WTF Happened to Miami Vice? (1984-1989)

The eighties were an era of excess. The party never stopped, the music was awesome and the fashions - well, they were bold to say the least. No show ever as perfectly encapsulated its era as Miami: Vice, which merged the music and style of MTV with a hardcore police procedural, with none other than Michael Mann as its showrunner. It made icons out of its two stars, Don Johnson as Sonny Crockett and Philip Michael Thomas as Rico Tubbs, and ran for five seasons. Are all of them winners? No. Once Michael Mann left in season three, things got uneven, but as we'll show you in our latest installment of "Gone But Not Forgotten" - when this show was good it was great! So pop "In The Air Tonight" into the Spotify playlist, slip on some loafers and enjoy!

You mentioned Michael Mann as being the man that made "Miami Vice" what it is , which is definitely true. However, you left the legendary director who also made the show what it actually is. And that was the legendary filmmaker and T.V. director, Thomas Carter. He, along with Michael Mann, made MTV cops come to life. In fact, Mr. Thomas Carter was just as responsible for making "Miami Vice" the show it was when he directed the very first episode which was a TV movie.

When Don Johnson said when asked about if they could reboot this series, he thoughtfully said anything was possible, but this show was from a very specific time and place, and that would be hard to capture again. I remember living in the USSR. All foreign things were banned. Content was smuggled in randomly. Bits of taped television. I remember watching a single episode of Miami Vice with maybe 100 other people, on a small TV. We didn't know it was a TV show. We didn't have TV shows like that. The format itself was foreign to us. We had no idea what was happening and why, but we still watched. To us it was an exotic movie.

That's deep cool as fuck man :) mega style
@enilenis
@enilenis 3 месяца назад
@@jaybarnes6736 It was probably 1988 and I was 6 years old. A hotel on the Eastern Black Sea. In the lobby they had arcade type machines. They turned them off for the night, and whenever they were booted up first in the morning, they'd run one game for free. So us, kids, went to the lobby early each morning, for a chance to play everything, without spending money. Eventually I figured that we could just go around and secretly unplug the arcades and plug them back in, when security wasn't watching. But they caught us eventually. They had a regular small Russian television attached to the ceiling. And at night, sometimes adults would gather and watch something foreign. The room would be stuffed, with everyone watching that tiny little box. We watched Star Wars that way. It was titled "Episode 4", so we assumed it was actual part 4 of some film. Why would television lie to us? Even though I was young, and those things are distant, I have photographic memory, and to me, it is as if I am still there. Like no time has passed whatsoever. When memories do not degrade, time seems to stand still. It's hard to remember what was before and what was after. Everything feels like the present. And because of that, I'm nostalgic for the past. For the mysteriousness of existence. I miss the USSR, when the outside world was invisible, and one had to imagine it. Foreign films looked so different, compared to now, when I actually live in North America. I once remember an Eastern European friend tell me about ambulances here. He said that in his county, ambulances sounded differently, but since it was a cheap place to film, they often had foreign crews, making shows there, and they would use North American sirens. As a result, whenever he hears an ambulance over here, his mind is telling him that someone is shooting a movie nearby. I find that quite funny.

The show should absolutely come back. It should be more like the first couple seasons though. There is great nostalgia for '80s neon lights, style, music boats, etc. If this was brought back and done well it would be one of my favorite things on TV. As someone who lived through the '80s and was born in 79 you don't have a proper perspective to even judge a show like Miami Vice because you were not there. There is great nostalgia for that decade and the show could absolutely be a huge hit if it was done right. They could recapture everything great about the '80s and make a great cop show again but the trickiest part would probably be casting. It would have to be someone who reminds you of the original Miami Vice cast but would be new at the same time. If they had the right body language, style, wardrobe and direction it could be done right. It would be very tricky but I wouldn't doubt if this did happen sometime due to how much people still like Miami Vice.

Brandon Tartikoff renewed Remington Steele in 1986. Meaning Pierce Brosnan could not sign on to play James Bond in The Living Daylights thus paving the way for Timothy Dalton...actually that was a good thing. Bronsan was not a victim of the six year hiatus and I got my favourite portrayal of Bond.

This show was what I called a ‘down by law’ phenomenon amongst my generation. We ALL watched Miami Vice. The show changed television and influenced everything from men’s clothing trends to what music was popular at the time. And it was also a wonderful starting point for some of our most popular and talented actors. Julia Roberts , Kyra Sedgwick, Stanley Tucci, Wesley Snipes, Laurence Fishburne and Helena Bonham Carter were just a few of the actors who got their starts on the show. And if you all still want to get your Vice fix check out STARZ Encore Action at 11:00 p.m. Monday through Friday and there are NO commercials!

The question isn’t “Should Miami Vice come back” it should be How can we bring Miami Vice back for the 21st century. I believe it’s doable, but it would require some seriously good writing and stylistic direction.

I never looked at it that way, but that Wolf does like to howl, and line producer for the show was his final stop before "Law & Order". Lots of "Ripped from the Headlines" stuff on Vice, so Wolf really made his presence felt, but he wasn't the Mann.

stylistically. technically. unofficially. MIAMI VICE lasted (the first) two seasons, bookend by the Calderone saga with the masterpiece pilot and the devastatingly heartbreaking finale Sons and Lovers.
@gluserty
@gluserty 3 года назад
@@SIKE01 For sure, as Season 3 had a completely different feel all the way around. Even going back and watching the series multiple times, 'Sons and Lovers' to me feels like an ending (even with Tubbs reading Calderone's "I'll be back!" at the cemetery; a certain kind of irony there). I'm not saying that's bad though, in retrospect I'm glad the show tried to go a different way, as the series was all about breaking new ground. I think Season 3 has the best stories, but I also feel the tone is a bit clinical & detached, like the material & presentation is a bit cold around the heart and at arm's length. So I'm glad that the entire series isn't that way, but for a season (I admit that Season 4 has a problem with TOO MANY tones) I like it.

I remember watching this before most TV's were manufactured with Stereo audio, The local FM station would synchronize the broadcast (simulcast) with the episode on TV but in Stereo with vastly greater frequency and dynamic range. So you could crank up your equipment and hear this show in a way I'd never heard it before. Michael Mann seems to care about sound design a fair bit too, especially the downtown LA gun battle in Heat.

Miami Vice is a genre defining tv classic that is a time capsule of the 1980's, and would not have worked beyond that era. The first 2 seasons are classic Vice but since Micheal Mann & composer Jan Hammer left midway in Season 3 the show took on a different tone. With the incoming new composer Tim Truman and producer Dick Wolf, the remaining seasons lost the pastels of the first 2 seasons and became more of the template for Wolf's later successful long running Law & Order franchise. That's not to say the episodes were weak, but they were a mixed batch i certainly liked the 3 parter Mirror Image, Hostile Takeover and Redemption in Blood. But for me the show's best episodes are from season 2 with the likes of Out where the buses don't run, Payback & Finale Sons & Lovers being among the best of the bunch. I never really saw this show during it's original run, bar the odd episode, as at that time I watched more of Knight Rider, The A Team, Macgyver, LA Law and Airwolf but I did catch up on the show on DVD in the early 2000's. One thing I noticed that nobody ever comments on is how the show seems to recycle character names like Guitteraz, Guzman and Montoya several times sometimes even being mentioned in different episodes within the same season. The show really couldn't be remade as it is a product of it's time and even Mann himself failed to kickstart to what was supposed to be the start of a film franchise with the edgy 2006 film ( which owed more to Manns films Heat & Collateral than it did the original Miami Vice). The film had a really cool line which sums it up really well "Do you understand the meaning of the word foreboding, it means badness is happening right now."

Missed a huge element to the undercover work. Tubbs was the "dealer", Crocket was the "smuggler" when it came to working their way into the criminal elements. As such, Crocket kept the "persona" up as a smuggler even OUT of the office in order to keep his cover going for as long as possible. That is why the show really works. Even when not "on the job", Crocket and Tubbs still maintained a sort of "ongoing undercover" lifestyle that constantly provided additional material to work with.

Hey, Joblo; Great job, here. You might have mentioned the "Smugglers Blues" episodes co-starring the late great Glen Frey of The Eagles. He wasn't a very good actor, but it was kinda cool seeing him mix it up with Crockett and Tubbs. He also wrote the title theme music for the 2 episodes. It's a fact that the sale of home VCR's went through the roof when Miami Vice was up against the mighty "Dallas" in the same time slot. You could watch Dallas, and record Miami Vice, and have it for Desert! I sure did. It was a Friday ritual in my home! **** Suggestion; How about a "WTF Happened to Crime Story?", another great but forgotten show from the 80's? It was also produced by Michael Mann. I actually liked Crime Story a little better than MV. Some folks agree with me, too. Thanks for all of your hard work! You content is first rate, and extremely enjoyable!
