I installed a bad starter. Had that thing out 5 or 6 times before I figured it out. New one in, no shim…didn’t work. New one in with shim, didn’t work. Old one in with new shim, didn’t work. All the wiring checked fine…voltage at starter was good…didn’t work. Took the starter out and tried it and it worked. Old one didn’t. Reinstalled new one, didn’t work. Took it back to the parts store and had it swapped. Installed the new one…fired right up. Lesson learned after a half a day in the dirt? Don’t always trust that new parts work.

When I first started servicing, a trainer I had said you have to buy a 20 pack of BIC, not SHARPIE permanent markers. BIC have a better tip for marking things. Anyway a 20 pack of different colors. As you are disconnecting connections, pull out a different color and mark the connector and socket. It saves guessing and time in reconnecting things. Definitely worth the price of the markers several times over.

This is such a delight! Textbook-perfect diagnostics. Even experienced mechanics easily miss this sort of issue. Hands-down, one of my favorite repair videos yet. Let us know when you get one whose check engine bulb has been disabled since the Civil War. By the time the owner feels the need to have it seen...every sensor is trashed, 75% of the vacuum lines are plugged with nails, idle air bypass is screwed down to 100 ft/lb of torque, and the fuse box is a spider web of jumpers and aluminum foil.
@stevenrice47
@stevenrice47 Год назад
The different has nothing to do with experience. It's a matter of does the mechanic knows to ask the question "how is this suppose to be?" Yeah that car... I've worked on those. The worst is when someone lives in an emission controlled country buys such a car (because it was such a great deal) and now you're tasked to get it to pass emissions ...and the customer has no budget.
@TonyGingrich
@TonyGingrich Год назад
@@stevenrice47 That's exactly how those cars are able to exist in my state. We have virtually zero enforcement of emission standards here. A person can literally drive their car with straight headers on our streets, and no one will question them. We used to have a requirement for annual vehicle inspections, but that law was repealed a few years ago. Even then, no shops ever really performed a proper inspection. The application was only about $5, so the shops couldn't afford it. They lost money just on the time it took for the cashier to sell the sticker, and for someone to walk out and affix it to the windshield. The only practical requirement to pass a vehicle inspection, was to be able to drive it to the shop.

Its so funny - Being that I am in the enterprise IT industry and I work with servers, mainframes, arrays etc day to day- This SAME kind of thing is often what happens to one of those systems. Someone somewhere overlooked something or connected something to a different place than it should be and people end up chasing things down, replacing adapters and SFPs and causing downtime - because a data center tech or field engineer or god forbid someone who shouldnt even be touching the thing- didnt take the time to confirm - and we end up finding out later when a Good engineer is sitting there and says hey...... funny... this cable is labeled port 8 and its in port 0 ........ or something like that.

They would replace the sensors, then maybe the back ones too, then decide its the ECM, put another one of those in, then when just about everything is new and they decide it can't be any of those because it's all been changed, then start looking at the wiring. Eventually finding it is mixed up ( maybe ) then fixing the simple problem to justify replacing a dozen unnecessary items. Now THAT sounds more normal.

@stevewhiting556
@stevewhiting556 Год назад
Ray should be successful. The biggest issue to getting a new business off the ground is funding. His nearly half a million subscribers make sure that he has a second stream of revenue. I’ve seen a lot of good businesses fold because the company has to operate at a loss for too long before the owner gets a paycheck. I had a buddy of mine that started a vape store. He lasted 3 years. Between the rent, franchise fees, the inventory and other operating costs, he barely broke even. In 3 years he was rarely able to cut himself a paycheck. He was open 10 hours a day, 6 days a week and was his only employee. About 6 months before he closed, he finally hired a part time employee. Just paying that 1 small paycheck put him out of business. If he had a few hundred bucks coming in every week from another stream of revenue (like a RU-vid channel) he probably could have had a very successful business, but after a couple of years he was burned out. His lease was up and he was going to have to borrow money to pay his yearly franchise fee. He found another job, liquidated his inventory, paid all of his debts and now works for someone else. I hated it for him because he had a great shop and a great concept.

The change from having a data stream from not having a data stream made OBD systems much easier to diagnosis than the change to OBD-2 made. OBD-2 standardized the connector which helped a lot but being able to see a data stream was awesome. Having to back-probe every sensor or use a BOB ( break out box ) was a pain. Many changes happened from the early days of computer controlled systems. Some early GMs didn’t store codes after key cycle, that made fixing them real fun. SnapOn had a massive case just to hold all the adapters then we had an OBD-2 connector added with a massive set of keys we had to use to route the connector internals to the the proper pins. That SnapOn scanner needs to be retired for a new Autel or Launch scanner. Both makes better bang for the buck scanners now. Saw it right away from scan data, fuel trims ramped up and O2 resting lean on one bank and other ramping down and showing rich. Looked flip flopped and knowing these wiring setups plus having seen this before. Why Nissan used same connectors for both banks was a headache waiting to happen. Worked a short while at a Nissan dealer and saw these a few times.

When we open them up, we are appalled at the lack of quality in their work. We are consistently more expensive than they are, but our shop is 10x busier than theirs. I don’t understand what is so hard about being honest with a customer. I have no problem telling a customer that their equipment is not worth repairing after they just spent $200 at the other place where they did a crappy patch job. I will even bring them into the shop and disassemble it to show them why it should have never been “repaired” in the first place. I’ve gained a lot of market share that way.

Yes! This, is pertinent to my current interests, as I have a 1999 Pathfinder. Under the hood of this I could tell that the O2 sensors had been replaced. Nissan OEM sensors were supplied with a Blue sheath on the #1 (upsteam) O2 sensors; Red on #2 (downstream). I recently replaced my Bank 2 Sensor #2; it was fun (not!) routing and securing its cable behind the engine from below, to topside. (Note: The sensor itself was fine; its pre-heat element had failed, which the ECM monitors, and is checked on Texas' emissions tests.) Fantastic work, Ray. I will be watching the other videos you've done of this particular vehicle. 😉

I saw this in a forum a couple months back - it is a common problem with (IIRC) more than one Nissan truck. It is too easy to swap the upstream sensors. That results in #1 trying to control bank 2 and vice versa. It always results in one going too rich and the other going too lean. When we think about how the closed loop works it makes perfect sense: one bank says "I'm running really rich - I have to command leaner" and the other does the opposite.

I have certainly had some interesting experiences with electronics in cars. Low battery voltage making all kinds of seemingly unrelated issues, and also used an aftermarket brake switch in a Mercury Cougar that I exchanged and then went to OEM, as it simply didn't work right (aftermarket one made the brake lights flash then go out).

Yes, but you need to be careful that someone didn't repair the wiring and change the colors. Happens all the time, but you can usually see if it if you inspect everything carefully.

When I was working on a KC-130 in the early 2000s, a circuit breaker was popping for one of the lights at the rear of the aircraft. Pulled the bulb out of that light to open the circuit and checked the circuit for shorts and it checked good. I followed the power wire back and found a splice. Compared the wiring diagram to the markings on the wires and it turned out that it was a factory splice and it had been spliced wrong when it was built in the 50s. It had been spliced into the power circuit for the light on the opposite side. The assembly on the opposite side had indeed shorted to ground but since the splices were swapped we were looking at the wrong assembly based on the circuit breaker.

Hi Ray , I have a question if you can help me out . I own a Ford AU2 year of manufacture 2000 , my OBD2 code reader wont connect to the computer in it , works perfectly fine in my 2006 Holden Commodore (Chev Impala to you) , was wondering if you could steer me in the right direction to purchase a code reader that will diagnose vehicles built prior to those with OBD2 , I'm on a tight budget being an age pensioner , but still like to work on my own vehicles , but not having a scanner/code reader for older vehicles can be a pain in the ass ....any suggestions ?
@AT-wl9yq
@AT-wl9yq Год назад
2000 is obd2. There could be any number of reasons why the scanner isn't connecting. Most likely, the problem isn't your scanner. Here's something you can try and may get lucky. Look under the dash and locate the port you plug the scanner into. Follow the wires from the port and see what the harness plugs into. If it connects to a small black box, unplug the harness from the box and plug your scanner directly into the box itself. If the scanner starts working, just plug into the box any time you need to use it. If your car isn't set up like this then just check the port you plug the scanner in. Make sure all the pins are in good shape and all 16 are there. We don't have the same vehicles in the US, so an AU2 may be something completely different then our Fords. Also, I'm assuming the car is running OK and you just want to check the scanner. If that's not the case, and you're having issues, then you need to take it to someone that knows how to diag vehicles.

I'm not a pro. One of the new ones turned out to be bad. I had to get a shop to inform me of this but still I knew "shiny & new doesn't mean good".

I asked once on one of your video how often brake fluid needs changing. Someone replied every 2 years. So out of curiosity I booked my brakes in to get checked. I bought my car in 2018 and I had no idea of the state of the brakes till now. Turned out front pads were worn almost to the metal so mechanic changed that and stated the brake fluid was changed as it was still original from 2004 build and sludgy. I started to drive home and the whole car was shaking. I drove back to shop straight away and turned out he was kicking himself because He said he should have changed the rotors at the same time (I said he could if he needed to) so the old rotors weren't flat anymore for the new pads - and due to the new brake fluid the caliper had gummed up from the old fluid sludge still in the caliper internals. He couldn't push the car in neutral and handbrake off. The brakes were stuck on and burning. He waived the labour charge for the return and I did pay for the new rotors and caliper rebuild kits. He showed me the internals of the seals on the calipers, they were very clean but gummed up at the same time so couldn't release. It turned into a 5 hour job all up. (8:10 am - 11:15 am) and (12:10 pm - 15:10 pm). Even experienced mechanics have shit days - and mines fixed it up on his own money - I paid for the parts of course. And the labour for the morning part. He waived labour for the afternoon change out and rebuild because he said he should have done it all at the same time when I gave him the option.

I walked through your frustrations with you on this one. The sensors not being consistent, going back and forth… then it hit me at the same time as you (in the video) that the fuel trims were pegged on opposite ends, that could only mean the ecm is getting the data backwards. Your diag process is so enlightening, very methodical. You are a gentleman and a scholar Sir!!
