Join mathematician Edward Frenkel as he discusses how the elegant mathematical formulation of symmetry has been used throughout math and physics and could, through the Langlands program, give rise to a grand unified theory of mathematics.
This lecture was recorded on May 31, 2014, at the World Science Festival in New York City.

My hearing is not good. I'm sure this contributed to my difficulty in following parts of what he was saying. And I'm sorry to report that I've stopped before half way, in order to write this.

At timestamp 37:23, he uses the butterfly wings as an example of a symmetrical arrangement where the two wings can be exchanged. Unless the underside of the wings is identical to the top side, the wings could not be exchanged, so it would be a bad example. Do we have a lepidopterist to decide the issue ?
@safiulfaiyaz7038
@safiulfaiyaz7038 Год назад
If the underside were not equal then there would be a difference in the pysiology & morphology of the butterfly(difference in musculature & even in the nervous sytem etc), there would be zero evolutionary reaosn for such differneces as it does not serve to improve their fitness index. Atleast that is my educated guess, I am not a lepidopterist.

Although mathematics is great, it is not the biggest achievement of humanity. That one is the creation of the alphabet a few thousand years ago. Even today languages are extremely potent tool in computer science and they are the reason of the so called information revolution. Humans discovered how to talk to machines using a specific alphabet or language. I wonder what is next ? Who will discover the correct alphabet for communicating with the animals. I rather leave animals alone because humans always tend to manipulate and exploit others with language. As for mathematics...well mathematics is only a byproduct of the alphabet.

Does anyone know where to find the Robbert Dijkgraaf talk that Frenkel keeps referring to? Perhaps it is “The Past and Future of Unification,” which the WSF site says is coming soon…

About Evariste Galois ...brilliant but had no common sense RIP. No telling what he would have accomplished. Luckily we had Euler who being stuck in a cold palace in Russia with 13 kids, had no better option than becoming the all time Number One mathematician on the planet. He left behind 800 manuscripts, they are still in the process of transcribing them. But I am digressing...proceed.

In ancient Chinese philosophy (Laotzi), there is a metaphysical explanation of the universe: the Way give rise to 1, 1 to 2, 2 to 3, and 3 to everything. That line haunted me in my dreams till I learned about chaos, symmetry, the number i, and here I am.

Maybe I just don't have the right math experience to appreciate this presentation, but it seemed to me that Mr. Frenkel was describing things in an intentionally confusing or baffling manner. As far as I can discern, these groups are completely arbitrary and determined by humans, not floating around in the natural world waiting for us to write them down in the correct sequence. I really wanted to like this video, as I enjoy most of the content that WSF offers, but I just felt this particular video ventured off into abstract territory without any reason to do so.
