WTF Happened To This Movie? - The JoBlo series that looks at troubled productions, curious creative decisions, box-office failures, surprising successes, and cult favorites!
First appearing on Saturday Night Live shorts in 2007, Will Forte's dimwitted bomb-detonating special agent MACGRUBER certainly didn't seem like feature film material. But he proved popular enough to justify an R-rated 2010 movie... which completely flopped at the box office. And then, a cult following over the next decade somehow brought the character back to life for a streaming series. Time to pound some Cunth and find out "WTF Happened to MACGRUBER!"

5:48 The the "assembling the team" scene from this movie is PURE COMEDY GOLD, it's one of the best subversion of expectations ever done IMO XD

This movie is so underrated. I saw it in theaters opening day and me and my dad were the only ones in the entire audience, such a shame it didn’t get any attention in cinemas. I’m happy to know it’s gained a following over the past 10 years. The new tv show isn’t as good as the movie but it’s still nice to see MacGruber back again. Classic MacGrub’s.

I had a similar experience in the cinema. I was on tour and we had a day off, so the band went to see MacGruber. We were the only people in the room, and we laughed the entire time.

I remember going to the movies on a first date with a girl when this first came out not knowing what to see. There was absolutely nothing that interested us so we decided on macgruber knowing nothing about it. Had us laughing the whole way through was the best date ever lol. Loved will forte ever since.

This movie is such a guilty pleasure. Loved the van scene with the pro wrestlers, "There's no room in the back bud its filled with C4 I put in myself." The fact they got Val Kilmer as Cunth is amazing.

I think it bombed because most people agreed that there was not much more to the concept than the exploding guy. So people weren't waiting to finally see it when it came out, it would have to prove itself and grow by word of mouth and reviews. Unfortunately in the movie, it's hard to really know what they want it to be, is it spoofing Macgyver or is it spoofing Commando? On top of that, it wasn't a laugh riot one joke after the other... most of the jokes kept being re-treads of earlier jokes in the movie. (The sex scenes were hilarious though, instant classics, but not much else grabbed me.)

I saw this back then, not really familiar with Forte and Wiig or then-current SNL stuff and expecting an proper (Anchorman-like) McGyver spoof, which it wasn't. Didn't feel it at all, but over the years became a fan of both the actors, so i should really give it another shot.

I don't get why Macgruber tanked. It's not like it's a complicated premise. All the comedy works brilliantly. It got one of the biggest laughs out of me when the team blows up and Will's response kills me.

A spoof of the original IP was made into a theatrical film, even as the original series itself was never made into one (though two made-for-telly feature films were made in the 1990s, sans the iconic theme score). Such is the irony of and show business and life.

MACGRUBER's tone doesn't work for me. It's way more crass than it needs to be--and fine SNL style, it stretches the jokes beyond their enjoyment. I think the movie failed in the first place was people thought they were going to see a MacGyver spoof and it's not in keeping with the show or over the top action flicks of the 80's.

The sad fact is Hot Fuzz did a better job of spoofing action movies three years before, including the fact they had an ex James Bond in it sending himself up .Also this movie came across to me as a series of scenes patched together with no reason except to get next joke.. You could split them up and air them on TV over a number of weeks in any order and not lose he plot.

This is the best comedy that has ever existed. And the only comedy for years you could find for dollars in any Target or Walmart across North America. Even Canadian Walmarts.
