Yeah, I got canceled from Reddit. That's how bad LA is. I'll never live in LA again until it gets cleaned up.

I lived in LA for 10 years and left a year ago for Florida, there was an attempted break-in when my pregnant wife was home alone in the middle of the day. The cops did nothing and took 45 minutes to get there. (three blocks from the police station) We left almost immediately. We both work in the film industry but it just wasn't worth it anymore. The gaslighting of the city saying the crime was going down when you can see it on the streets every day is absolutely insane.

It's not just Santa Monica, it's all of Los Angeles. Check out all the malls and lively pockets we used to have. Our malls are emptying out, the homeless crisis has EXPLODED to the point that downtown LA has more homeless roaming the streets than residents living in the luxury apartments they beg, scream, and yell in front of. The Walk of Stars in Hollywood is now effectively the Walk of Drugs and Piss (the smell is inescapable). Rodeo Drive, a street infamous for designer stores, has AT LEAST half of their buildings vacant and boarded up for lease. Again, the malls are emptying out and businesses are leaving with no intention of coming back and no prospective replacements, along with many production companies (with multi million dollar filming projects, movies, television shows, ect) moving out of the state because of more attractive tax benefits in places like Atlanta, Texas, and Nevada (among others). California is on borrowed time. People still think we're some cool city to be at and our reputation is ahead of our current state of affairs, but it's catching up. Videos like this are bringing awareness to the reality of our situation. It's sad, so much potential being wasted. So many resources being mismanaged. So many good people and lucrative businesses run off. Just heartbreaking as a native whose watched up close the decline year by year.
Santa Monica and Venice have always had a crime problem. 20 years ago I used to take classes in Santa Monica and almost every time I walked back to my car some beggar would follow me asking for spare change. It was so bad I would always carry change in my front pocket so I didn't have to slow down when paying them to go away. The nicer areas in the rest of the city are not that bad.

Santa Monica was the spot back in the late 90’s-early 2000’s… My girlfriend and I used to go there often. The pier, the mall, The Promenade, we used to spend the entire day hanging around Santa Monica and it was booming back then. What a shame to see how much it has declined. It is truly heartbreaking…

Back in the day it was crowded by people who were enjoying the street performances, the shops, and getting their faces drawn by street artists. I was in total shock when I found out that The Promenade was full of homeless people and drug addicts. I couldn't believe it when I saw all of the empty shops. It honestly broke my heart because I have so many great memories of that place.

I think it was simply called third Street records. I could get the most fantastic rare records there- lots of Depeche Mode imports. Yeah, it was really amazing . The problem isn't Republican or Democrat it's the rich and powerful, they take everything like a vacuum cleaner and leave the scraps for the rest of us. Living in AZ, we always go to Santa Monica for a quick getaway. We will no longer return to Cal. after seeing how the country has been destroyed. The cost for just one scoop of ice cream is $15 is way too much the homeless, the drugs, and the dirty streets are too much. Cal no longer feels safe nor can you afford to visit with the cost of food and hotel. I will take my vacation someplace else.
The video never said the stores are scared to tell their stories on camera. It said the stores don’t want to file a police report over the break ins because there’s not much the police can do about them unless they have clear video footage of the suspects and they worry that their insurance rates will go up if they report these things to the police.

I lived in Cali 10 years ago. I lived it. I meet my girl friend back in Florida. I was so excited to take her to California for vacation. We got to Santa Monica and it TOTALLY changed. I was so embarrassed because i kept saying how great it was.
I stayed a night in Santa Monica in 2021 and honestly it felt somewhat normal compared to LA and Hollywood. But for real I don’t get how the politicians actively encouraged this.

I moved to Santa Monica from Brooklyn in 1970, when the population was 10,000. Slept on the beach at night, didn't lock my door, hitchhiked to work in West Hollywood, enjoyed it all without fear of any kind. Living overseas in a small town I have that again now. I am English, and in 1979 I fulfilled a lifetime ambition and visited the country I had long admired from afar as I grew up. I travelled from New York to Los Angeles via the southern states. I experienced many incredible and unforgettable places, however one destination that made an impression on me was Santa Monica. I fell in love with the city. We stayed in a beautiful hotel on Pico Boulevard, just a ten minute walk from the pier and that beautiful little park overlooking the beach. We loved the shops and the restaurants, and a highlight was seeing Frank Sinatra in concert at the Civic Auditorium. Watching your excellent video was heartbreaking, especially when I still have so many vivid memories and wonderful photos of Santa Monica of how it used to be.

The state was headed for ruination in 1973 when I left. Each time I return for a visit the situation just gets worse. My last visit was in 2017 and it was bad then but worse now. Sadly, no one wants to make the tough decisions. Mentally ill and drug addicted people should not be roaming the streets but the majority of voters think mental institutions are inhumane.
This is why gatekeeping is actually extremely important and should not be looked down upon. I’ve seen my favorite cities, movies, comic books, and TV shows fall to activist newcomers that apparently couldn’t see the beauty in the city or storyline in its original form.

Literally went to go visit a home here the other day. It was listed at $15 million within the first three minutes of walking through the home. I saw a massive bay windows that looked out over the beach for an absolutely breathtaking view. Until 10 seconds later when I look down to the sidewalk, crossing in front of the home and saw a massive homeless encampment lining the entire front of the house. Who the hell would ever spend $15 million for a house just to buy a view of homeless drug addicts?

Lived in Santa Monica for two years. My husband is from there. I’m from a small town of 2800 people. I’ve lived in cities all my adult life, STL, Chicago, now Miami, but Santa Monica had some real problems. A shooting a couple blocks from our apartment while we were walking our dogs. A homeless woman was punching a walk sign repeatedly while staring at me and I backed up. Truly believe she was about to punch me. Went to the gas station and a guy was pleasuring himself, naked homeless people at the beach, and taking a piss out in public while talking to themselves, got our electric bikes stolen and my neighbors car, we tracked it and it was obvious who it was, there were plenty of cameras in the area, the police did nothing because they said they didn’t want to “make any assumptions.”

As a teenager, I remember riding my bicycle 😢to Santa Monica along the boardwalk - bike - skate trail back in the mid 1970’s. It was so cool and relaxed back then. There was some crime back then , and a drug problems, but NO homeless. Poor Santa Monica. I feel sorry for all of the honest inhabitants there . 🙏
I started at UCLA in 1999 and by then the homeless were everywhere in Santa Monica. Always cracked me up seeing that park on Ocean Ave in commercials and on TV shows because in real life that place was always completely taken over by homeless 100% of the time I drove by there or walked by there.
I remember homeless in Santa Monica in the late 70s and 80s (I grew up there, lived near 14th and Ocean Park), but they weren't as many, and they were often out of sight.
Places Lake Santa Monica are great for homeless because the weather is so nice and the government pays a stipend to be homeless there just like in manhattan.
I was born in 1987. I miss the good old days with all the smiles and laughs. We used to have a word that I feel no longer exists. It's called being neighborly.

Yep because they never learn and are incapable of admitting fault. Always blame someone or something else and continue right on doing what didn't work before. Human ignorance at its finest.
I mean obviously California has problems. But what would you do if they were as "tough on crime" as Republican states? You do realize that this does not actually help the people but rather it shifts the problem somewhere else (hint: within the United States). So what are your actual solutions instead of populist chants? Hard on crime, lock them up etc. All been tried and failed. What's the difference between the US and European countries or Asian countries who are less tough on drugs and crime but it's still not as bad? What's the real reason? Try to think a few steps further. Simple solutions to complex processes rarely exist and have often exacerbated problems.
I’m an Englishman who first came to the west coast of CA in 2004. It was beautiful, affluent and exciting. I returned to show my wife the area in 2023. I thought I’d flown to the wrong country. A total sh*thole. Homeless folk everywhere, aggressive nut jobs shouting at passers by (like in your video), crime, empty buildings, ludicrous expense and a general feeling of unease. The only thing left was the nice weather. However, England is just the same. Our towns and cities are now a cesspool of immigration, drugs, crime and closed businesses. And yet our western governments continue to promote the “success “ of multiculturalism. It beggars belief.
@@welshhibbyup to a point is is but this isn't diversity. Diversity is something low-key like seeing the occasional ethnic restaurant. This is discord and conflict. The fabric of society is unraveling because completely incompatible people are living in close proximity and the government doesn't have the guts to universally and equally apply the same laws to everyone.
I lived in London in the late 80's. I remember sitting at a pub being lectured by a university professor and his wife about how the UK and Europe had no problem with immigration of foreign peoples and that it was only "racist" Yanks that had an issue with it. They also opined that's Yank soldiers in WWII had brought racism to the UK and that was it was imported American racism that had caused problems in London and Brixton. My family is from Scotland and immigrated to the US/New York in the 1920's and I sat there as they lectured me about how the UK was a much better place bc of immigration. I asked if they had been to New York City and they said, "No". I said, "You should go and take the subway (tube) uptown, there are some folks there who would love to hear your thoughts."
There are enough Californian policies protecting the bad people and punishing the hard-working people to make a huge difference like this. The incentives are all wrong. This is not happening only in Santa Monica. Everywhere you see this happening, pay attention to the correlation and patterns. It's not a coincidence.
It's Anarcho Terrorism, a term coined by the late Sam Francis over 30 years ago. Tax, and fine and regulate the good people into submission while making it much easier for street thugs to get away with felony crime. Most finally see this now, but they were blind when it might've been derailed 30 years ago. It's only going to get worse.
It was orchestrated during Covid, helped along by all the little lemmings that no longer cook and get all their food delivered. We are being separated - physically - so that we keep separated in our hearts. Now, the landowners have effed the rest of us. We can't own businesses any more because we can't pay the jacked-up rent.

I was born in Santa Monica (SM) in 1956. It was truly a paradise. My father had a service station on Ocean and Santa Monica across from the park, bluff, beach and Pacific Ocean. Nothing but fond memories. The SM of today is unrecognizable to what I remember. But to be fair, nothing about California is recognizable and I have lived here my whole life! Thanks to the Democrat entrenched culture and idiot electorate that supported Prop 47 that gave us the "steal just less than $950 and it is effectively a parking ticket if you are even cited at all." And that is not per day! It is per event...every different store is a different "event". Do that math - if you are a criminal your can steal thousands and basically pay a few tickets. We in California cater to the criminals and illegal people and penalize the law-abiding. Just try to defend yourself with a gun and see what happens next: the victim (you) becomes the criminal and the poor criminal becomes the victim. Up is down, left is right, inside out and backwards - welcome to the dystopian world that is today's Democrat driven California!

Democrats….thats what happened to Santa Monica and sadly, most cities in America. I’m an airline pilot and routinely stay in downtown hotels all over the country. It’s an absolute tragedy what’s happened because of an ideology that values “equity” over ethics, honesty, and accountability. That values “diversity” of skin color or sexual proclivities over diversity of thought. That values “inclusion” of whatever perverse lifestyle people choose, but not people with different political views. Well, that is my perspective for what it’s worth… God Bless us all.
I live in Santa Monica and this video is 100% accurate- witnessed an incident earlier today where a homeless person came into a coffee shop and grabbed someone’s bottle of water they had paid for….
I was there in 2017. It was really nice to walk in the area so I consider move there, buy house and start a family. After this video and now I’m a mother. I wouldn’t want to put my kid to this kind of area.
BIL is an officer there. Last year he arrested the same guy 3x in the SAME day. Crime goes unpunished, so then they are less likely to hurry to make an arrest - knowing it will be thrown out.
Why are we putting up with this? Criminals that are illegals, after being arrested, are pleading guilty with request for deportation and then come right back in under different identity
What Graham assumes you know is that Santa Monica used to be one of the most beautiful, walkable cities on the planet. Anytime you see movies about LA, you will see shots of the beach or the promenade. To be honest for the past 50 years, it’s only been for rich people, but it was a super welcoming environment for tourists. That’s all gone now.

What used to be normal and right is now weird and wrong and vise versa. We left LA in Feb of 2004 for Oregon and never looked back. The CA governor must be "proud" of how CA has become due to all the insane laws passed.
I went to LA & SF last november, I have never seen so many homeless and drug users in public in all my life. It's honestly insane, I can't believe how the locals put up with it.
those are the locals that were priced out by corporations, statically around 85% of homeless ppl in CA are natives. the issue is the price of everything, business are empty because ppl don't have money to buy.
I went there and saw it first hand, homeless and drug abusers all over and also commented on a similar post recently and locals were telling me the place is beautiful and my presence there is whats making it bad… crazy how deluded these Cali folks are lol
@@mrchun4018 maybe just the people you know. most of us are not delusional. but when celebrities own our local government and don't pay their share of taxes, you can see what has happened to the state over a period of decades. many of us want change. and most of the guns that come into california are from red states and contribute to the violence.
As a European tourist I find it very interesting to come visit L.A. and see a place that has actually become like some dystopian movies in the 80s/90s (Mad Max, Blade Runner,..)
I was there with my daughter a month ago. We had a good time but stayed in Altadena which was a lot more comfortable. We went to Santa Monica for a day on the beach and further down the beach was good but the pier was a dump. I wouldn’t venture to the town side.
I lived at S.M. in the begging of the 90s. Coming from Israel I remember being asked by the locals about the safety situation etc back home. Then the Rodney King riots broke, people were dragged out of there cars and got beaten, stores windows were smashe, loothing everywhere, and we eventualy went under a 5 days curfiew. It was scarry as hell. There was so much hatred beneath the surface.
I grew up in So Cal in the '80's. It was wonderful. It was safe, patriotic and had a real sense of community. It's heartbreaking to see it dissolving into a 3rd world country.
I'm 70+ years. Santa Monica was rustic. No one camping on the beach and no lack of salt air. Our community changed and the vigilantes don't see straight as gangs take over...government is corrupt and incompetent.
Was in Santa Monica just last year. In the matter of two days I was yelled at, cussed at, and someone tried to fight me. Yeah, the situation is awful. California’s laws and harm reduction philosophy is simply not working. They need a new approach to help those experiencing chronic homelessness, mental health, and substance abuse. I recommend voting the Governor out of office - that’s a start!
There are just too many people in California, of course it is hard to control. One out of eight American citizens live here, 40 million. California has more people in jail/prison than any other state except Texas. At one point California stopped building schools and started building more prisons. We found that we couldn't stop crime by building prisons. If we could only give half of our population (20 million or so) to the other 49 states, we would be doing a lot better crime wise. California still doesn't even make the list of top ten per capita murder states. Seven of those states are red states.
you all don't know this is a long term attempt to bring down house prices. No one wants to rent commercial here.... so rent will keep decreasing. This is disinflationary !
@@lesterparker1594Idealy we would have a moritorium on people from C--A from moving into our states and then voting in the next election. A 10 year wait to vote once they move would fix a lot of things. As everyone calls them here, they are refugees not residents.

There's hundreds of thousands of square miles in California where this isn't happening. And I thank God every day that I am from the forgotten part of the state where I can see for a hundred miles and see nothing but farms and ranches, foothills and mountains.
@@suki.1313 far north of Excremento and the Gray Area by a hundred miles plus, all the way up to Mt. Shasta to the Oregon border. Once you're north of the Yuba City/Marysville area, above the 39th Parallel you've entered into the Great State of Jefferson as far as we're concerned. Excremento still fucks with us a little, but it takes a lot to actually get a bureaucratic policy wonk to get out from behind their desks and drive all the way up here into the middle of nowhere. Instead they like to send official-sounding, threatening letters to comply with their nonsensical regulations. 😉👍🏼

As a tourist, I visited Santa Monica back in May this year. As soon as I got off the bus, I could see so many homeless and then I started to walk up the promenade and was shouted out and followed by a homeless guy. I ended up escaping into a store. Then managed walk to the pier and there was homeless and a few shady guys at the entrance. Just did not feel safe and headed back to my hotel.
Sorry to say, as a foreigner watching from another country, it looks like it's turning into Sacramento there. On our way to the motel after exiting the freeway I started to notice the couple of homeless people pushing shopping carts became much more frequent, I counted 18 on the street where we were meant to stay, called motel to say we wouldn't be staying but to keep the payment, fueled the car, got cans of Red Bull and continued to Lake Tahoe without stopping.

Being someone who has lived all over LA, whats hilarious or horrible is that Santa Monica isn't even the worst. Sketchy everywhere. I moved and can now leave my car unlocked without fear of being broken in the morning. Its all I talk about when looking back at my time in LA. The city is washed up and is going through a really dark time. No need to live there anymore.
In LA you can leave your car unlocked, in fact that is highly suggested to do there. If you don't, you are likely to have to replace a window. They are going to get into your car either way, but one of those ways they don't break your window in the process.
Wow, I'm so saddened and in disbelief!! I used to be a 3rd Street Promenade busker (celtic fiddler) in my early 20's. I'd hang with other buskers around my age and we'd perform together on the Promenade and run around town going to each other's shows and learning the ins and outs of building an independent music career. We were young and free-spirited and thrilled to be part of that vibrant, dynamic setting! Drum circles on the beach; getting amusing tarot readings in crystal shops; street food at the Pier; buying funky sunglasses at that Urban Outfitters from the video; playing music in the early evening breeze surrounded by onlookers seated in outdoor cafés or strolling by appreciatively. The streets were buzzing with life and interesting characters. I loved watching the other street performers as much as I loved being one. So much world-class talent and artistry there! I even purchased my new fiddle there from another fellow busker. I went to a cafe for lunch and got it out admiringly. Everyone in the cafe fawned over it and the server came over and said quietly "Another customer took care of your bill. Enjoy your new violin." That's my violin to this day. So many endless memories of being a young musician in the heart of beautiful Southern California city. I've busked all over the world and in other major cities, but there was no comparison to my Santa Monica days. In my mind the city lived on like that, forever young and vibrant. Feels like I've lost a friend learning about this now! 💔😔
