WTF are LUTS and how are they used?
Michael Cioni and Shane Hurlbut break this concept down. Look Up Tables have become the modern day skip bleach, ENR, and or OZ process. There are so many out there to choose from, but which are the most essential?
What do you think about LUTS?

Excellent broad stroke overview for my first dive into LUTS, when and how to use them. From here I can organize my research and apply it to my workflow. Outstanding, thank you!

I already know what LUTs are but I simply clicked coz of the title exuding the very energy Shane has: which is to make an informative video and call it "What the fuck are luts?" 😂😂

Where do I get Display LUTs from and know what Display LUT pertains exactly to me? Everyone seems to be putting Rec709 and Creative LUTs making it obviously not work for a novice.. does this go after you find the correct Display LUT? How do you make a CDL?

Most camera manufacturers have standard rec709 coversion LUTs for their flavours of LOG recorders. Either downloadable or I guess you can ask their support staff. CDLs would be dependent on each DI-suite so building those are more custom to each shot and software. At least that's my experience.

Barbara is not in a lederhosen. She is in a dirndl. The female bavaria lut for lederhosen. Both are traditional bavarian costume, but girls dont wear lederhosen. They wear dirndls. A hosen is a trouser. A dirndl is a skirt.

So in Resolve it goes from Node to Node to Node, etc. but in Premiere, how is this supposed to look like?

I ditched adobe except lightroom in favor of Resolve over a year ago. But in Premiere you can essentially add them as adjustment layers if you want it over the whole timeline. Or shorten them to parts of timelines. They have some LUT imports in the color essential tabs. But it was so broken, it would be ignored at rendering and was so buggy and ignored by developers that it was one of the many reasons I said "f*** this" and looked at the competitors. The Node system looks intimidating at first.. but man, I would not willingly go back to the haphazardly built systems of Adobe even though layers are easier to learn. In short. Layers are like being limited to only straight sequential node chains.

@@jmalmsten so Nodes are like Adjustment Layers?
@jmalmsten
@jmalmsten 3 года назад
In basic terms: In Resolve. Nodes are on the color tab. Adjustment layers are on the timeline. They are fundamentally different things. So I cannot put them on each side of an equals-sign. But adjustment layers have nodetrees just like any other clips. And those nodes are applied to all clips underneath the adjustment layer. So. If you put three adjustment layers on top of each other on the timeline. You are essentially telling resolve to add each adjustment layers nodetree on top of the former layers. So if you have one node in each layers nodetree. the result would be like having three sequential nodes (no fancy branching or anything. Just mediaIn>node>node>node>mediaOut). You can work like that... but you would be cheating yourself out of basically all the power that nodes have. One node can be basically any adjustment you do in the color page. And you can order them however you want. You can take output of one and route it to several other nodes. As long as they all terminate at the outpoint it doesn't matter what path it takes. You just have to make sure the color transformations are done in the order that suits the result. Not to mention the fact that you can not only have nodetrees on the clips. You can also group those clips however you want regardless of the order on the timeline. And those groups can be affected with separate nodetrees for both before the clips individual trees and after. And finally you have the timeline level of nodes. Which will affect the whole timeline. Added to that you have things like shared nodes that can be inserted in any of those trees which are their own node structures that can affect any nodetree at any point you want in the parent node structure. And you can see that you have a lot of options to use nodes. So. again. No. While you can use them in a similar manner. In a manner of speaking. But no... they are not the same. Again. In just that one example, yes, you can use the quirks of the system to get the same result with an adjustment layer. But it would be a mistake to consider them equals because of how and where they do their magic.

Great info, but the sound, the sound! Intro and outro music bitch slaps your ears red! People please remember to mix the audio.

This is quiet interesting. When I hear LUT, I just think, "paste a layer of colours."
