The nineties were the heyday of hip stars with teen appeal, but as the decade ended, many of the biggest names of the decade dropped out of the limelight. Some wanted a family, some pursued higher education, and some just had a hard time finding work. In this special edition of WTF Happened to this Celebrity, we track the careers of three nineties icons, Sarah Michelle Gellar (Buffy the Vampire Slayer), Jonathan Taylor Thomas (Home Improvement) and Pauly Shore (Encino Man). All three were big for many years, and all had their reasons for stepping away from the limelight, and we sign into those reasons, and what they’re up to now, in this hour long episode!

SMG is also a fantastic human. She got a reputation for being “difficult” on the Buffy set but it turns out that “difficult” meant that she heavily advocated for her costars being treated equally as important as her. She was constantly pushing back against producer shenanigans that tried to overwork the cast and put them in potentially dangerous situations. She’s continued to do this on her new show where she is again surrounded by young actors.

I have a Pauly Shore story! When I was 8 years old, I was playing with Nickelodeon Gak in the Palm Springs Mall with my cousin and Aunt. Some guy comes up and asks me about the Gak and he joins the fun with us. It wasn't until he left that my aunt told me it was Pauly Shore.

Sarah Michelle Gellar is quite interesting among 90s celebrities because it's not like she did anything to detail her own career. After Buffy she pretty much seemed to settle down and have a happy healthy life with her husband and kids. Actors often stay marketable with just a dash of scandal because it gives them star power to work with. That said, SMG also worked herself into the ground while doing Buffy (not just the show, but also doing movies, and keeping up with her martial arts lessons). Similar story to Melissa Joan Hart.

God I miss the 90s. I was born in 87 and it was the perfect time to be born. I could watch these videos on the 90s all day, every day. Simpler times and nobody cared about what you said and wasn’t glued to their phones and movies and tv shows were so much better… and the toys. I remember always waiting for commercials to see what cool toys to put on my Xmas list. If I had a Time Machine I would go back and relive the 90s over and over and idc if I have to go back to school lol

Same here dude. Born 88 and grew up with alot of the same things. Perhaps we see times different because we where so young. Would be interesting to experience the 90s as a 35 year old who travels back to the 90s. After a while it would probably be a little bit less convinient than what we are used to today.

I have only a little above a zero level interest in the personal lives of the rich and famous (regardless of the reason for them being either rich or famous). But, when I heard SMG had been happily married for 20 years, I tilted my head, smiled slightly and nodded. It is a rarity and strangely pleasing to hear. Edit: additionally; Pauly Shore. I remember watching his films in the 90s when I was in my mid teens to mid 20s. Be satisfying to see him do something similar to Brendan Fraser . . .if that is, in fact, something he wants.

Pauly Shore plays the antagonist in Guest House on Netflix came out in 2020, I was surprised he was still making movies he plays 50-year-old who thinks he is still 20, has Boby Lee and a lot of comedians in it.

I grew up in the 80's & 90's. The truth is some actors from the 90's had careers that flourished & some didn't due to different reasons (main ones being leaving the industry, drugs & death). One of the ones I can think of from the 90's who still has a career today is James Marsden.

Drew Barrymore. Leo DiCaprio. Kate Hudson. Molly ringwald. Christina ricci... There's been a bit of a resurgance lately but you're right- for a while there once a kid actor was no longer a cute child star, their opportunities in the entertainment industry were overall fairly bleak

Scooby-Doo 2 suffered because it was the sequel. I believe it's the superior movie. Its better to watch 2 before 1. Because you know its usually the sequel when the characters in a movie leave their familiar location to go somewhere else, many times exotic. The Freddy/Daphne relationship drama also works well watching 2 before 1. It's like after what happened in 2, the gang couldnt take it anymore and split up, and the island case is what brought them back together and rekindled Fred and Daphne's relationship. Try it out for yourself and see.

The reason Tim Allen was upset is because he helped JTT get out of his contract, but then JTT betrayed him by releasing 4 movies back to back (2 in 1998 and 2 in 1999). So Tim Allen felt betrayed, which makes sense, he genuinely cared.

The SMG kiss wasn’t to show love has no bounds, it was for the dudes. The late 90s/2000s loved to include performative bi scenes in media for men to become aroused. There is a difference between it being for the male gaze or for the female gaze. (The male gaze was prioritized a lot in those days)

I had the pleasure of meeting them at warped tour and they were the most down to earth and amazing and talented people over. And so funny and I also saw them open up for Courtney love before and 2010 and they thought that was quite hilarious because it was definitely an interesting tour xx love him and wonder what they are up to. He sounds like a combination of Freddie Mercury and Paul McCartney. One of a kind. And a doors and Dresden doll like Carnaval sound.😅😅
