WTF Happened to The Beastmaster?

Back in the 1980s, sword and sorcery films seem to be a go-to genre. Roger Corman himself made a handful of them as all you needed was some open spaces, a strapping hero in a leather loincloth, and preferably some buxom beauties who were in some sort of trouble, probably from some sort of evil wizard. One person who saw a great opportunity to make a fantasy epic was probably not the first one to come to mind.
After making a couple of family-friendly films, Don Coscarelli burst onto the scene with his horror film Phantasm. This fever dream of a film caught the imagination of audiences everywhere as the Tall Man began to haunt their dreams. More importantly, film executives were paying attention to how well the film had done. Coscarelli now could line up his next film. He wanted to create a fantasy film about a hero who could talk to animals. The Beastmaster was about to be born. When it came time to actually film the movie, Coscarelli would soon find that the real horror of his life may be bringing this film to life. So let's find out what exactly happened to The Beastmaster here on WTF Happened To This Movie.

If it's ok to share Cool memories of our Dads, I was 7 years old and was "the wolf" in the little red riding hood school play. They needed an axe for the woodsman and they were going to make one out of toilet roll tubes and cardboard. My dad said he would make one at work. He didn't, he got the apprentice to, and made one with a full wooden handle and a wooden head that was painted gloss black with a silver bladed edge, and the handle was varnished. It looked like the real article. If you'd have seen the teachers freaking out as I walked into the school passed their particular class rooms with it over my shoulder. It was hilarious. They didn't see my mum behind me walking into the school. They just saw a seven year old casually carrying an axe into school

I love this movie. My favorite part is how much it's structured like a video game. Every time I watch it, the video game beats and mechanics jump out to me. It has mini bosses, plus a huge last boss at the end. Why someone hasn't made this a killer game baffles me.

A couple of us participated in a game jam, and the theme COMPANION give us the idea of making a Beastmaster type game, we named it Beastmaster - The Alliance. The game was about choosing some animal / beast / monster companion at every leveling up, and defeat enemies in a beat them up style. It wasn't much, made in 2 days, I made the art. :) cdna.artstation.com/p/assets/images/images/060/597/498/large/laszlo-eszik-title.jpg?1678907834 cdnb.artstation.com/p/assets/images/images/060/595/727/large/laszlo-eszik-beastmaster.jpg?1678905372

I have a friend of mine who says the same about quite a few movies from that time period. Movies like Rambo 2 and such. When he describe it, its always as a compliment. I've come to realize that these games starting with the NES took note from these movies and tried to mimic them in gameplay. Its a structure that continues into modern video games today. As for a Beastmaster video game, I definitely wouldn't say no to it. Sword and Sorcery is one of my favorite genres and games like Conan Exiles are some of my favorite. I've seen many games try a beastmaster concept, but never actually focused the entire game around it. So a Beastmaster game where the animals you use give different abilities and mechanics would be quite fun to play.

This was in my top 3 movies of this type growing up. It sat at a comfortable #2, just under Conan The Barbarian and just above Krull. The Beastmaster had everything. It had a really good antagonist with Rip Torn. It had a really good bad group, with the horde. It has one of the most terrifying bad creations with the monsters created with the slugs in the ear. And those are just trumped by the more terrifying creatures with wings that will turn people into soup and bones. The protagonist was awesome. What kid didn't day dream about being able to talk to animals? The love interest was pretty damn hot and the side kicks, both human and animal, were great. Unfortunately it didn't age very well. The audio is really bad and the acting is pretty cheesy. But as a kid, this movie was incredible. As far as the sequels? I treat this movie almost like I do the Alien series. There's Alien 1 and 2. And it stops there. Except the Beastmaster, I stop at the first movie. Nothing after is worth watching.

Didn’t realize it until now, but I kind of lived out my Beastmaster fantasy. At one point, I was given a pair of ferrets from a co-worker whose new wife didn’t want them. At another, I volunteered at a big cat sanctuary and got to interact with over 60 of them. And one of my ultimate dreams, I did falconry. My highlight during that time was that I got to hunt with a golden eagle. I’ve always had a fascination and love for animals, and even did a few short animal documentaries on my channel. Lately, I decided to sort of spin that off to another channel that’s in the works. Some passions will always live on I guess… Oh and like the film, it seems like I’m always faced with budget cuts. 😋 It will be interesting to see if the franchise can be given new life since the creator has the rights back. Working with animals is always challenging, but I hope that with the advancements in technology a balance can be struck with utilizing the tech and still being able to have live animals utilized.

My credit on Beastmaster was Asst. Production Designer. I designed all the sets that were on the Van Nuys warehouse "sound stage". (Tunnels, pods forest, dungeon, etc.) William Strom designed all the Semi-Valley location village sets and pyramid human sacrifice set. The wide shot of the village on the hill across from Marc Singer's (Dar) was a forced perspective miniature about 20 ft ahead of Marc's point of view. It was so real looking that when you were standing in front of it, it STILL looked like it was on the hill across the valley! It was John Alcott's last picture before he passed away. He did not use a light meter to check the F-stop for the camera, he used an old Polaroid black & white camera. If It look right, that was what they set for the camera. He was amazing to watch. As you may know, if you dim a stage light's voltage, it changes the color temperature to a warmer fire light or candle light look. I watch him use a flash light while walking just out of frame with Marc so that his face could be seen on film moving in the dark. The reason I am taking the time to write is because it was a wonderful time to be working on films like this with people like Mr. Alcott. (He won an Oscar for Barry Lyndon)That time of miniatures instead of CGI today, practical locations instead of stage blue screen and so on. I wish there were more You Tube videos for young people to learn how films were made in the golden era of "Hollywood". You can still use your talent and ingenuity and inexpensive 4K cameras to make films that look like you spent millions to do so. Sadly, a lot of that talent on Beastmaster and others like it have passed on, with only a few of us sharing the stories of behind the scenes. Marc was a great guy to be around. I am glad he is still with us.

Never knew it was overshadowed by Conan...Funny thing is, BeastMaster & Conan, those two were my favorite Fantasy sword fighting movies of all times as a kid in the 80s...They'll never be forgotten.

I was a big fan of Andre Norton and loved her book The Beastmaster, so when I saw this film in the cinema, I was amazed she didn't get a credit because it totally ripped off her characters. No internet back then so I'd always wondered what the story behind that was.

I kind of hope they don't make a re-boot of the BeastMaster. To me the film is perfect. The little flaws are due to what was avelible at the time and it is perfect. I think some people may disagree but it is due to the BeastMaster cable stations got multiple views. People would see the Beastmaster was on sit, to watch and see what else the cable companies were playing. It was eye candy to lour viewers and it worked.

A very memorable film from childhood. I was 12 or 13 at the time. We thought , ah , cool. What a great movie. It appealed to us because the movie portrayed a time and place away from the complexities of civilization . It showed a simple and idealistic life in which a person defends himself with a sword. Even at that time it was a bit obvious that the movie was slightly low budget. Us children had already been spoiled by better quality films such as star wars. Yet we found the movie very appealing . A few years later of course, there was Conan, a higher budget movie of the same genre. And the quality showed. Nevertheless, beast master is still a movie I remember fondly.
