here's a slightly more intricate example: "The sum of" three times a number and 7. Answer: 3n + 7 I hope this helps. I found that simple rule of thumb helpful.
If it says “a number, less 8” then it will be n-8 because you’re starting with the number then taking 8 away from it. However, if it says “a number less than 8” it will be 8-n. Hopefully that’s not too confusing! :-)
When you have to search on your own how to answer your module because your teacher doesn't explain or discuss 😅 they are just waiting for the checking of module they don't care whether they discuss it or not.

@@sophiamoreira7015 If Amy is 10 years old and Carly is 4 years older, than Carly will be (10+4) years old. I didn’t see any variables needed in the problem since you know all the values already. Thoughts?
@@hsmathsolutions just double checking to see if I’m reading it the right way. Sometimes word can be tricky, but I have to write an expression that represents Carly’s age. So 10+4=x. (X meaning Carly’s age being represented?)
