WTF Happened to SOUTHLAND TALES (2006)?

Richard Kelly’s SOUTHLAND TALES had one of the most disastrous film festival premieres on record. Going into the 2006 Cannes Film Festival, everyone figured it would be a masterpiece, as the expectations set by the director’s previous film, DONNIE DARKO, were sky-high. Instead, critics absolutely savaged the film, resulting in a recut and a VFX overhaul that Kelly maintains actually improved the film. Initially a Universal release, the film was sold off to Sony, who opened it in just 63 theatres through their Destination Films label and Samuel Goldwyn Films. If they saw it at all, most people saw it on DVD.
Years later, it’s achieved cult status, thanks to Kelly’s uncompromising vision and memorably eccentric performances by Dwayne Johnson, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Seann William Scott and Justin Timberlake. Yet, the film has gone down as a flop, and Kelly has only made one other film in the sixteen years since its release. So join us as we take a look at WTF Happened to SOUTHLAND TALES?

I can’t explain and I don’t know why, but I love this glorious train wreck of a movie. I read the three graphic novels before seeing the movie and even though it’s all over the place, I still got the gist of the story that Richard Kelly was trying to tell. That being said, it most definitely isn’t for everybody.

Yeah it's weird how well Philip K Dick movies get received when this one fits right up that ally. Like Scanner Darkly and Minority Report. Yeah some bits are corny and funny but it's meant to be. The movie knows it's ridiculous. The weirdest thing is that a lot of it has come true. The whole influencers/moviestars/pornstars over attention and the surveillance. It's felt to stupid back then and not stupid enough now. I too love this movie and I hope he gets to make that director's cut. I never really liked Donny Darko until I saw the director's cut so this can only get better.

Southland Tales is one of only a few films that is simultaneously a mess and a masterpiece. From a narrative and pacing standpoint the film is infuriating and at times nonsensical and yet from a cinematic and thematic standpoint it’s both stunning and unlike anything else out there. It’s an absolutely confounding work, even as someone who considers Donnie Darko one of his all time favourites and yet since watching it a couple years ago, the film has never left my mind. There really is nothing like it and only the recent Under the Silver Lake comes close to the dizzying, hypnotic feeling that this film gives. I seriously hope that Kelly gets the chance to finally finish this narrative as a Netflix mini series or something but honestly I don’t the stars would align for it again. Still Richard Kelly is one of the most misunderstood and under appreciated directors out there. His narrative voice is so distinct and if he’d have come up around the time of A24 and the indie rise, he’d be a far more celebrated name.

The fact that they used mostly comedians and aspiring actors from different backgrounds like wrestling and music gives this movie such a weird, Lynchian vibe. I agree 100% Such a unique encapsulation of the Y2K/post 911 era with the choice of music, setting and actors. It's even a clever satirization of the culture of that era, which I don't think I've seen before. At least to this extent. It makes sense it would become a cult classic in recent years with its prophetic nature and our obsession with millennial/post millennial nostalgia

When I say it's strange and fascinating, it's not to say it was bad - I think it's interesting. I'm glad it's gotten a cult following because it deserves one. When you put your mind on paper maybe you lose something. Richard Kelly is still trying to find that and that's an inspiration.

Only ever saw it once, and that was back then. I found it a pretty exhausting experience as opposed to Donnie Darko. That movie was complex, hard to fully grasp on first viewing - but you were invested anyway because you cared for the characters and the situations they were in were relatable. However, with Southland Tales you were treated with an abundance of shrill caricatures in borderline unfollowable subplots and I just couldn't be bothered. Also I found it visually unappealing. But well, might be worth revisiting after all this time. I'll see.

His movies were directed for the audience of 1980’s and early 1990’s. Unfortunately people after 9/11 and especially after releasing an iPhone got too dumb to follow his narrative or understand all nuances. I know this movie's an absolute mess, but I really love it, and think it's underappreciated. It's extraordinarily visionary, both in terms of the political/technological themes at work at the time, and presaging the future. I also like that it's a weird, obtuse film that forces you to think about it - and it looks great. Feels like a double standard that David Lynch gets heaped with praise for traits which, personally, I thought Richard Kelly executed better and with more substance.

It's great that you're covering this! The whole thing is a tribute to the work of Philip K. Dick: crazy situations, everyone on edge for reasons they can't really explain, and no one really clear on just what reality is. It's too bad that Kelly wrote Part 1 of the movie's narrative as a graphic novel; the movie begins with (if I remember correctly) a big Roman numeral '2'. This is not a good way to win over an audience.

Jay Mohr of all people talked about working with Cameron Crowe Vs Doug Liman and how on a Cameron Crowe movie you feel like you’re in a floodlight of focus but with Liman it’s a laser of focus and if you’re off to the side of that laser you’re just looking at a madman.

A couple hours later, he got back home, walked thru the room and looked at the tv and asked "are you still watching that same weird movie?" I answered yes, and then he asked "so, what's it about". It's a lot easier to understand if you read the first three chapters prior to watching the film.

As wildly bad as this movie is, I do give it props for trying. I worked at a convenience store at the time and actually knew one of the little people that was in the film (the blonde guy at USIDENT and also the small SWAT guy during the anarchist raid). He said it was a blast even though the movie sucked in the end. I guess I feel that way with the movie I was in in regards to The Postman. I do appreciate the fact he tried going multi level marketing with a really interesting website and graphic novel series.

I remember watching this. Like Donnie Darko, which was drastically cut down and edited, I wonder if it could have been saved by outside help. I recall the Justin Timberlake singing sequence was awesome and also the Ice Cream Van sequence was an amazing spectacle. It wasn't total shit, it was just really muddled and convoluted.

I've seen this movie over a dozen times including when it's in theatrical debut and I can honestly say I still have absolutely no idea what this film about

Its a mess but not a bad mess. Would it work better as a mini series if there was a longer cut? Given the range of ideas I suspect it would and in today's market there would be the space for it to work.

This movie i really hated at first but after doing some research and reading into the backstory and all the shit Richard Kelly had released surrounding the movie made me go back and give it another try and while i still don't love and absolutely can't blame anyone for hating it i really feel there actually was a good movie somewhere amongst all the shit he came up with..he just really needed a editor and someone to check his ass..i have no idea why he was ever considered anything near a genius for doing pretty much just one good movie in Donnie Darko... I did the homework to try to make sense of this but Richard Kelly is crazy as hell to think anyone would want to think this damn hard ..Thanx for the video as always great man

This movie fucking rules and defies all logical analysis or explanation. The graphic novel included on the 2008 bluray definitely helps a lot

First I want to say that people who hated this film I completely understand the movie has a lot of storylines going all over the place. There are some movie that messiness doesn't work (looking at you The Bonfire of the Vanities) but messiness work for me in this movie and I liked the movie, this movie was ahead of it time. This is one of those movie for people that think outside of the box (no pun intended) or don't trust what society or the government this movie is for you. I think that Kelly should remake this movie as a limited TV show or a series on HBO or streaming service because this movie has a lot to say and TV right now is the perfect medium. I hope he read this and he would think about it.

A person I was dating got me to watch the film, I was very drunk and high at the time and I remember thinking, "This is pretty good!" but having seen it sober, no, no it is not. I don't mind weird films but it was needlessly long and whatever vision the director had was not fully formed in the final piece. They aren't going to make a sequel or even a show of this. It's not Donnie Darko level of cult fandom and never will be.

Doesn't Dwayne Johnson own his own Producing company with his ex wife? Why doesn't he just give the guy a call, he has millions upon millions! Although, he would have to put a Jungle in it, we know how much Dwayne likes Jungles.
