"[WTF], I don't even know what I'm looking at!" That's exactly what John Carpenter wanted. He didn't want an alien that looked like a man in a suit, he wanted something real. Audiences were totally unprepared for that.

A question I have always had about this movie. If you become infected with _The Thing_, and you are a perfect copy of someone. Do you *know* that you are a thing? It's such a great movie. One of the best horrors ever put to film. And one of the very few Lovecraftian-esque movies that was successful.

John Carpenters "The Thing" is one of the greatest films ever made. Not just horror, Great films overall...PERIOD. You feel the closed-in impending doom throughout the entire film. Carpenter found a way to make you cold and isolated in your own damn living room. He made you claustrophobic, he made you fear needles, he made you fear exploring space. What a fucking genius move this film was. Carpenter made Halloween 1 & 2 (1978-1981) , Escape From New York (1981) , The Fog (1980), Christine (1983), Prince of Darkness (1987), They Live (1988), In The Mouth of Madness (1994), Escape From LA (1996), as well as his Showtime TV show "Body Bags" consisting of 3 unconnected horror stories told over 3 nights. The man is a fucking genius and don't get me started on his musical stuff. He created the legendary "Theme Song from Halloween 1978".

The scary part is, this whole incident I don't think was part of the Thing's plan. It assimilated Palmer and Norris because they were well out of the way of the rest of the staff, so it could work in three place at once and no one would be the wiser. Once it's in the kennel, all the other dogs know it's not a real dog, so the Thing defends itself, and in doing so, the entire base is now aware it's there.
@86leewis
@86leewis Год назад
It shouldn't have though. It's the only plot hole. Assimilating a dog should have definitely taught it all dog behavior. You couldn't tell Norris was a thing, how would the dogs know it wasn't a dog.

The dogs apparently didn't know. They were unperturbed when the Thing entered and lay down among them. It was only when it started to make that unnatural heavy breathing sound that the dogs started acting spooked. Once it was alone with the dogs, the Thing tried to assimilate them. More bodies means more chances for survival.

There was a lot of urgency on display, but it wasn't always focused. Mac ending up taking the lead because he's tough, smart, and resourceful. But the first one to recognize the magnitude of the threat was Blair. If he hadn't destroyed all the transportation and communication equipment, the Thing would almost certainly have escaped Antarctica and doomed the human race.

I love how every reaction channel was so sympathetic to that damn dog that they didn't even question on to why people were trying to kill it, or where they were or what year it was... am like people.. you do reactions for a living but you can't remember that it tells you in the first 5 minutes in the film that its in Antarctica and its 1982 and plus when I watched this for the first time I was wondering why the Norwegians were trying to kill the dog so I didn't trust it. So it gives me a big smile when they see what the dog actually is and they change there tune pretty quick haha. Also side note, I will give Norwegians some slack cause for one dudes in a helicopter moving around with thick gloves on and he's trying to shoot a fast, small moving target these guys aren't soldiers there mostly researchers and other non combatants but I've done boar hunting on a helicopter before and did I shoot anything maybe three but the rest got away and spent more ammo then am proud of missing a lot cause its pretty hard to shoot something that small and fast moving on a heil but the grenade part was pretty stupid but pretty sure it slipped out of his hand cause of the glove.
