Meh, Alan Moore was a leftie wanker before the world got over run with leftie wankers. Connery had much worse films in his career, like Zardoz, Meteor, Highlander II : The Quickening (so bad the fans of Highlander deny it exists); The Avengers (nothing to do with the superhero franchise). There were a lot of great actors in the film, with some good parts, its the Special Effects, and the Plot (The Venice part was a complete Flop). It looks like time and budget were extreme constraints and the events in Prague doomed the result to just "ok" status, with the lawsuit being a nail in the coffin considering the competition it faced at the box office.

The comics are very good, really something different at that time. The movie is OK, I enjoyed it… Sean Connery made it stand out and a good deal of the box office was his presence in the movie. One observation though… I’m not a book guy, but I really liked H. R. Haggard’s books about Allan Quatermain… Haggard’s descriptions about Africa in King’s Solomon Mine are very vivid, I usually can’t visualize in books, but this one made me feel like I was there. This alone is very impressive not even considering Haggard had never been in Africa. I don’t think the following books are as good, but it’s nice to read about Allan Quatermain. They actually addressed this in Vol 2 of the book: Hyde mentions that he was once shorter than jeckyll, who I think he described as a "once being a strapping fellow". I think Moore got the idea from a throwaway line in the original book about jeckyll mentioning that Hyde seemed to be "growing in him" or something. Don't know about that, never read Stevenson's novel, and the article mentioning it I read at least 10 years ago, but it kinda makes sense: the longer they go on, the more dominant and powerful Hyde gets, so why not physically bigger as well as Jeckyll shrinks (he's pretty scrawny in the books and the movie)? And they've been together at least 50 or so years at this point.

Even more ironic : It is revealed, in a section of the graphic novel series called The Sincerest Form Of Flattery, that the French had their own rival League during La Belle Epoque - (the group called Les Hommes Mystérieux) - and one of its most recognisable members is none other than Arsène Lupin, (the quintessential) Gentleman Cambrioleur.

I enjoyed this film very much. Never got why people hated it, it was pretty entertaining to me. I think people bought too much into Alan Moore's crap. He's such a tool who believes in his own hype. I always laughed when he claimed that 'Watchmen' was "unfilmable" because of the scope because it never made sense. Comics are damn near story boards! Same thing with LXG. Loved it for what it was. Even with the changes from the source material.
@Mesjasz
@Mesjasz 3 года назад
Watchmen was about history of the comic genre, including "what if" scenario where pirate comics take place the superhero once, going through the same evolution from simple stories to sophisticated, and dark tales. It was obviously "unfilmable" because the whole story was created and talked about that one medium. The final product wouldn't be a bad movie on it's own, but lacks any depth, simple, superhero movie, stripping it from any meaning, and concentrating on action. For example death of Comedian was literally one panel in a graphic novel, but they had to do the whole ninja fighting scene in movie, with adds nothing. But you obviously don't know that because you never read watchmen, or any other Moore's works. And what with the "I always laughed when he claimed", like you burst out laughing watching that one interview you saw, and then rewinded to laugh more, or something? Kinda creepy, even if its a hyperbola.

For myself, in 2003 I was still playing the odd role playing game with friends and buying a graphic novel here and there. I picked up the movie on DVD and enjoyed it enough to re-watch it every now and again. I had no idea this much turmoil surrounded the movie. Also, even though I respect Allen Moore as an artist, I still think his criticisms about V for Vendetta and The Watchmen are stubborn and narrow minded. You can't always adapt a comic or novel to a movie, but movies like The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen did a fairly good job before Hollywood got obsessed with reboots and reimagines of 80's properties and truly became the cesspool of "profit in sacrifice of creativity" that it is today.

They all did excellent jobs and had good chemistry at least on film. The sets were amazing. The setting was amazing. This IS and WAS a good movie. It just wasn't what people were looking for when it came out. They really needed to bring each character to life with their own movie THEN make this one. Van Helsing came out around the same time. Another movie trying to break into the monster legacy. Marvel came along a few years later and figured out how to pull off a true Universe launching series. This movie had all the right ingredients except for time. Which is the recipe for cult success movies. Movie wasn't perfect but it deserved better than it got.

I agree with those who like this movie and dissagree with those who don't like it. "The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen" (2003) was in the end an entertaining movie that I can still watch with a smile on my lips! Sir Sean Connery was PERFECT for the role of legendary hero Alan Quatermain, and even if the movie is not perfect by any means it is still IMO not by any means deserving its criticism. Stephen Norrington was arguably not that experienced enough to make such a big-scale story with so many iconic characters to represent and give origin justice for, I mean having icons like; Alan Quatermain, Captain Nemo, Dr. Jykeyll/Mr. Hyde, Mina Harker, Dorian Grey, Pro James Morairty etc is not that easy when they have such a rich history behind them to have in mind at same time giving them the "Alan Moore" treatment. I would have loved to see continuation of this movie and explore more of "The League" into a movie franchise. Just to bad Connery retired and all else was negative about it all.
