Writing is SO HARD. Every time I reread what I previously wrote in an attempt to edit, it turns into a cringefest, and I just give up. Good for you for pushing forward!

Try practicing what I call nuetral self judgement (please, if you come up with a better name, let me know!); analyze some aspect of yourself or your work without talking crap. For example, "I need to work on my descriptions," instead of, "I suck at description, because I'm a terrible writer, and I'll never sell a single book!" If you are able to look at yourself or your work without being demeaning, it will hurt less, and it will be easier to be objective about what's working and what's not.

@@NagisaNiki That kinda works, but it's more like a practice of constructive self criticism. I can't figure out a term that's not clunky, but it has changed my life :)

Just keep on writing, I noticed that some of the recent things I’ve written recently are far much better than what I wrote some 2 years ago. So it actually gets better as long as you keep writing. Also, reading helps by giving you perspective and style, you learn style by reading a lot.

I started watching your channel in 2019 and this period of time (2019-2022) was the first time in my whole life (I'll be 28 in August) that I heard that weirdly simple, yet unattainable concept... "You can write just for fun" "You can have hobbies that don't lead to anything" "You can play the guitar for yourself, even if you're not that good" And my god, this was so refreshing Cari! It changed my whole perspective on things. As humans, we bind ourselves in all these weird rules and beliefs, but it's not worth it. Life's too damn short! I have, since then, been trying to spread the gospel to anyone who will listen to me :D little by little, we may just change things for the better

I'm horrible at writing my books because i love writing lore and worldbuilding and characters but not so much the story as a cohesive beginning-middle-end thing. I keep writing scenes and sometimes i don't even know the story i want to tell, but the characters are so real to me that i just write down their adventures until the story reveals itself to me

I wish you (and all writers) tons of that amazing feeling of things falling together! One of my favorite highs lol. I think it comes with walking the line between pantser and plotter, when something that I planted comes back in a big way I didn't expect. When I'm stuck I write down what I know, the problems and the needs, and sometimes that teases something out that helps me move forward. I wish I were more visual when it comes to writing scenes--I feel like my characters talk and move in front of a hastily painted sheet instead of a setting.

As a creative writing major in my last semester of college, I am dying. This video gave me that boost of motivation I need to write but I have to focus on my thesis pieces, but then I only get spurts of inspiration to write or nothing gets done so the struggle is here and present. I totally get the scary feelings when rewriting a whole piece. I have tons of stories from when I was in high school that are cringe that I need to just work up the courage to rewrite and then I have new stories I love, but YA fantasy is difficult to finish even when focusing on one at a time. In conclusion: I loved this video, and totally relate to all the fears and struggles. Side Note: the dog pillow on your couch scared the crap out of me! I kept looking at it going "did Cari get a dog, why are they just staring?"

Hey! I was a creative writing major and I just want to say that the burnout is real! Don't be afraid to take a few months (or more) off writing after you graduate to give your creativity some time to build back up. I now believe that an important part of writing is occasionally taking breaks, and school definitely isn't good at allowing that, so make sure to take care of yourself once you're done. ❤️ You'll for sure get your inspiration back with time!

I also love writing just for the sake of writing! I toyed around with the thought of publishing in the past, but honestly just the thought of it stresses me out. I just want to write for my own enjoyment, while not thinking about what's marketable or even what other people might think of it. I just like to think of it as having my own little world that I can escape into and enjoy on my own.

Hey Cari, I’m so glad that you’re writing. It’s been forever since I’ve written myself. It hasn’t been the right season for me, but one of my favorite quotes from “Someday” by David Levithan describes my stage of writing. “I was still observing, and hadn’t yet found the words.” I think writers put too much pressure on themselves. The words will come when it’s time.

Honestly, this was the single most inspiring thing in this week which really motivates me to start writing again. Especially because I struggle with the same problem, being too visual. It's so funny (but demotivating sometimes) when you can write like 4k words and then you realize you only wrote about how someone sat down on a chair lol. Jk, but yeah, I can totally relate to that and will definitely try make some things shorter as you did. Also, I think it is soo easy to forget that you SHOULD enjoy writing and the process. So, I'm really glad you could find your way back to the fun part of the whole thing! Thank you for the tips and never good luck with the rest of your novel!

Loved this little vlog! (Shoutout to the Misery song, I love to hear it in your vlogs!) I read or heard about this years ago: writers can be either architects or gardeners (I think it was G.R.R. Martin who said it? Not sure). Architects plan out everything, basically meticulously and then sit down and write. But gardeners have more of a general idea or a "seed" which they kind of "plant" and start writing from there and see where it leads them. I'm honestly a mix of both, depends on the idea I have. But it's really lovely to see you doing this, inspires me to get back into writing (the last story I wrote was in April of 2020, sheesh). I hope you do more of these :))

I'm writing stories (mostly fantasy) for years but I rarely read fantasy at all. Mostly classics and literature fiction lately and that helps me to avoid clichés and creating something unique for me. Because I don't know a book that has the same elements and story. Some are published on Wattpad and I got feedback that my stories are actually cliché-free and unique which makes me very proud. And I actually don't enjoy reading fantasy at all. But I love to write because you don't need too much life experience to make up a story because not everything has to be realistic and most of the situation isn't day to day. Which is perfect for me because I live in a nutshell and just want to spend my whole day writing, reading and watching videos, so yeah. To not write what you read is very helpful as Cari said.

Bae Suah's 'Untold Night and Day' reads like a fever dream set in Seoul. Finally, I have not read this book but have been recommended 'No-one writes back' by Eun-Jin Jang.

Been a silent viewer (is that what you call it? Haha) for a few years now. This video totally resonates with me, as someone who picked up novel-writing at the start of the pandemic. I’ve always been more of a short story writer so I had no idea what I was doing while I started writing my first novel. I’ve now finished 3 novel drafts and on my fourth. :) I’m also kind of an in-betweener of a plotter and a pantser. I have kind of a weird process in that I usually just write the first chapter with a vague idea of a character and let that character run the chapter. Then from there I kind of write a rough outline that I don’t usually follow. But it’s always great to have when I’m getting stuck and have no idea what I need to think about next. Sorry for rambling! Thanks for sharing this bit about your writing life and I hope it remains fulfilling (for all of us ☺️)

Don’t lose your own voice - within it are the real grains of truth that you won’t find in the endless stream of formulaic ‘written to market’ books out there. If there are conventions, break them! I read your tumblr stuff - it’s thought provoking, it’s true and it’s powerful - trust yourself and the words will be there - trust yourself and the stories will come - don’t lose your own voice!🤗

Overwriting is valid. I wish I was in your shoes because you have it all written down you just have to trim is. Meanwhile I can’t explain things properly and underwrite 😂

I don’t know if you’ve read Sue Monk Kidd’s Book of Longings, but I feel compelled to recommend it to you.

Cari have you ever read something by a brazilian author? If not I highly recommend Machado de Assis, Jorge Amado and Clarice Lispector. There are many others but I think these are the ones most translated to english 😊

as a hobby writer for about as long as i can write -- the most annoying thing about it is when you tell people you write/say it's your hobby and people immediately ask a) can i read it? b) can you make me a character? like..... no?? no, thanks

I know no one is probably going to read this but I'm putting out there anyway: even if you think your not a "strong enough" writer to write something WRITE IT ANYWAY, it will be bad but that's okay! Your never going to get good if your too scared to write. (Which is scary, I know but so worth it!)

I’ll leave this advice from Neil Gaiman here for anyone that needs it; finish the first draft. The whole purpose of the second draft is to make it look like you knew what you were doing all along, but just finish that first draft.

Lol, this is so me! I feel like injust learned "she gestured to the window" is somehow more clear than "she pointed to the window and raised her chin." I feel dumb as a writer but as a reader it's obvious to me. Lol

I like to hear your process :) Writing has been my life for so long and I agree. Everyone should do it, it is so much fun! Are you planning on participating in NaNoWriMo (have you heard of it?) one day? :)

I love this vlog! I’m writing a psychological thriller! About 6- year old twins- they speak to a dark figure that their parents cannot see. Izzy and Gingers parents call 911 to dispatch police and first responders. Ginger and Izzy go to the hospital to be treated for Schizophrenia. Ginger and Izzy call the dark figure Father.

*SPOILER ALERT for Buffy for those who have never watched it. When you were talking about the original idea for your novel involving magic and sexism, I immediately thought of an episode of Buffy(shoutout 25th anniversary!), where we find out Tara's family raised her to think she was part demon, as a means of shaming and controlling her. *sidenote - right near the end of this video I noticed your dog cushion and mistakenly thought for a sec it was a real dog, possibly your family's dog😂 I was very confused!
