Okay so yes I’m super late but I can’t believe I didn’t see these campaigns earlier and maybe if I did a year ago I wouldn’t have thought twice about them. Do you feel you’ve outgrown a lot of Chanel?

I have actually been thinking about this type of issue recently due to several creators making videos in this vein about young versus older women being culturally centered. And I have come to the conclusion there are several causes but the heart is that female hierarchy is upside down. I see what Chanel is doing as just a reflection this issue. Think about it for a moment…. Do females climb the female/woman centered hierarchy or rankings as they age now? In the modern world, no. Historically yes. Women only became higher ranking and respected by doing certain things. Sometimes it was becoming the proverbial wise woman or midwife. More commonly she married and had children and then grand children and as she did this she gained more responsibility and power. And I really mean that. People do not realize that women basically controlled the provisions at bare minimum [usually doing far more] typically which was absurdly vital. Women created and maintained the haven and safety that was the home and everyone in it far more than seen in a 50s housewife clip. That is the modern version of it missing all substance to the purpose of difficulty of it even now, if done properly. They often managed whole clans on par with managing the equivalent of a small business. What gives women status now? Being either a sex symbol or casting aside womanhood for accomplishment that typically is not about people, society, harmony or the family. Women and men are motivated differently and now women must usually ignore what motivates us because the archetype of a resplendent mature woman has been lost. There is no map culturally or precedent to look to. But, now… Where are the matriarchs? Nowhere. In previous times would you see anyone paying much heed to very young women? No, probably instead their mothers and grandmothers because they are figures of respect with more life experience. You can’t see this anywhere in current media but you can see this modeled in some historical asian dramas. People do not realize the sheer extent of what we have lost and the gravity and depth of the impact. This is one of many reasons that older women do not receive respect. Their roles that give them that have dissolved with culture. We still need them but it is not happening anymore. Mature women right now get the short end of the stick. Two random additional specific examples come to mind. In terms of fashion as you progress in status your clothing should reflect that, which typically means more luxe/formal. Is that the current vibe? No. Also, we are just figuring out all the ways we have screwed women’s health. As an example, I just discovered you are not supposed to go through hell during menopause. If you do it is a sign your adrenals were unhealthy and could not properly compensate for your ovaries shutting down. This being screwed up increases cortisol which ta da makes the belly fat build up.

@@DemureDarlings How interesting that you interpreted my post as if I was writing that everyone who buys expensive things is trying to impress others. 🤔 I wrote about my personal experience with Chanel, that I bought Chanel bags not because I liked them, but to impress people. Same here. I didn’t start buying Chanel until I bought a house for my family, built a nice size of investment portfolio and insurance. A responsible person can’t reasonably afford Chanel until they become financially sound, usually in their 30s or 40s. Therefore, Chanel is targeting those born rich or financially irresponsible.

I am a woman in my 40s and the following is what struck me. I earned a much higher than average income all through my 20s and 30s working in finance, catering to ultra high net worth clients (yes, this is a categorization). Despite loving luxury, I never even contemplated the idea that I could or should spend more than $2k on a bag, which was still a rare indulgence for me. My life was also very chaotic and high stress, which allowed me to earn the living that I did. Seeing these girls portray this laid-back lifestyle, talking about what is essentially mindfulness, while carrying their Chanel bags, is laughable. It makes me think that Chanel is now only targeting the ultra wealthy, but not even people who earned their fortune through work - just people who were born into it. Great video, thank you!

Ad #2 is disgusting. To be honest, most of these are disgusting. I have a very love/hate relationship with marketing, ugh! I'm a graphic designer that wants to go into marketing, but if I were to work on such campaigns I'd hate myself. Selling people "happiness" as purses, or items that are overpriced and overhyped. Just selling things that people don't need and lying to them they do.. Also, the description of her day omg... it's like what I've been recently seeing on tiktok - how influencers say they have a busy day - need to get my nails done, facial appointment, and groceries. I mean, we normal folk have to do it all after our 9-5...

I remember when teens wanted a Dooney & Bourke bag...and could sometimes get it. That seemed like such a healthier scenario for teens. Setting them up to want a bag that costs thousands of dollars seems cruel and very strange.

Yes they are brain washing the young one's to buy Chanel and other luxury brands. 30 year olds are waking up, becoming mature, and may want to buy a house. Over 10k or more on a bag, is crazy, you could buy a decent car for that. Love your channel. Debra xxx

I'm in my 30s and these types of ads don't do anything for me either. I may be showing my age a little, but ads like this come across as cringy to me. What I wonder is whether Chanel is trying to appeal the 'aesthetics' that so many of those from younger generations seem to build so much of their personalities and lifestyles around?

The fact that it said ‘nutritionize’ and she had another drink and not actual food was alarming to me personally. Yes smoothies can be super healthy and a good meal replacement if that’s what you want, but that seemed unhealthy in the context of models/fashion

I'm 22. First impression, kind of cringe. Definitely catered to teens. But I also don't care for designer brands like these. I care more for quality items that will last me years and the change of trends. They are forgetting that genz generation is a little different from other generations (my opinion). More and more younger people are seeing what designer brands like these actually do and are. And that having brands like Gucci just doesn't give you anything really. This feels like a 15 year old ad in 2023 format, Idk how to explain.

Funny enough, what I’ve realized recently is that the reason we (current) 30+ year olds shop the way we do is also from early consumption of media. Most if not all TV shows & movie we grew up watching has the brand be worn & mentioned. Like SATC Birkin, or The Nanny with Chanel, or even GG with all other brands you can imagine. And then we have music videos, songs written about designers etc. that is how our generation were target to shop how we now shop. It’s so mind blowing how a group of people can control how we consume as we get older.

I work at a private boarding school and noticed the girls have charlotte tilbury setting sprays, Cartier bracelets, and Lancôme eyeshadows. The girls dress up like Tik tok influencers. Anytime you scroll on TikTok and see something being advertised which sounds dumb or just unrealistic, it’s the tweens and teens. One of the kids told me that she was buying water off Sephora and she wanted a phone holder for showers. The rich tweens are the new demographic, mainly because they’re just so gullible and eager to express themselves in new ways as much as possible

My husband and I were just recently discussing this, now that I am in my late 30s. I understand that I am officially OLD. And guess what? I couldn't be more thrilled about it. I am so happy to not be the target demographic anymore. I am happy in my skin and in my mind. I am happy to not be part of the trendy crowd anymore. With age comes wisdom and security and self-esteem. I feel they’re aimed at people like me, women in our fifties plus. They know the older Clientele often don’t spend cash the same on ourselves and a 20 year old cannot afford to, but we may buy for our daughters, nieces, God-children, therefore giving the House another 30 years of making money from us. LV are the same with models looking around 14 years old spruiking very colourful bags or the new cheap looking sequinned range due out now. Heaven help all the parents vying for that new Chanel star bag to get their daughter for Christmas 😰. Thankfully mine think my bags are a stupid waste of money and still prefer concert tickets or airline tickets!

I think that’s everyone. We are a lot more concerned what people think of us when we are younger. We want to belong to a groups. Advertisers spend the big bucks to tell young us that purchasing this or that (can be anything really not even luxury clothes) is a way to belong.

I think many are realizing how expensive it is to impress other people. Where as Z and Alpha haven't quite learned that the older you get.. the more you see the banality of consumption I don't see designer brands as being long term sustainable .just like gambling and casinos.. when people have so much debt and housing/food costs are so high.

The ad is for the Chanel BRAND- not just the handbag. The RTW is extremely expensive and pretty conservative for the most part. The more mature audience goes for the RTW. Most younger people think the RTW is predictable , boring, and frumpy. However, it performs very well. The younger audience can start their Chanel journey with cosmetics and sunglasses. As they get older and start working-move on to Handbags and shoes. Then move on to RTW and Haute Couture ( for some) as they get older. Chanel- THE BRAND- has all bases covered. They did $17 BILLION last year. They know what they are doing and laughing all the way to the bank.

These ads are very off putting. I remember being a teen interested in fashion and being excited about the ads and photoshoots in Vogue. It was the only access I had to high end fashion design. I really loved some of the concepts back then - they told stories that reflected the character of a brand. They made sense. Even without a logo you could tell who made the ad. These ads on the other hand seem like adults trying to be cool in front of teens, only considering trends without retaining any individual brand character. In general, I find that luxury brand ads these days are very interchangeable. Even for ads, they seem empty. However, marketing research shows that children, teens and young adults are most inflluenced by people that are slightly older than them. So usually the target audience is a few years younger than the people in the ad. They are targeting YOUNG teens! On another note, the 22 does not look appealing in any of the shots 🙈

So a few things: 1. That first ad gave me some Balenciaga vibes due to the very young looking girl doing adult things. It made me very uncomfortable. 2. What’s with the cheesy voice overs? & the comic book entries are tacky. Overall, I’m with you Caitlin, these ads made me embarrassed to have my Chanel bags. Maybe I’m being a bit dramatic, but I don’t want to be associated with a brand that’s marketed this way. It leaves a bad taste in my mouth so much that it eclipses my appreciation for the timeless style of the bag. Furthermore, why focus on a young demographic when part of their selling point was their timelessness? I’ve been put off by luxury recently anyways, these cheesy and rather desperate ads just solidified my reluctance. This was great video. I’m tired of hearing of the idolization of luxury brands, especially Hermes & Chanel. God bless you Caitlin, keep up the awesome videos ❤

Not a fan of Chanel raising prices, and appeal to young women at the same time. The reality is, people that can afford to spend a lot of money at Chanel and continue to do so are middle-aged women and men.

Maybe because they know that adults have more experience - and are understanding that spending £10k for a bag does not mean you get quality or that it lasts. In fact spending that £10k when you are not getting craftmanship, marks you for a fool easily parted with their money. Im not knocking off quality and craftmanship . Im mocking "luxury", ie brands and logos.

I had not seen these ads before. But you pointed out some important things. It is not even just that they are brainwashing them for the future, it is "buy a bag, it will fix your loneliness" - is just awful. I do not relate to these ads too, and more it turns me off from Chanel. In another way, majority of these teens no matter how much they want it, can not afford it. So, the assumption is that they will want the same bad when they no longer relate to this ad. I am not sure that is true. By the time they understand how hard it is too earn money, and save enough for this bag, they may also think this bag represents a time in their life when they were insecure. It will take years for Chanel to know if these ads work. In the mean time, they may be losing customers who are turned off by these ads. I think it makes so much more sense to actually target +45 year old women. Those who have raised their kids, bought their homes, and now have some money to spend on themselves. Chanel has the classic looks that can be appreciated by them too.

Hi Caitlin...the truth is no bag however grand in quality deserves over 300 dollars. You're literally giving the money away to profit the brand names that can't care the less about us, whilst if we buy from the small and medium businesses who genuinely cares about the quality, and pouring money to them will benefit the whole society.

I am 42, I love Chanel but recently they made some really strange releases… I see that they want new demographic as their clients but as I see younger generation is not interested in this brand at all, they have different values, at the same time Chanel loses their loyal clients of older generation… doesn’t make sense to me, but it’s their policy so maybe I won’t be interested in Chanel sooner than later😊

I don’t really know what to think besides “that was weird”. 🙃😂 After resuming the video and seeing what you have to say about it, I definitely agree that it seems like they’re trying to reach a younger demographic. The whole thing feels very out of touch with real life. It also reminds me of this product line Coach did recently (and might still be doing) with a toy brand (I think Mattel?). It’s this line of mini bags that were clearly targeting a younger audience and maybe fishing for some nostalgia from the millennial audience. I saw ads for it here on YT a few times and thought it was ridiculous. Oh god there’s two more…😂 ok after resuming again, I will not specifically comment on the ridiculous imagery and dialogue for these two ads because there’s too much to say. 😂 Similar to the first one, I do think they are trying to target teens and twenties. I think all three ads are just very out of touch with reality. And like you explained, they’re *attempting* (poorly😂) to portray an aspirational life of a younger person and connect those feelings to their products. The imagery and dialogue they’re using seems as though they’re wanting to say “our products will transport you into your dream life and the person you’ve always wanted to be”. 🙄 This is obviously absurd, and to make it worse, I feel like they are doing so in a way that is (accidentally?…purposefully?) promoting toxic societal standards, disorders, extreme ways of thinking, and toxic aesthetics- Including “that girl”, “girl boss”, “clean girl aesthetic”, “not like other girls”, “pick me girl”, “mean world syndrome”, “h*roin chic”, “thin is in”, “body checking”, and several more. All in all, it’s very much like what you said about Kylie’s fashion line- IT’S NOT NEEDED. 🫠 For context, I am 31 and the only two “designer” bags I’ve ever owned were from Coach and Michael Kors…both were gifts I received in my late teens / early twenties. I did not personally want/ask for them or any designer bag in general, but I used them off and on for a couple years and then sold them. I’m mainly a one-bag person. 😅 I’ve had the same crossbody bag for several years, which I bought secondhand, that I use for errands/outings. Then I have a belt bag I use every time I walk with my dog, one “fancy” bag I use for special occasions, and a backpack for travel/hiking. 👍 Oh, and several reusable grocery bags if you want to count those. 😛

Yes, Chanel bag designs are even looking child like. They are no longer stylish or sophisticated in the new seasonal bags and accessories.Sugar daddy apps are going to be full of young girls.

That age group doesn’t have the funds for Chanel prices. When I was a teen I don’t even remember what kind of handbag I had probably under $20 for sure. This collection reminds me of the Pink collection by Victoria Secret, with the difference that underwear is way more affordable then. Handle fashion. I wonder what it does to teens to want to have this and not being able to, only for the very rich. I can afford Chanel, now over 40, if I had a girl teen asking me for a Chanel, I would never buy it for her, it’ll feel wrong. It’s too much money.

They are planting seeds for the future .. they want them for life ..in the 90’s they did the same thing with Kate Moss .. I always wanted a Chanel bag .. finally have a few .they do not make my life complete but I am happy I can have them .. it’s like a guy that wants an expensive sports car . All expensive designer brands use very young models .

I really wanted to talk about this on my TikTok but haven’t made the time yet…which girls that look like that can afford CHANEL on their own without parents’ money? Like be fr I’m in my mid 30s and can now only afford CHANEL. This marketing is so ridiculous

All the people over 39 aren't the target in advertising because it is considered that when you are 30s you have developed your personality and your taste and you can't be influenced that easily. That was a known fact, I am surprised that you didn't knew that already.

Ahhhh capitalism 😍 In my 30s and I find those ads hilarious and so absurd... I found this first ad with the voice message so cringe worthy. Everyone who heared a teenager share a story with their friends knows there is an overflow of information and nothing like what they show 😂 It's screams to me like something a 30+ years old marketing person thinks a teenager would talk like. Just cringe and no thanks.... Very nice video!

This bag is not even nice (in my eyes), but I understand that it is a matter of preference. You can buy really high quality Italian leather bags that cost much much less and are really nice. When I was younger I also cared a lot about brands but now I understood real value of things. Thank you for your videos, I really like your honest and different point of view.

A young girl like that couldn’t afford all that Chanel nor would she want to wear a Chanel tweed blazer out to hang out with her friends. Also weird to lay in bed with your bag. Also I’m thinking all those flashy luxury items would make her a target for robbery running around the city at night

They show NYCity to seem urbane which is also a sales gimmick that has nothing to do with chanel suits. LIke did they say brooklyn? Brooklyn we heard's not the best area. There's one nice apartments there is all. Yes teens can save for these items in jobs like we said before, but they probably won't. Maybe they are trying to hook them for when they get more money in the future. They could buy a 3K bag if they got a job saved every penny as a teenager to buy it. Working for like $1.35 an hour for a year part time we saved 3K about after saving every penny. But that isn't affording a chanel bag because you can't afford it if that's how it is. They sell the idea that they have lots- of friends. That's something teenagers like even 14 would aspire to be like.

My first thought was, "Whoa, body inclusive!" I didn't expect to see that from Chanel. I've heard more than one woman say they wanted a Chanel Classic Flap, but when they got it, it felt like a rich old lady, not like them. I think they're actively trying to change the perception. The second ad is just off-putting.

A lot of people in their 20s are now more interested in social media experiences. Those whom can afford luxury will push forward. At the end of the day, u always look upon buying the bag u can't afford no matter what age group u are at. In the 20s, many people are planning to get married. This cost money as well.

Dacob mentioned the appropriation of nature activities in Chanel's minaudiere of the surfer's combi van. The best things in life are free but here's an over priced chanel bag that has nothing to do with the activity or the culture. It's crass, especially when surf culture is about living in the same 2 swimsuits all summer.

I thought Whitney was just a model. At 28, I feel like the directors should be embarrassed about how chaotic the explosions and boomerang gifs seemed in the storytelling. It only works when it's intentional (ie 1/3 as often). They are really trying to idealize your 20s, especially now that the pandemic is over. I hope these ads don't work on teenagers, leaving them to long to be a nepo baby like Lily Rose Depp (daughter of Johnny Depp). The scripts for the first and last ad were pretty good, even if unrealistic. It looks like Chanel is trying to attach themselves to every kind of lifestyle with an inescapable undertone of wealth. Most 20-somethings wouldn't want to spend their own money at Chanel once they know the price point

Of course, there are children of the super-rich whose families will buy them a bag, or a middle-class family who might give them one as a graduation gift. Still, it's inappropriate to advertise such expensive things to young people who don't have a fully developed pre-frontal cortex.

Because those older than their age demographic remember only 1-2 years ago when $10k was not an expected handbag goal price. American Girl Dolls under Mattel found some years back that their age demographic likes animals, esp horses, so they had a Girl of the Year doll that rode horses. Now those girls are adolescents.

I’m 42 and I honestly don’t get it how people in their 20es can afford Chanel. I first was able to afford it in my mid 30ies, perhaps because I was prioritising to buy my first flat and travel around Europe. I don’t really see many girls running around with Chanel at work in London either. I think it’s only a small layer of the society can afford it.

It's never been easier to have a hustle. Between buying and seller ng online, RU-vid, Instagram, Patreon.... A 19 year old with a little hustle can easily clear a Chanel bag. Make up the depreciation with RU-vid videos and kick it down the road after a year. After the sale you might be out $300. You rented a Chanel bag for less than $30/month
