Some people/businesses have no concept on how their poor behavior has consequences. Any time anyone experiences anything like what happened to you in this video they will never patronize that business again.
a night market is supposed to have reasonably priced food but that place is known by locals to be overpriced. that fish is available nearby for 150-200 in aircon resto. in pm busloads of chinese tourists are led to the double priced thai restos
Politeness is a pillar of Thai society but politeness often goes out the door at tourist venues. Some of the bands will blatantly ask for tips from audience or if a song is requested demand money in advance. This behavior would never fly at Thai venues. That would be the last time the band plays there. They can even invite you to jam and tell you to pay first. Fxxxing low life style. I prefer Thai venues as the staff are way more polite and appreciative. In my experience at some tourist venues no appreciation is shown for tips.No thank you, no wai, nothing as if tips are automatic. I stopped tipping or going to those places.
The exact thing happened to me in Pattaya. I had 3 beers in a beer bar totaling 210 baht the receipt wasn't padded as I always check after I order. When I asked to pay the girl asked for 300 baht!!! When I asked why she said tip give tip. I declined and left 210 baht and left. Then people wonder why establishments are closing left, right and center. It's not the amount but the principal of it.
Thai greed… unfortunate attitude I find quite prevalent here, especially in Bangkok. For ฿305 here in Udon, you can get a fish 3x bigger, with a big pile of vegetables, noodles and various dipping sauces, with a spicy somtum and you’ll still have ฿50 left over!!! That business is a joker, not to get negative or anything but it’s helpful to have a good balance of what is good and bad about living in Thailand.
I have a lock on my wallet when I'm in Thailand. She's my Thai wife, and if anyone tries to ripp me off or treat me like a Ferang, she stop them instantly. The scariest part about every time I come back is the increasing prices and how the standard of treatment towards ferangs being treated as walking targets to be ripped off Thailand is becoming like Vietnam.😢 it's sad cause it used to be so much better.
The One Ratchada Market used to be the Night Train Market before Covid. It was incredibly crowded back then. They closed it during Covid and I believe re-opened it behind the Central Mall in Phra Ram 9 and called the Jodd Fairs Night Market. Recently I saw them building the new market behind The Esplanade. Maybe it is just new and getting started. It used to be popular so maybe it will be again one day.
@@keisone absolutely, they've tried similar on me many times but not exactly where the bill showed a different amount than they asked for as with you. Normally the bill will be inflated if they try to scam
Scammers are everywhere, not just in Thailand. If you look like a foreign tourist, there's a good chance opportunistic lowlifes will try to extract money from you.
It's a scam! That's why you pay for the meal before sitting down to eat it. If she told you that it's 400 baht before you started to eat it then you could have just walked away without eating it. Leave them a review on Google maps for the rest of us please! 😂 Ha ha.
I really wish he could leave a review, so we could avoid that vendor. However, Thailand has defamation laws. I saw that one foreigner got sued for reviewing craft beer. He had to pay a huge fine because he said the beer wasn’t good. 🙁 There was another incident involving a foreigner giving a hotel or a resort a bad review. I can’t recall if he spent two weeks in jail or if he was fined.
Mate, that's weird. Out in the burbs where I live they look confused when you leave a tip, not that I do it often. I've even had Grab delivery dudes sending me thank you messages after I've tipped them 20 baht for delivering food in torrential thunderstorms!
The crazy tip culture is from foreigners like American, now we Thai people also have to pay tip in some places like massage so I always hate when some tourists said they pay good tip for the service in Thailand because they start this stupid tipping trend. In Thailand we pay the tip for the nice expensive restaurant only, not the street food. We don’t normally pay tip for the salon , taxi driver or delivery like the American, so pls stop doing it here, it’s bad for us local Thai customers. The reason you should stop bringing tip culture here because firstly they will feel thankful for the tip but later on they will demand the tip automatically, like what it’s already happen in America now.
@@vassanab4243..It has gotten out of hand in the U.S. Even self-serve restaurants are leaving tip jars at the register. They don’t do anything extra to deserve a tip! 😒 Not to mention the food is often average quality and overpriced.
I think this is a MASSIVE indicator of the times globally. So many western countries are struggling under the weight of inflation. I know it’s slow season there and seasonality is a factor at play here. But, I also think that’s why Thailand is pushing for the DTV visa. In the USA there have been so many layoffs in tech, fewer job postings, consumers are not as confident as years prior… all signs of deteriorating markets in western countries. I think the USA is poised for a big economic correction and tourism late this year and early 25 is going to hit Thailand pretty hard.
It's everywhere! Saw a tip box at a stall in Icon Siam. I went to a Recyling / disposal center in the U S that had a $40 minimum, paid and the tip prompt came up. WTF!
You may have added VAT to your bill at most restaurants in Thailand, but there is no requirement for tips. However, the fee is already added into the pricing at most smaller food stalls and street vendors. The fish for 300 Baht was already expensive...that should be at least half the price in BKK! Glad you refused to pay the extorted tip.
Good on you for sticking to your guns. So many expat channels out there recommend being the victim and just paying in those types of situations. What a sign of desperation though. If all the empty stalls didn't spell it out, that move sure did. That market is done for. That was probably your last visit and it was a weird one.
That tip thing has never happened to me. Surprising they tried that, Service Charge on some bills nowadays like back in the West however my wife, who is Thai, catches those quick and no tip given if that is added. You handled it the same I would have.
The reason for closing stalls in my opinion is that high interest rates around the world is making people spend less money on things like travelling. I myself work in the tourist industry in Iceland and I can feel it as well. Inflation is also kicking in at the same time so prices are higher.
Tipping is mostly not a thing in Thailand. If you try to tip at at a restaurant, you will probably get weird stares, and the server will be like, what is this for? And tipping in restaurants in America is usually for table service where you have a waiter serving you, and it's usually not over 20% of the bill... 30% is WAY too much. I remember a time in America when tip was only 10 or 12 percent. But greedy tip inflation happened, so it's now more like 18 to 20 percent of the bill nowadays. We went from 10 to 12 to 15 to 18 to 20 percent, such a slippery slope. What is that food vendor expecting extra tip for? They didn't provide you table service or go above and beyond to deserve it, which is what a tip is supposed to be for. Although, I hear people are tipping their food delivery people over there, like Grab food delivery. Food delivery people make very little, kicking them an extra 20 to 50 baht won't break the bank and will brighten their day.
In the USA, tipping has gotten ridiculous when the restaurant staff are expecting a tip for pickup /takeaway/ takeout orders! I refuse to tip when I was not waited on.
Hey yo brother I used to live of talat plu and taught English, I think if you ever needed a good idea for a video, do a good video comparing like southern Thai food vs northern. Laab v pad kra pao etx
The one ratchada was pumping last september, went again in may and it was 70% Chinese tourists, its not their fault, all the tour companies bring them in. the prices went up too, all the thais avoid it now.
that market is pretty popular after hours with workers who work late.....during rainy season a lot of those workers can take a break so the market patronage drops dead.....you were given the honour of being quoted the "no customerrrrr" price, thinking that will save their bacon.......
that night market has an indian resto great food, no frills and 1/3 to 1/2 price of other indian restos and open from lunch time. name kebab and curries
I think everyone is suffering with the cost of living, we would love to come back to Thailand but at the moment it's not happening. Hopefully things will get better for wherever you live in the world/
Hey Adam, a little personal story on those Tungsten rings. Are they cool, yes they are, so much so that I brought 2 as my wedding rings 5 years ago (a spare in case I lost one as they were so cheap 450 baht each on the websit we went to at the time) fast forward to a couple months ago, I lost 1 playing golf at Nikanti so thought I would get another spare, brought 2 different designs kn Temu, one for $au13, the other $au1.19. One side note, bad news about Jett wasn't it, let's hope Hunter can bring it home.
That place has been dead for a long time, not surprising it has fallen further. Demanding a tip is something more common in touristy areas. Was asked for it at Jodd fairs.
Why are you supposed to tip 95 baht? You should ask the waiter whether you are Thai or a foreigner working in Thailand. This is something you should know. In Thailand, there is no tipping culture. If you want to give, do so because you want to, not because you feel obligated.
haha, never heard of that exactly... but I do get an obvious 'suggested' tip feeling from people that particularly come back with unnecessarily small denominated change to the point of feeling uncomfortable.
when you give you get. no matter if its mind over matter, if the server is wrong. they will be punished. Dont take those matters in your hands. raise up!
Such a massive shame what happened to that market after the pandemic. Closed during, "never to open again" then I was super happy to learn it had reopened when I visited last year as it used to be one of my favourite markets to go for food and drinks 9not to mention some wicked little "proper" clothing stores, barbers, and tattoo shops) back in its heyday. But alas, I saw exactly what you saw here. Not even half of what it used to be, zero character/vibe to the place. Very sad. R.I.P Ratchada Night Train Market. 😢
We went to The One Ratchada in 2023 it was brilliant great bars and food. Went back in February this year and it was half empty !!! None of the bars at the back were open 😒 shame because it was such a great market nowhere near as busy as the rest 😢
Yo, I used to live in Pattaya for about two years. I’m moving back from usa for school and I’m thinking of going to Bangkok. How do I reach out to link up for a beer or smoke?
If you haven't stopped into Health Land (I saw the sign @0:16) it may be worth checking out. I've been to the Chaeng Wattana location a few times and always enjoyed it.
You sure you didn’t wake up in America 😂 , reminds me when I was in New York when the tour bus driver explained if you are not from here you must tip me, so of course we didn’t. F you 😂
I think you went to the market under Makkasan Station. They have markets here adhoc anything from Denim / street fashion to food van nights. Also started a bicycle 100km night ride from there. It’s an interesting space. Many moons ago this station had check in luggage as they tried to copy HK where you check luggage in on the train. All luggage was continually missing flights 😅that’s why the station is so big and that process now abandoned Thailand!
prefer 7eleven or food courts (u will never have bills problems there) . Honestly night markets for me are just like an uncomfortable big fair where food is rarely good😬
I almost never tip in Asia because I didnt think it was a things especially in Japan. They want you to tip because nobody is going there and them forcing you a tip makes you not want to go back so maybe thats why is dead!
Hope it is not a trend, Or is it a farang thing because most Thai's don't pay a tip. I only give a tip if they provide a good service and should be up to you when and where it takes place.
I think the restaurant's foreign employee was trying to swindle money from the customer. Because the shop owner probably doesn't have a policy like this. 🤔
The crazy tip culture is from American tourists, now we Thai people also have to pay tip in some places like massage so I always hate when some tourists said they pay good tip for the service in Thailand because they start this stupid tipping trend. In Thailand we pay the tip for the nice expensive restaurant only, not the fast food one. We don’t normally pay tip for the salon or taxi driver like the American.
If its any consolation it's been the same in the UK all month & cold. British summer. Yet the powers that be are telling us its the hottest summer on record. As for your 305/400 bill. Look around at the closed areas. These people are running out of customers/money and falling into survival/scam mode.
Last time I was at Ratchada Market was shortly before c19. It was absolutely overwhelmed with Chinese tourists. Shocked to see it look like Dead Market. You got hit for tipping on account of slow business I assume...
Not only did she want a tip,.. she wanted a 30% tip,… don’t tell me they’re gonna start that now in Thailand,.. next thing you know they’ll have a pop up tip window for food you order online for take -away like they do in America …. Ridiculous!
Service charges of 10-20% are pretty much standard practise in the west now, maybe some SE asian places are catching on and thinking they can get away with it with farangs even though tipping isn't de rigueur out there. One place in my home town in the UK that tried to rip me off recently (£10 for noodles + cost of the menu dish...) got busted for illegal workers - so it seems these more scammy places will employ many different techniques to make more money 'on the side'...
Was there in January ‘24 and it was busyish but not crazy. I really didn’t like all the gimmicky food that was obviously only there cater to the Chinese tourists that were the majority of the patrons. The night life side was also dead as well. Sad, because I loved the general area just the market kinda sucked.
They might have moved to the new Jodd Fairs night market. Been there yet? It's pretty good. Take the BTS 1 stop past Mo Chit and walk north a bit. When you see the castle, you're there ! Try the Tower of Pork Ribs !
They making longer business. Just 400 baht. it's a little money from you and waste time to Scam..!! This business income around 100,000 Baht der day...Hello Skeptic farang
The fact that meteorites cost thousands and thousands of dollars for even small specimen should make anyone pause and wonder about their claim of how their rings are made with "space rocks".
