In this episode of WTF Happened to this Movie, we look at Zack Snyder’s divisive big-screen adaptation of Alan Moore’s Watchmen. Hollywood tried for years to turn this into a film, with directors such as Paul Greengrass, Terry Gilliam and more attached. In the end, Snyder, who was coming off of another ambitious graphic novel adaptation, Frank Miller’s 300, was the one who made it work. Boasting a unique cast of character actors and a period 1980’s setting, Snyder made a mostly faithful adaptation that was attacked by some critics, hated by others, and divided fans. In this episode, we dig into the film's origins and reception.

The task of adapting Watchmen into film was gargantuan. The fact that Zach Snyder put out anything at all let alone an almost 3 hour long R rated comic book movie with 0 big names attached is nothing short of a hard earned miracle. Snyder and this movie has its faults but he obviously knew the material very well and it was made with a lot of admiration.

@@misaeljoelvera6631 : this is going to sound dumb. But I don’t like it because it’s not an adaptation of the comic, but more a direct remake of it. It’s not a movie, its a live action comic. Not playing to the strengths of either. I can’t put my finger on the problem, but it’s one occurrence, where for me, it’s too much like the book.. which sounds nonsense when written like that.

I'm not a big Snyder fan, but he knocked it out of the park with this film, and despite the changed ending and other varying differences, this is as close to the source material that you can get. I also own the Watchman on DVD and I re-watch it every year or so. I'm too lazy to dig it out to confirm if it's the Directors Cut or not (I think it is). That "Complete Cut" with the added Black Freighter animated story in it...that definitely would be a gem in my DVD collection. Much like so many John Carpenter movies, I'm glad that Watchman is still gaining viewers and realising it was way better than the Marketing people made it out to be "back in the day". Taken on its own, _Watchmen: The Ultimate Cut_ is a masterpiece. Just like Keanu Reeves' _Contantine_ it is a flawed adaptation of its source material, and yes, Synder should have had the balls and kept the squid in. The whole point was that it was a supervillain plan... and it worked. Coming right after Reagan told Gorbachev that "if we were attacked by aliens, we'd come together" in 1985, the squid plan absolutely makes sense in that timeline Too many are too hung up on that Outer Limits thing, but that is not at all what Moore was referencing in the book. As with almost everything he's ever done, he takes his references from the political and social things that happened at the time he was writing it, and then extrapolates it to its satirical and outlandish logical conclusion

Space Vampires by Colon Wilson which 100% Alan Moore would've read because Colin Wilson, a fellow Englishman wrote a lot about the occult and wrote sci fi that Moore would like. My point is that Moore stole the ending so it loses the defense for me. Making the story involve a major character in the book's fate made a tighter story. It changed the story for the better because it was simpler and stronger. I always thought people would take samples of the alien and discover it was fake.

I thought Snyder did a great job adapting this story to film considering how complex the story is and also the length of time he was constrained too. Like Dune, I think this story would have been better split into parts or as a miniseries.

After 'The Dark Knight', the ultimate cut of 'The Watchmen' is probably the best superhero movie ever. Unfortunately it is still underrated.

I first read the graphic novel of Watchmen a couple of weeks before the movie came out. Boy, was that a slog of a read! I barely could get through it in time for the movie. Went with a couple of my friends to see it opening weekend. Loved it. I like Zack Snyder as a director. I watch the Director's Cut every so often still. Jackie is too good in that movie! I even love the Watchmen show. I just like this sort of anti-hero world overall.

I love Watchmen. I like the movies adaption of Dr Manhattan's power being the antithesis for peace instead of the space octopus, I always thought that was lame.

the plot of the movie doesnt make any sense without the space octopus!!

@@andremaurizzio9130 what? Instead of a super abstract villain from space for the governments to band together against they made it into dr Manhattan. It makes total sense.

I love this movie. I remember the first time I heard about it. I was 9, and I saw the trailer with the smashing pumpkins song on the dark knight dvd. and I wanted to see it so bad until I finally watched it when I was around 15. It’s probably my favorite superhero film. P.S. I haven’t read the graphic novel, so I don’t care about accuracy to the source material. I honestly prefer Ozymandias plan in the movie over he’s giant squid plan in the gn.

I had very mixed feelings about the theatrical cut but I liked the Ultimate Cut so much more!

I knew nothing about the comics going into the movie, but I could tell from the advertising that it really wasn't going to be an action spectacular, since they kept only showing the same couple action scenes in every preview. As such, I knew to expect something that was much more of a think-piece.

The watchmen is a master piece. Using the intro to give us some history and some character building was genius! The no name actors didn't bother me because the story was more compelling than the actors. I still consider the Watchmen to be the best super hero movie to date. A somewhat original script, very little super heroesque feats of strength and the most detestable character to remind us what truth is. Sure the Marvel films are great but for the most part they follow the comics.
