(reuploaded due to copyright claims and region locks) Apologies for that!
This anime is gorgeous, but it's plot left me with a migraine.
At times it felt like a sitcom mixed with a trashy bachelor tv show.
The music alone though lulls me to sleep all the time, I'm a sucker for the oboe.
This anime proved to be far more inappropriate than it lets on. It's an oldie 90s anime that will give you great nostalgia, but that style simply masks the horrors it contains underneath the surface. I felt like you guys should be properly warned!

For me, Utena's "Revolution" was never hers - it was Anthy's. And it wasn't some grand, worldwide revolution. No, it was Anthy's inner revolution against the abusive relationships she's been in for so long. Anthy escaping Ohtori Academy and it's terrible romantic plot threads - her own brother, the manipulating, the pedophilia - all of it was left behind at the realization that someone did genuinely care for her. That she was worth more than just a love interest or as a doll or even as a witch. That someone, somewhere, was looking out for her, not for them self, but out of genuine concern. And at the end of it all, Someday, Together, They'll Shine.

Raging Red also, Anthy had been involved in the duels for YEARS and seen many supposed princes come and go. Nothing changed. That’s why there’s so much cyclical and repeated footage. Anthy has seen all this before over and over again. So when Utena came along; she didn’t see how Utena was changing her because she just expected it to end the exact same way… until it didn’t

Utena and Anthy weren't making out with Akio, they were being sexually abused by him and didn't truly want it. Also Anthy's character as well as the show in general was meant to appear as some crazy cardboard cutout fairytale at first only to turn out to be much deeper metaphorical feminist empowering story. Utena didn't die becoming the prince she wanted, but instead died becoming the vehicle to Anthy's freedom and revolutionizing the toxic environment of Ohtori academy from Akio

I hate to sound pretentious and I love all the effort put into this video, but it really sounds like she may have missed the point of huge chunks of the narrative, like saying Anthy’s personality is wet cardboard when she’s been abused to be something people should be able to project onto, or pointing out that Utena is still sleeping with Anthy’s brother even though “she knows he has a fiancé” when he’s grooming both of them and it was never really their decision even though they think it is.

You can’t go into shows like this expecting everything to make sense literally. It’s not for everyone, but most of the story happens symbolically instead of being represented by the literal plot. The rules of the real world do not apply here, it’s only about exploring human character

Mikumi Shiota I felt nothing for any of the characters, honestly. When you get past all the metaphors, symbolism and illusions, most of the characters just really don’t hold up. They were all such delusional sociopaths that I just wanted them all to be committed into a mental asylum by season 3. But instead, all the (presumably) surviving characters were casually let off the hook for the most part, and I was convinced this all actually took place in a mental asylum from the very beginning anyways. I don’t think literal interpretations of this series are valid _in any respect._ And the purely metaphorical dream sequence angle is probably the only thing keeping me from actively _hating_ all the characters; I don’t even know if I can believe the reasons they’ve given me to hate them. I can praise the series for it’s visuals, themes, and music but holy shit, it felt like even the writers themselves were getting confused after awhile. The least I expect from a show or movie is to feel like the creators have a grasp on what they’re making. I’ll give it this; I’ve never felt more uneasy while watching an anime. I just don’t think it was for the reasons the writers intended. Keeping in line with the series obsession with metaphors and cars: It was basically the story equivalent of being in the passenger seat with a REALLY skilled driver who has no idea where they are, where to go, or how they got there. So you want to trust that they won’t get you killed as they speed down the highway into oncoming traffic, but at the same time, you have no idea where they’re going or why, and you’re scared they’ll still find a way to slip up and crash at any moment. All you know is they don’t have a destination, and you’re stuck in that car until they either give up, or crash.

The only thing I really want to comment on is Utena doesn't sleep with Anthy's brother, she was raped. It's in the dialogue in a very subtle way. Utena doesn't talk about how good she felt after it, but instead focuses on everything else around her. Also also Anthy pretty much was manipulated by her brother throughout all this, and she thinks she loves her brother, but Utena shows her what true love is. Also also, the movie is a sort of alternate timeline, and the manga ALSO ALSO has another Alternate timeline where the whole thing was a sort of dream. and yes yes, this whole thing is basically an allegory for girls can be gay and it can be true love and other types of love shown in this are all different and taboo (along with the gay ones), but they're not healthy compared to Utena and Anthy because Utena simply wants Anthy to be happy and Anthy is in massive self denial because she was never able to just love herself or care for her choices. Anthy is effectively an abused victim through out that Utena helps, and effectively becomes her prince because of it. The anime, manga, and such are way way too symbol heavy so it can be very exhausting to watch, but it actually does make sense. I think the next one you should try to explain is Yurikuma, it's a lot like Utena with it's symbolize and out there plot, and believe it or not, is even more out there!
@LilyUnicorn

No. She wasnt raped. I knew someone was going to rail off about this. It shows the awkwardness and confusion of Utenas mindset and the predatory nature of Akio, yes, but not rape. Plenty of women are used in their life and not raped. Go figure. Just ask every failed relationship from women who chase after bad boys who cheat on them 24/7. Which is not the point of the scene. Utena chasing after the prince and wanting to be her own idealiatic view of him was the point. She has no idea what shes doing. And he. Doesnt care. Shes just another piece to him. Another scratch on the bed post. The only rape in the series was described in the movie .....utenas ex boyfriend had been raped in his youth. Shocker. Its a man who was raped. If you watch the directors other works, you would have understood confusion, naivete and idolization do not equal rape. Director is all about symbolism. Not porn or even normal writing. He has never written sex as a normal pleasure motif. It usually represents something a lot weirder in his works.

Calling Anthy's character bland as wet cardboard and making it out to be inconsistent is enough to illustrate how much you've missed the point of this show. Anthy is a very complicated character, who builds up through out the series, throwing subtle easily missable hints about her true personality here and there in the beginning parts, due to her position as Rose Bride not letting her be any more direct about it and we don't see her be truly honest about herself with anyone until the very end of the show, but while esoteric and enigmatic she is consistent and well thought out character from beginning to end. In general it kinda sounds like you went into this show expecting it to be a sort of straight told tomboy power fantasy, when it actually aims to further explore and subvert the very idea of that sort of narrative.

yes, Anthy has her own character, but she's manipulated/abused/brainwashed by Akio to be a doll. Throughout the series her character comes out through the gaps in control, meaning that her true character is always there, and only Utena (and we viewers through her eyes) can see it, because Utena unwaveringly believes in it. It becomes obvious when Nanami tries to shame Anthy, and it turns out Anthy really loves all sorts of critters and keeps them around, possibly to represent how these creatures have their own feelings and thoughts, but people cannot perceive them, the same situation she's in.

Yeah utena is unfortunately like a trap, because it adheres to normal show conventions with the traditional tournament arc but from the start it’s breaded in symbolism and storytelling techniques that are not used very much. Like from the beginning it’s telling its story and themes Utena in the boy outfits and a teacher questions it, this sets up 1.the whole thing about utena being a prince and 2. The show will dear with systems of authority and sortof 3. We show that utena is a jock which will be useful to show why she is already able to do athletic things, even if it’s the sword of dios that gives her the ultimate power. Also her early relationship with wakaba also sets up ideas about relationships in utena and how they function. This will of course come to head in the black rose arc. Like sure car=power/freedom but the show is easy to understand if you stop worrying about what makes sense in reality, because honestly I see them all as dead and this is their purgatory just it has no reason to be stated, so all the nonsense makes sense then. But from a media perspective I think utena is a great show to test yourself on because yeah it’s a trap for people who see it as another show. Like utena I think should be watched after sailor moon, or evangelion, or princess tutu, not because they use the same techniques but because they have similar ways to think about the story.

As an abuse victim myself(even now still as I don’t have the means to leave), Anthy’s “180 betrayal” and siding with Akio again in the final episode is SO understandable. even though you’re able to slowly realize you need to leave your abuser and finally starting to think for and care about yourself, the moment the norm is broken, the moment there’s a chance your abuse may TRULY end, GOD YOU GET TERRIFIED. and you rethink everything. “Maybe I’m overreacting to how they treated me. I doubt they actually think to themselves “I want to abuse you”. It just comes out that way, no one’s perfect, they want the best for me and love me. If I give them another chance, whether they take or not, it’ll for sure be better than THIS.” Because that’s you feel safe with. When you feel unsafe your entire life, that becomes your normal, your own feeling of safety. The possibility of that normal being broken and you living a life without abuse is so so so scary. You get scared and you do a 180 and some people release that feeling of panic in an aggressive manner ofc. Your scared of the string snapping and what happen if it does, so you let it drag you back.

This aspects of this I relate so much to. For me it's the free of abandoning someone, so I abandon my own needs. The more like me they are the more it feels like past trauma. What helps a lot, but definitely not, unfortunately the deus ex of confronting abuse is that I know I'm an incredibly forgiving person, therefore once I've had enough it's really time to start listening to myself. The follow through is not perfect yet. I absolutely agree about unsafe being the norm. It's also really scary if you've had people try to live through you and control you like Akio does, to have to detach while they're saying things that don't match your reality/truth. For me it's the most destabilizing factor. Now that I think about that that's really indicative of abusers. That for me is the most panic inducing thing. Have a negative opinion about me but please have it because we both are seeing the same thing and you find it unacceptable. Actually, writing this was so fucking helpful. Thank you for saying this.

@@LilyUnicorn There is no real binary in abuse, so yeah agreed on that point about them abusing each other. Abuse teaches abuse. The longer it goes on the worse the abuse gets on both sides. Also, I understand why you'd read the moment of Anthy stabbing Utena as "dumb shock value", but it also has a lot to do with the fact that she is conditioned to believe in the gender roles Akio has imposed her into. It's also a common response of abuse victims to hurt or turn their backs on people who want to help them, out of fear of the unknown an the kindness people give them, because abuse and manipulation is all they've known. It is a shitty thing to do, specially in this scenario, but it's not really Anthy talking, if you recall back to this scene, Akio is indirectly and directly bombarding her, telling her what she should be, what she is and how she truly enjoys being the submissive person she is It's another result of the intense manipulation and abuse Akio has imposed onto her

And honestly, you can't take anything of RGU at face value...there's a meaning behind all the symbolism and characterization of the characters. as well as a lot of surrealism. Even the more filler-ish episodes and the more comic relief characters tend to have moments where they shine, or where they have importance. The theme of princes and princesses and castles, as well as the duels, all play an important part in talking about the characters' struggles and roles in gender as a whole. Utena wants to be a prince that saves princesses from danger because she doesn't want to see anyone suffer like she, and several other characters, once did. Anthy represents this blank slate of a character who seems to change to everyone's wishes like a doll because for a grand part of the series, she's treated as this doll, this ideal needed to concieve purity and revolution. And this is where I get deeper into **major spoilers**, and other **graphic themes**, like abuse... Anthy is passed around from duelist to duelist because she's not treated as a person--not even by her own brother, who sexually abuses her and treats her like a tool in order to try to concieve purity himself. All the characters duel for her in order to reach some ideal, which is what the castle in the sky represents. The school, Ohtori Academy, represents a place where young people never grow up due to their inability to let go of something sacred, or because they can't move on. Miki (Sailor Mercury) wants Anthy because she reminds him of the fun times he had with his twin sister back when she was sweet and innocent. Juri (onion ring) feels unable to move on from her unrequited love Shiori. Touga (Knuckles) constantly puts up this facade of a prince to be the ideal man, when really, he has a lot of issues (in the movie, he's revealed to have been sold as a child and sexually abused), and Saionji (seaweed) is constantly trying to be better than Touga, but can't understand why he's not. Nanami (the blonde chick) really just wants her older brother's affection and thinks beating down others is the best way do do so, when really it just has the opposite effect. The whole deal with Professor Nemuro (white haired peep) is that he wanted to keep the boy alive because he had a crush on his older sister, because she was the first person to not treat him like a robot or some super genius. Akio (Anthy's older brother) manipulates him and his emotions, and even after killing all the boys and burning down the facility in deep frustration of having his affections not returned, he can't move on from what happened, which is why he's stuck in the school until Utena revolutionizes him and he graduates, leaving everyone's memory. In the final season, Utena and Anthy weren't really fighting over Akio...Anthy was upset that Akio was taking Utena away from her, and that, as his puppet, she had to obey him and hurt Utena, as well. Utena is very upset when she finds out Anthy has been abused to the point where she is made codependent on her brother, which almost leads Anthy to kill herself. They do, in the end, reach an understanding and console one another for what they've gone through, and go ahead to fight Akio after reaching this understanding. The final fight is incredibly painful, because even still, Anthy is manipulated by Akio, and forced to hurt Utena. But no matter what, Utena doesn't give up on her, because she loves Anthy too much to. She doesn't save her herself, but graduates from Ohtori Academy because she did cause a revolution within Anthy to be her own person rather than just a doll for her brother to use. Anthy in the end leaves the school to set out to look for Utena, and this time, Akio can't follow her, because he can't change or evolve, so that means he's trapped in the school. It's a gorgeous message about how she finally saved herself thanks to Utena's influence, and it's implied that in the end, she goes back in time to the beginning so Utena and her can be together, which is basically where the movie starts. Sure, the anime seems pretty nonsensical at times...hell, I had to look up analysis from other people to completely understand sometimes. But this anime is packed so deeply with meaningfulness and very dark themes under its magical girl, surrealistic guise.

Okay I think you need to take a closer look at the series. The reason that Anthy says that line while stabbing Utena in the back is because Utena continuously refuses to break out of that princely role, leading Anthy to have no choice but play along. Utena had literally just apologized to Anthy for being so wrapped up in her role of prince that she didn’t realize how much pain Anthy was in. Shouting “I’ll be a prince!” Right when shit gets rough shows she hadn’t really learned anything, so how could she truly save Anthy? Anthy peeped that shit and lost hope.

I think it would have been better if instead of stabbing Utena, Anthy just said something along the lines of "HEY UTENA!! Don't forget your promise! Don't save me as a lone Prince! Let's save my soul together! As princesses!" And then pulled some more swords out of her chest and joined the fight. Then after they win, Utena and Anthy leave the school and there's a scene of Utena, Anthy, and some other figure representing a therapist go inside Anthy's soul and pull a good majority of the swords out of it. And after that we could have some nice ending scene, with Utena and Anthy at their wedding or living together in a nice home. And it ends with a kiss. I think that could be swell.

no offense...I think you missed most the point of Anthy's character and the relationship between Utena, Anthy and Akio. I mean, I don't blame you I had to watch it multiple times and I read some analysis. Ok bare with me...first of all it's all about power dynamics, abuse cycles, teenagehood and adulthood. It uses fairytale tropes to explain the story and characters, which are very genderbased and, in the anime's worldbuilding itself, actually based on godlike and powerful beings (like Anthy and Dios). When Dios got sick from protecting all the women in the world and Anthy protected him by "hiding" Dios from humans and got stabbed for it, she basically sacrified herself and received humanity's hate for a fallen GodPrince who, realistically, couldn't be so darn perfect 24/7. This is the moment when she becomes "the witch" in people's eyes and the reason so many people abuse her, because she is receiving humanity's hate. On Dios' corner, this event caused him to lose his powers (I think it's sort of implied that it's because eventhough Anthy saved his reputation by sacrificing herself he knows that he isn't the perfect prince anymore) and both resents his sister and makes him feel guilty as hell for it. Anthy, on the other hand, feels guilty as well (and incredibly traumatized) and still loves her brother very much so, when Dios becomes Akio (assholery incarnated) and their relationship becomes twisted and abusive she submits to him because she feels that she must. So it's a strange power dynamic because Anthy is the one with all the power; responsible for creating the illusions of the arena and castle, transforming into other people and other magical things, but where Akio holds all the cards and calls the shots through abuse, guilt and manipulation. He orchestrates the whole plot and manipulates everyone so he can have a shot on regaining his "godprince" powers because the truth is, without Anthy, he is completely powerless, so he aims to control her by any means. Utena is a pawn in all of this, but Anthy and her actually develop feelings for one another, but there is the fact that Anthy is deeply traumatized and has interiorized all this fairytail sexism and, furthermore, in the 3rd season, when Akio sees that their bond is actually genuine and kind, he manipulated himself between them, seducing Utena and using her. Utena is a teenager, has white-knight syndrome and is being manipulated by Akio from the beginning, who represents "adulthood" and "maturity" (which is what he uses to manipulate every other theenager here, the big old pervert). To make things short, at the end Utena realises that this is all bullshit, that Akio is a complete asshole and making Anthy suffer needlessly just for his ego and realises that she ALSO was protecting her because of HER ego. So at the last battle when she is protecting her just because she is someone she loves and calls Akio on his crap, Akio starts fearing that he is going to lose and, at the same time, Anthy sees that and starts believeng in Utena for the first time (that's why Dios figure crumbles, because the whole thing is an illusion relying on Anthy's power, not Akio's). But not every is this easy, you can save a princess but only she can free herself, so she stabs Utena on the back because the academy, that world she created, is her coffin, her cage, but she feels safe in it since the outside world FUCKING STABBED HER 1 MILLION TIMES and Akio has been abusin her for centuries. So, you know "better the devil you know" and all that crap. The revolution happens when Utena, after everything manages to open her coffin AND when Anthy reaches for her since she accepts to get out of the coffin that was the whole cycle of abuse. That's why everything gets destroyed, because it's her power and she finally realises that she doen't have to take crap from her asshole rapist brother. Oh, also, Utena disappears from the academy because she "graduated" and left, meaning she became an adult and Akio can't prey on her anymore. It's implied that everyone there is trapped by Akio's design and Anthy's power because their teenage angst makes them esier to manipulate and use. So...yeah, Akio is basically Lucifer. And I could go on and on about all the other characters. Well that was long, sorry. English is not my first language, I hope I made myself understood. There are some very good analysis (better than mine) if you are interested :)

So...I feel you may have missed some of the context of this series, especially during the third act. Regarding Anthy, Akio, and Utena's triangle (as it most certainly is NOT three equally loving sides), Akio had been abusing and raping Anthy for years. Utena became a subject of Akio's lust, something he felt he should have control over. Eventually, he did coerce her into sleeping with him by using Anthy (barring the car scene in "The Barefoot Girl," since that does not explicitly reference sex as "The Prince Who Runs Through the Night does"), who sent Utena with Akio knowing his intentions. Throughout the course of the night, Utena is obviously increasingly uncomfortable, and during The Scene, tries to distract herself by talking about the following day's lunch. Neither Anthy nor Utena desire sexual relations with Akio. Anthy is powerless compared to her elder brother, who has conditioned her to follow his will. Utena lacks power as well, due to both the age difference, and her crush / infatuation on the smart, "star-loving" Akio. The moment Utena witnesses with Anthy and Akio is not through Anthy's jealousy, and the ensuing fight is not a quarrel over who gets to love Akio. Instead, it is Utena viewing Anthy's pain and torment, and realizing that she herself is unqualified to be her prince, so she avoids Anthy the subsequent day to avoid dealing with the issue. Anthy, on the other hand, takes Utena's avoidance as hatred (which, to be fair, is part of it; Utena does blame Anthy at first, but comes around), and reaffirming of everything Akio has instilled in her: her sins are HER fault, and not his. Also, to be fair, I feel some of your issues with the series are from taking everything at face value. It is not an incredibly complicated, multi-dimensional puzzle. Rather, it is a show laced with layer after layer of subtext and symbolism. Conversations are not just about what they are about, they are thematic. Scenes do not depict the direct action of the scene, but the representation of the action in a dramatized way. Symbols, both recurring and one-off, are everywhere (literally everything in the series could be metaphorical; a masterpiece of mise-en-scène, musical composition, and voice acting), abundant as roses in the garden. An edit (just made it to Anthy stabbing Utena): her line had nothing to do with marriage, and everything to do with agency. Earlier, during their fight post-reveal, Utena realized that her acting like a prince did nothing for Anthy. She was going to stand by Anthy forever, without the guise of a prince, but then, during the showdown with Akio, she relapsed into her former role. Anthy, seeing this as similar to Akio's younger person, and still under Akio's influence, decided that Utena could not rescue her like that. Indeed, she realized that no one could rescue her / be her prince. That is why the final lines, when Anthy leaves Akio, are so wonderful!! She takes control of herself, she has true agency, for the first time in the entire series (and her entire life, probably). Gone is the puppet of the Rose Bride, and born is Anthy Himemiya. It should also be noted that, though Utena was a catalyst for Anthy's freedom, she by no means saved her. Anthy had to choose, with her own power, to be free from Akio. Utena was able to see Anthy in her truest state (nude, within the coffin, hair down), finally understanding who she was and letting go of her (Utena's) own preconceptions about how Anthy should live. The disappearance of Utena is that she either graduated or dropped out of school. The school has been a representation of immaturity, the lack of freedom of being young and powerless. Anthy's rose garden functions as a perfect microcosm: it is a cage, within a cage; an enclosed, opaque (when viewed from without the arches) glass structure, shaped like a bird cage, and placed within a courtyard. Whenever it is shown from afar, there are arches / support structures from the school itself that make it seem even more closed off, as it is stuck in the heart of a school. Back to the school as a whole: students do not drive, students have ideals and aspirations, lofty ambitions that, to the mature, adult world, are preposterous and inconceivable. Students begin with a naivete much like Utena's (in the initial episodes), and become more cynical / jaded as time goes by. Some lose themselves, as Akio did, and chase after the unattainable long after (as Mikage) they should let go. Utena left behind stories, but is largely forgotten by those who do not wish to move on to a revolutionized world. Anthy and Utena both leave the school, embracing the adult world, and the revolution (they do have feelings for each other [see their picture, and just the entire series], and they both looked within themselves to solve their problems).

@@sinzones3909 I know it's off topic, but FLCL also needs multiple watches of you want to get the references. Requiring multiple watches is not that uncommon in anime. For Utena, it's not a matter of understanding what is happening (which you could call "main plot") but WHY it's happening and what drive the characters to this point. This is defenitely one of those anime where the fluff has more substance than the shell. ... But the fluff is good, you just need to rewatch it calmly. Now that you know what's happening in terms of main olaot, a second rewatch gives you time to read between the lines of the characters dialogue.

@@sinzones3909 Actually there is a lot that can be understood from utena from the first watch through by understanding that the story telling uses allegories and making connections throughout the series. Personally, I think that its isn't mandatory to rewatch the show as long as you are able to pick up on how the story is told. However, in order to truly understand every reference within the show it will take multiple rewatches. This does not mean its bad it just means that there is a lot of substance. @@sinzones3909 Utena's perfectly fine at conveying it's plot, it's more that there's smaller details that you'll miss on your first watch, or that will click with you after completing the series. The song that plays in the transformation sequence, 'Absolute Destiny Apocalypse' is a good example of this. At first I was like "Why the hell is it mentioning Shangri-La or Paradise Lost? I know what these mean on their own, but how does it relate to the story?". But then the latter clicked with me after Akio mentioned his name is derived from the Morning Star, aka Lucifer. In Paradise Lost, Lucifer laments over how beautiful the Garden of Eden is and that he can never truly experience it due to his fall from grace. Adam and Eve eating fruit from the Tree of Knowledge and thereby bringing about the Fall of Man, being exiled from the Garden, is the Original Sin and often seen as humanity's loss of innocence. For Akio, his former self as Dios represents that innocence he so desperately wants to go back to but can't, and although unlike Lucifer he actually wants to reclaim that innocence, he much like Lucifer can be interpreted as someone who decides instead to take the innocence of others through is various manipulations because of this. It's also no coincidence that Miki's piano piece is named 'The Sunlit Garden', named after his favourite childhood memory he has with his sister playing piano in their garden, it's representational of that kind of innocence only a child can have, and learning how to let go of that and to transition into adulthood is a big part of the emotional core of the series. Shangri-La is the name of a utopian lamasery from the book Lost Horizon, a book I've admittedly not read, but on the surface it at least can be seen as analogous to the Garden of Eden, they're both paradises, something is almost childlike about them which ties in perfectly with the fairy tale themes the series is going for.

"why does Anthy stab Utena", because she was controlled by Akio, she was only doing what Akio wanted her to do because she was stuck into her love for her brother from her childhood, when she got stabbed for him. It's also why he sleeps with her, to keep her bound to him and obeying him, as the movie makes more clear too. And "what about the cars?" The movie actually explains it best again. The cars are vehicles to travel far, to go somewhere. Utena turns into a car to bring Anthy away from her brother (the school) and to freedom (the world outside). In the series, the car scenes represent Akio corrupting the drives of the students for his ends, that's why every repeated ride scene ends up in a crash. They all sit in the car to be shown "something", or "the end of the world", meaning they get in to travel somewhere very far and fulfill their dreams, but instead Akio crashes them and makes them fight to actually complete the drive. The idea is they're so high from the drive they think they need to get Anthy to have more. Pretty obviously, they all want the power to change the world to make their "impossible" dreams come true. Hence why the main theme in the anime is forbidden desires and how the characters who fail the duels have to face their own. Including, finally, Utena herself.

It was based on a pre-WW2/WW1 German novel called "Demien" which was about two young boys witnessing the "end of the world" aka the end of the old European order. Utena takes that and then flips it on its head to talk about two young girls and the perils of going from adolescence and simplicity into the messy world of adulthood. There's all sorts of allegories you can draw from it but in general I like the idea that 1) Fairy Tales are way to simple and clean and binary ideals are inherently flawed (aka "You can only be a witch or a princess" / "You can only be a prince or a devil" / "Adulthood is fast cars and sex and cool stuff" 2) Annd... Anthy and Akio's eternally mucked up cycle of abuse brought on by Anthy refusing to let go of Dios and Akio refusing to let go of his lost power, housed in Anthy. This is finally broken by Utena recognizing she can't /save/ Anthy, she can only offer a hand so that Anthy can save herself. The revolution on the end was not Utena's. It was Anthy's, and it was Anthy deciding to leave her metaphorical coffin and go into the real world of adulthood and independence. The Black Rose Arc was effectively a dark mirror intended to show the reverse of Utena's values and to introduce the idea that Anthy's more than a victim - she herself is participating in manipulation. And that being unable to let go of the past (which holds true for all the characters) is toxic and will chain you to bad stuff. I could see the visual design in Steven Universe and the little nods to Utena, but that's about it. SU didn't get anywhere near the weirdness or the allegorical OMPH that Utena had. That's why it was so well-loved. And the lesbianism. There was indeed the lesbianism. eta: Whoops. Oh yeah, movie is a condensed version of the show which focuses more on "Utena is the vehicle (literal in this case) that Anthy uses to escape her abuse." It's the same theme, but not the same universe. And Touga's rape in the movie is probably just because it wasn't shown in the series. It's less allegorical and a missing piece explaining why Touga sees sex as power and control, and why he was so easily preyed upon by Akio.

If you genuinely did pick up on absolutely everything right away with no outside input, then great. But.... I'm a little doubtful of that. It's just disingenuous to say that the story is "pretty straightforward" and to pretend there arent moments of the storytelling in RGU that are genuinely jarring and strangely chosen even if you know what the creators' intended message was.

Okay this is extremely incorrect in many parts of your explanation. I was there for the original run of the anime and all the fandom. This is a great anime. It analyzes the corruption of childhood innocence as the allure and inevitability of adulthood begin to warp of childhood experiences, memories, and wants. Can the purity of a child dreams (their nobility) survive the battles of life. Akio represents the complete corruption of adulthood. He seeks to control everything and everyone. Often using seduction and manipulation to achieve his goals. Anthy is not an actual bride to be passed around. She makes herself a lifeless doll in order to deceive the contestants into believing that they will receive the power of Dios. The plan was always to harness someone’s pure nobility to free Anthy’s soul and break the seal she placed on Akio’s godlike power to make wishes into reality. She is no more a “bride” than an Olympic gold medalist is the gold medal they wear. She blames herself for Akio’s corruption and simply seeks an end to her own suffering. Akio uses Anthy’s guilt to control her and dominate her mentally and sexually. The students and faculty (that’s rarely seen) are the villagers whose hatred and greed didn’t only imprison Anthy but themselves as well. So Anthy takes their abuse but she also hates them for punishing her for saving her brother. So using the powers she possesses as a witch she creates a lot of subtle payback. Anthy sent the cursed cowbell. She caused the body swaps. She magicked the animals to appear during their study session with Utena, Miki, and Nanami. I will admit that a lot of this becomes clearer on a second re-watch. Which I know many will say it’s a flaw and that you shouldn’t have to watch twice to understand its themes and character motivations. Enjoy the beautiful art work and just have fun in the bizarre world and shenanigans. Through all this it’s Utena that shows Anthy and many others that the power of Dios wasn’t needed to grant their wishes.

The castles that you said that no student ever notices, is located inside the forbidden Forrest. It is explained from the very first episode that no student has access to it. Only the members of what you called the fight club, aka the student council,aka the selected duelists. So why would a student mention something they've never seen? To make things even more clear the castle, as is explained in the last season, is an illusion produced by a machine. Everything that takes place in the arena is an illusion. And it's not like the duelists never wondered what the fuck that castle was doing here. Utena mentions how weird it is and has a discussion about it with Saionji. Also,the whole point of this anime is that some people just don't grow up from their childhood beliefs about the world. For example, Utena's childish belief is that women need saving from a prince. Only after she realizes in the last episode that women actually have the power to protect themselves and she abandones her obsessive belief that becoming a self-sacrificing prince is her life purpose she is able to free herself from her childish prejudice and grow up,thus she disappears from the school. The school is a metaphor for our childhood stereotypes. Only a person that gets over them can leave the school ,and thats why Nemuro,Utena and Anthy are seen escaping the school. Because the grew up intellectually. This whole series is metaphor, a storyline full of symbolism. I get it if you don't like symbolic artwork ,and prefer literal art.But to claim that it's nonesense because you can't figure out the correlation of symbolism and reality is a little disrespectful to this artwork. The storyline ark for each and every character is a symbolic exploration of their respective childhood biased prenotion,of their prejudice and biased beliefs that they subconsciously carry with them since their childhood because they haven't even realised yet that they even carry them. They haven't gone through their mental puberty yet to critically question their own fixated beliefs. If you watch the series with more concentration and read some analysis articles about it you might see that you missed a tone of things the first time. For example, there is an episode in the series where Akio manipulates and sexually exploits Utena,a minor, and I didn't even notice the rape(because essentially it is rape) for a whole month after I had watched the series. It took a video analysis of this episode on the RU-vid for me to understand what had happened in it. Because this series never shows you what literally happened. It either symbolises it or implies it. And that's nice because it provokes more thinking. Also, about professor Nemuro, I'll explain what his deal was and why he wanted to kill the Rose bride: In the past he was a computer genius that could experience no real emotions. Then he gets a job in a project that basically aims on finding a way to achieve immortality. While on this project he forms a real human connection with Tokiko(who treats him like a real person and not some freaky genius robot)and her little brother Mamiya,a boy terminally ill,for whom they try to find the secret of immortality. So professor Nemuro comes up with the idea that "If I kill the Rose Bride and then give her role to Mamiya ,who is dying ,he will become immortal and we will live happily ever after as a family." The series then reveals that that's not possible because Mamiya is already dead,died in a fire actually set by Nemuro, and Nemuro doesn't remember that. The series also portraits Nemuro as not having aged a single day because for so long he was trapped in his memories of the past. Because that's what happens to the students of this school,they don't grow up mentally and they physically don't age (the physical part is for symbolic reasons). Nemuro only accepts the past for what it is after he duels Utena,and remembers it. And that allows him to grow up from his obsessive fixated beliefs and actually escape the school. That's why his memory of ever being a student in this school is deleted from everyone else's mind ,because all the other students haven't grown up yet to understand what happened to Nemuro,and that's why they are not ready to escape the school yet. The second season of the series, even though it seems like it serves no purpose at first in actuality it helps in the storytelling, as it helps us understand what is about to happen in the upcoming last episode of the series to Anthy. Without this season the viewer would have never realised that Anthy escaped,nor why escaping and leaving the school was such a big deal to begin with. We wouldn't have noticed that people in this Academy don't age, that they remain trapped. And Anthy's departure,as said, would seem like an insignificant fact, when in reality it is the whole point of the anime. Finally,the revolution that Utena brought is that she helped Anthy grow up,provoking a revolution in her childish beliefs. And it is implied in the end that more students will follow her lead,and escape their childish prejudices ,even after they forget Utena's memory,because Utena's final duel marked the beginning of the Revolution,that is called maturity. ps: I hope my comment is not rude,I actually found the video very funny. But I think you missed the point by observing secondary things.

SKU has to be watched like a long dream, where things make sense in an emotional or aesthetic way. There's no point asking questions as if it could happen in real life. Anime was a lot more subversive in the '90s, both as a language and for the themes explored. Sometimes to the point of obscurity or trauma conga, but I kinda miss those times. Evangelion couldn't be made nowadays.

Its a metaphor for patriarchy and growing out of the oppressive ideas of men and women (princes and princesses) we get from fairytales. It took me a bit to figure it out but not taking most of it literally is key. It’s told almost entirely though metaphor.

I know Utena is a complex show to grasp, especially in the later arcs. Still, this review shows such a fundamental misunderstanding of the ideas and metaphors that make this show brilliant. you can't take it at face value. it seems like you've looked only at what was explicitly shown on screen and failed to take any time out to think about what is actually going on. I really recommend watching other analyses of this show, and maybe going back to it someday, because it really is one of the most fundamental pieces of media from the last 30 years.

Welcome to a Kunihiko Ikuhara' anime where things get really weird! In all seriousness, I think you misread the anime and took everything at face value too much. The anime uses dream logic, so everything is super symbolic and has an underlining meaning to it. Honestly, the anime makes far more sense when you look at things in that sort of context than a literal one.

Utenas revolution isn’t about social change at all! It’s about a) breaking cycles of abuse, and b) taken literally, it’s making the world “revolve”, as in making time pass! Himemiya has been living this “life” for decades. The ancient burned down school from snow whites backstory is one hint. So Utena is taking himemiya out of her shell, and triggered a series of changes shown in the movie. But it’s up to Hime, the survivor of all this abuse, to end the loop completely and save her savior so it’s a mutual relationship of respect and not ownership. Or at least that’s what I think, the show is Oops! All metaphor

Oof, yeah, maybe watching this show with something like Josei Next Door's Utena for Newbies episode recaps would've helped parse this, but...yeah, there's a lot of stuff that you've taken at face value that's meant to be metaphorical/allegorical, and not in relation to the manga (which goes in the complete opposite direction thematically). But to make it really, really short, Utena and Anthy are breaking free of the patriarchy that traps them in roles like "Witch", "Princess", and/or "Prince". Anthy leaves and Utena "dies" because they are self-actualizing by leaving behind the literal fairy-tale trappings of Ohtori for the "real" world (at least until the movie where Anthy has to save Utena, who's still trapped in the role of a "Prince").

I feel like a lot of the symbolism was lost with you, the part you blame Anthy for sleeping with Akio and reading it as a sort of... love jealously thing is not it. She's being manipulated and abused by her brother and you did not talk about that well at all. For the series there isnt really further context, the series is begging to be analyzed and cant truly be enjoyed without that analysis. From my observations (and i could be totally wrong but this is what ive gathered overtime!) -The school they attend represents childhood itself and childhood wonder. The outside world is the "adult world", in the movie the "adult world" looks almost apocalyptic. Anthy and Utena leave the safety of their childhood to the turmoil of adulthood. The adult world represents freedom and independence. Utena literally turns into Anthy's vehicle to escape and become free. -Cars are typically used to represent a glimpse or a gateway to adulthood, since in real life that's many teen's first time truly not needing to rely on an adult. I'm not quite sure about them on the battle arena but Akio takes the students on car rides, in a way giving a glimpse to this other world, so I think the cars on the arena represent that, a glimpse. -The way that people are able to pull swords from their chest represents a relationship manifested, whether is a platonic, romantic, abusive (because I can say for sure some of the characters paired together for those fights are not in a healthy relationship in any form), etc. It represents an amount of trust. Anthy herself trusts whomever wins her, since she has been manipulated to do so for so long by Akio and others around her. But other characters have to build that trust and be shown by Akio how to do so (I guess he does that on the car rides lmao). -There's alot more to it but all of the stuff that appears on the battlefields has some relevance to the characters. With the black rose arc Kanae (Akio's fiancé) has a lot of lilies on the battlefield, lilies themselves represent commitment, femininity and such. Which relates back to her being committed to Akio. There's so much more I could say but! Yeah! Hope this helps anyone trying to understand what the hell is happening in this anime.

I think you really misunderstood the anime and take it at face value way too much. I'm not going to leave a very long comment explaining why you're wrong, but I'll point something out. Everything about the visuals are designed to make you question the validity of whats going on at a surface level. Take the student council meetings for example: every time they meet up, there are ludicrous things going on, but they're completely unacknowledged by the characters. Random balloons, baseball games, desk fans that move to whoever's in frame. They are meant to demonstrate the unreliability of the facts visually presented, as all of these things are inherently absurd and cannot logically occur. But they also can have great meaning - take Touga and Saionji's discussion about Akio, in which there's suddenly a podium with a dozen microphones, reporters, cameras flashing and taking pictures. It's meant to represent the pressure that Akio is putting on Touga to fulfill a similar role to him, and continue being being a Duelist as well as bowing to the system that they operate under. The system that Akio is meant to represent, and the meaning of said system lies with your interpretation. I would highly suggest you take some time to observe the meaning that the show is trying to communicate to you. It's a very enjoyable show under this lens, and I don't think you've given it a fair chance. Some other stories I'd recommend that take a more metaphorical approach to storytelling are the 2018 film Annihilation, the 2019 film Midsommar, and the 2000 anime series FLCL.

Ummm, I know you've said multiple times that you don't understand what's going on in the story, but maybe I can explain at least the purpose of Anthy and her relationship both to Utena and Akio. Because I think you're doing her character and the way she's written a diservice. She's didn't sleep with him to spite Utena. Anthy is a victim of rape and abuse by his brother. His brother tries to make Utena fall inlove with him, so the revolution won't happen and Utena doesn't get Dios's power. Anthy has been conditioned to be that "lifeless doll" by her brother and the curse set upon her, because that's the role a woman should fulfill in his eyes. To be a submissive "princess". Utena attempts to grant her individuality by keeping her safe from the other duelists, so Akio manipulates both of them into fighting. 3 season isn't really a feud between them, it's about Anthy feeling relentless guilt over still wanting to help her brother (her abuser) because of her love for him, and also too feel regret by allowing Utena to fall on his clutches, but also jealousy because she's now with Akio (which is all she has and all she ever had.) Anthy is an abuse victim that is in process to be liberated, who is conditioned to be the way she is, that's why sometimes her characters seems nonsensical, but she isn't.

Anthy stabs Utena because like any person in an abusive relationship. It's scary for them to leave. When anthy reaches for Utena's hand before falling at the end, that was Anthy's first step to accepting "help" and Utena dissapeared from AKIOS worls. She's in the outside world now. (normal) and away from the abusive, manipulative cycle that was Othori Academy. Anthy will join Utena in the end, and they will shine together. (be a couple) confirmed by creator. The problem was, they didn't let him draw any kissing scenes or overly romantic scenes with Utena and Anthy back then. Even though Anthy and Utena are meant to be the shows main couple. Hence, the movie was created a couple years later and HE WENT ALL OUT!!! It was almost like a second chance for him to include the things he couldn't in the TV show. In the end Utena and Anthy leave together and share a kiss.

bit of an emotional rant incoming; i used to watch this user's other reviews on cartoons and used to enjoy their content years ago. i hadn't seen utena before watching this video, so my perception of the series was initially and completely muddled by this review. luckily, i ended up watching the series for myself down the line anyway after having watched more competent creators pick it apart (tho i havent gotten around to analysing it on my own, more just going "huh, i can see what :insert creator: mean" as i watched it). some stuff went over my head, but i ended up resonating with the messages anyway, especially as someone who was groomed in their teens and dealing with misogyny. it's sad that most people who didn't bother watching the series will have a horrible view on it thanks to seeing this godawful video. OP should seriously consider remaking it. while i emphasize with being a casual viewer who may take things as face value at times, that doesn't mean you can't improve your media analysis or critical thinking skills. maybe OP should consider why they got so much backlash in the first place instead of carelessly putting the video back up as if nothing happened.

I laughed my ass off over the whole analysis, but it was a mix between genuely hilarious jokes, and also the fact that the show's symbolism jumped way over your head. And also just the literal plot. Telling that the show doesn't explain who the strange child in the second arc is WHILE showing the scene of the kid turning into Anthy by the magic of a jump cut was not the best move. o_o. Also, I'm pretty certain the show is implying the shadow girls' play is stated to be based on a legend, implying that Dios/Akio and Anthy are actually centuries years old, making any dynamic with those two even creepier and explaining how much their abusive, incestuous couple came to be: Anthy has felt guilt and is trapped in a cycle of torment for centuries, having abandonned all self-respect until Utena makes her realizes that Akio isn't the prince he was anymore and that she should simply leave him, being the revolution propheticed, just not in the way Akio expected it to be. Hence Utena becoming a car in the movie: she is *literraly* the vehicle for Anthy's escape from an abusive past and into an healthier relationship. (No idea about the car symbolism related to Akio in the anime, though).

okay this is going to be a long ass comment but god you missed out on so much of the point so im going to add in my two cents 1:37 - rgu throws its characters into fairytale roles to both fit into the shoujo genre that it's deconstructing and make commentary about gender. they fit utena into the role of princess because it's a binary and gendered role - rgu subverts gender in many ways and utena being categorized as a princess is important to both a.) showing her compulsory heterosexuality. the princess role, since it's usually paired off with a prince (in this case, dios or akio), is being used to emphasize that and b.) later, showing us that it was a princess all along that motivated utena and "brought her out of the coffin" (seeing anthy suffering). 2:09 - brushing it off as just "1900s anime" kind of kills me because one of the big points of rgu is condemning abusers and pedophilia/groomers as well as the culture that allows young girls to BE groomed. akio and touga are probably the biggest examples i can think of, and they represent different facets of abuse as well - akio is an abuser straight out, he manipulates almost everyone in the main cast at some point (that's what the point of every single car scene is) but his abuse centers mostly around anthy and utena. touga is a victim of akio's grooming and abuse, but instead of breaking that cycle he chose to be an abuser as well, grooming nanami. anthy and utena break that cycle of abuse. 4:58 - "hit on by the prince" not really right... akio is orchestrating all of this, and i DEFINITELY wouldn't call him emotionally manipulating and grooming all these kids hitting on them. a nitpick, but something that rubs me the wrong way. 5:14 - calling anthy wet cardboard or the like is my BIGGEST pet peeve with utenanalysis. she is a victim of abuse. she has been under akio's control for her whole life, passed around like a hot potato in this system of duels, and betrayed by the entire world. i think i'd probably be pretty quiet and become kind of a people pleaser if that was my life situation too. plus, anthy has so much characterization, it's just in much quieter ways than utena's, because that's the nature of anthy. she has these little moments every so often where she shows her genuine self (think - the scene with the snails and the octopus in the closet, im still fully convinced she was just fucking with nanami there), and a lot of smaller actions (when her glasses go opaque, the conversation on the rooftop, etc) lend to so much of a deeper characterization. its kind of easy to miss the first time around and subsequent times if you arent really looking for it, but anthy just... is a victim of abuse. she's developed the personality she has as a result of her life situation. and calling her wet cardboard is missing all of her characterization, which sucks. i know you elaborate on this later, around the 10 minute mark but... jesus. 6:41 - i'm still dissecting mikage myself honestly so i don't have much to say here, but... i think mikage sets akio up in a way. recall the elevator scenes - the emotional manipulation done there is very reflective of the manipulation akio utilizes in the recurring car scenes, and the manipulation in his relationship to utena. it's much more drawn out in the latter situation, but i think mikage kind of sets us up to realize that, if nothing else. it strikes me as dismissive to call him a filler or w/e. and as for the duelists - so many of their arcs further characterize the main cast. kozue contextualizes miki. kanae characterizes anthy and akio. shiori characterizes juri (and if im recalling her episode right, makes great commentary on compulsory heterosexuality). etc. 7:14 - mikage wants to make mamiya the rose bride so he has the ability to gain the "something eternal" hinted out without having to defend him against the other duelists and becaue iirc he still is stuck in the idea of saving mamiya utilizing the "something eternal" 8:23 - mikage probably sees mamiya as resembling anthy because he idealizes anthy, or, more accurately, anthy's powers and ability to gain eternity. thats also why in that scene you clipped later, mamiya briefly turns into anthy. 10:25 - AKIO IS GROOMING THEM. THEY WERE FIGHTING BECAUSE UTENA DIDNT UNDERSTAND THAT A.) SHE WAS BEING GROOMED B.) ANTHY WAS ALSO A VICTIM OF SAID GROOMING AND C.) DESPITE UTENA'S BEST INTENTIONS TO BREAK ANTHY OUT OF THE CYCLE OF DUELS OR CYCLE OF ABUSE, UTENA ENDED UP PERPETUATING IT BY BEING A PART OF IT. a major message of rgu is that abusive systems cannot be taken down from within. you have to LEAVE said system before you want to dismantle it. utena was getting close to akio, and anthy was scared for both utena's and her own safety because she recognized akio was grooming utena and couldnt do anything about it, was worried that utena would drift to akio's side and become an abuser, and was rightfully angry that utena continued to perpetuate and partake in the system that abused her for so long. holy shit. (posting so i don't lose this long essay lol. continuing in a reply)
@hazendir
@hazendir 4 года назад
(2/?) 12:31 - another nitpick perhaps, but it annoys me that you seem to pass off shiori and nanami especially as just "bitches" because while yes, they did some shitty things, their characters have a lot more nuance... nanami was groomed by her brother, and shiori is a MESS of internalized homophobia (she and juri are kind of meant to parallel anthy and utena, in a way). 13:05 - nanami's feelings towards touga are, as i mentioned before, pretty much innocent. the only one who really sexualize their encounters are touga (who is grooming her), and outsiders (i.e. miki, who was projecting his feelings towards kozue. miki get therapy). nanami's innocent feelings are revealed by imagery and most damningly by the way she reacts to walking in on akio r*ping anthy. she sees that and is rightfully scared (even though she misunderstands the situation somewhat), and repeatedly makes it known to utena that she thinks anthy and akio are disgusting for doing that (which - anthy isn't at fault, it's all akio, but i'm using the words nanami did). and as far as her relationship to tsuwabuki - this is a product of her repeating what touga has taught her, or at least that's how i interpreted it. i havent done much analysis into that front yet theres so much to dissect in this show lol 14:30 - ruka is a shitty shitty man who mostly exists to further the character arc of juri and shiori. the reason he steals juri's necklace is because its super important to her and he's manipulating her. also homophobia, and if i recall correctly, the threat of outing her? 15:10 - again feel the need to emphasize that akio is grooming the both of them 16:15 - also want to point out that a big reason for reused animation is that rgu had a fairly low budget if im remembering right? and in my opinion that reused animation is often used pretty artistically or symbolically. and the car scenes are akin to the elevator scenes in s2, they provide depth to the thoughts of the characters, emphasize akio's manipulation of everyone, and give a whole heap of meaning to certain interactions 16:45 - i interpreted the cars in the movie at least as symbolic of the vehicle by which to escape the system. in the movie, utena provides a way for anthy to get out, but ultimately anthy is the one who has to leave herself. anthy breaks the cycle. 18:00 - you've gotta look at this one metaphorically. akio represents the societal idea that women are always the rescued, cannot help themselves without a man, etc. but akio, who represents this idealized "prince" figure, is a horrific abuser, just as this societal idea ultimately harms women. another theme of rgu is women forming strong bonds with other women is key to breaking out of patriarichal and heteronormative systems, and the bond between utena and anthy represents that idea. and as for the "men's royal prince"... that isn't the point of rgu. we're talking about BREAKING male dominated and abusive systems, not what-abouting men into that. 19:50 - trauma and heteronormativity is a bitch (continued)
@hazendir
@hazendir 4 года назад
(3/3) i'm kind of losing braincells ive been analyzing for a long time so pardon me if this one is less articulate than the others 20:08 - as mentioned before, anthy was rightfully mad at utena for perpetuating the system of abuse for so long instead of helping her leave and breaking it, and i interpret this scene as a combination of that, anthy being scared to leave the only thing she knows, and still being under akio's influence because he's abused and manipulated her for so long. esp the line about "you remind me so much of dios when i loved him" - she's terrified of just being abused again. dios turned into akio. dios turned into an abuser. she's scared that utena has the potential to as well. this is a big moment of characterization for anthy. she's not a perfect idealized abuse victim, she's more realistic. also the "you can't marry me, you're a girl" - internalized homophobiaaaa!! (source: i'm a lesbian) 23:20 - man touga was so much less of an ass in the movie because nanami wasn't around to SHOW how much of an ass he was but because of his show characterization ~i can't trust him.~ also, touga hasn't been dead this whole time. the movie is a loose retelling of the anime, it's practically a different canon. anime touga is very much alive and a bitch. 24:32 - "textbook example of a prince!" just want to point that out, as akio's outer appearance is very much emphasized by the movie to be charming and is again, a parallel to The Patriarchy (tm) as i mentioned earlier 25:00 - anthy is not fine with it! she was ~groomed!~ im so glad akio died in the movie lol. and again, akio was alive in the anime, very much so, i think. same thing as earlier w touga. and also about the cars - explained them earlier too 26:20 - as i mentioned previously i JUST watched the movie a couple days ago so im still processing it and am confused as to why shiori turned into a car as well but i think its another thing with how she and juri parallel anthy and utena, and there's probably something to be said about how the lack of a driver (juri) is why she ultimately crashed but i dont know how to articulate my thoughts on the meaning behind that one quite yet 27:20 - the student council background imagery all means something! it's been a bit since i watched the main series and i didnt do a deep analysis on how the symbolism there fits into the greater context of the show but i promise you it's there for a reason. i guess ill drop a fun fact instead - there's a theory out there that whenever miki stops his watch, it's a japanese number pun/goroawase! i.e. inthe first episode it stops on 3:12 which could be a play on saionji etc. 28:07 - the nanami episodes are really funny i agree but there is something to be said about how they characterize both anthy and nanami - for the former, im thinking specifically of the curry episode, how there's a theory anthy used her ~witch powers~ to switch bodies with utena because she just wanted to leave her body for a day, or at least enjoyed that bodyswitch because of the suffering she goes though. and for nanami, im thinking of the egg episode, how it can be read as an allegory for a shit ton of things - being gay and mensturation are the biggest theories ive seen. they characterize nanami as well as cover a bigger societal concept in a smaller container than the full series itself. they might be more "filler" than the other episodes but they absolutely still have their value. i dont know what the cow episode means though but theres something. probably (end)

not to be three years late to this but. wow. you really missed the entire point. not everything is literal. you said yourself that theres a lot of symbolism in utena and thats the *point.* nearly everything in this anime is symbolism. a lot of the things you critiqued (is it fair to call it critique when you're making uninformed accusations of "bad writing" without doing the bare minimum of. understanding the message that is being told through symbols and allegory rather than through an in your face narrative?) as being nonsensical are quite literally just not happening. akio is not literally driving these kids to the end of the world and then tossing himself onto the hood of the car -- there is something else that is going on that is being symbolised by the car rides. and also like. i get it. they look like theyre adults. but even the oldest of these schoolkids is not more than fucking 17. anthy and utena are fucking fourteen! anthy and utena are not "fighting over akio", they are children and abuse victims undergoing a series of horrible experiences.

It's all one big symbolic metaphor bro. Princes are a sterotype all people need to falling into. It's not realistic to help all girls and spreading yourself too thin. The car represents adulthood and growing up as you go further. The adolescence of Utena is just that 'adolescence'. Anthy drives Utena to become better and Utena is the vehicle for her escape her life. They need each other.

my theory of Utena is that Anthy was indeed a witch who had a brother which she had a unhealthy devotion to, and it the anime talks about the witch and the prince but i forgot exactly the exact story(is been a few years since i last watched it), but it boils down to having a lingering issue and wishing that the world would be a different place then Anthy creates this magical place to protect his brother. the brother then invites people in the same situation as them and makes them fight in the hopes one of them would ever hold the power to change things so he could use it for himself. that's why everyone in this school is so messed up, even Utena herself has lingering issue was that she was afraid of death and find life pointless because of that. Utena however meets a prince who shows her something eternal which changed Utena into the tomboy prince we know... except that most likely never happened and Utena is just putting a face to deal with all her issues. the shadow puppets are Utena true feelings that shows the detachment she has about everything. in the end in Utena's fight with Akio, he assumes that Utena died and did not cause a revolution to happen. but actually Utena caused a revolution, because of her relationship with Anthy she came into terms about her mortality and detachment while Anthy gets over the codependency with her brother, and then both leave that world.

What the shit,, it was implied that Akins been forcing Anthy to do this, it even expressly shows it. She’s shown to love her brother, but he abuses that love she has for her to take advantage of her sexually and emotionally. I mean I think the metaphors really point toward that anyways, I mean who know I might be wrong but I’ve rewatched the show like 5 times.

This was amusing! But I see you didn't understand some parts. Like the love triangle between Raspberry bitch, onion rings, and Sonic. Sonic loves onion rings, and came back to school from the hospital one last time to help onion rings get over/free her from raspberry bitch. In the end Sonic succumbs to his illness. It's actually a really beautiful episode to me and one of my favorite parts in the anime. I think you will enjoy it much more if you watch it again. I watched it 2x, and there's so much more to see that you didn't see the first time.

While hilarious, I find it sad that most American's cannot separate reality and metaphorical fiction. To most American's, if it does not make sense in the world they can see and feel they cannot understand it. This is strange because most American ancestry comes from cultures with metaphorical god figures. I suppose this was lost in the modern culture of absolutism. Problem is, the human soul lives in metaphors both spoken and visual. If you cannot connect with the meaning of metaphorical fiction, how can you ever even hope to understand yourself let alone an authors true intent? There are aspects of the human soul that cannot be expressed properly in everyday reality. Concepts and ideas are born of the fog of metaphor.

Basically yes this anime is super weird but I think if the ending like this: Anthy was stuck in a loop, being forced to be the Rose Bride. Utena saves her so Anthy can leave the loop but sacrifices herself. In the end Utena was an outsider who wasn’t meant to exist in the loop aka the school and was erased. Anthy who is free now is the only one who faintly remembers her and goes to look for Utena. I believe that if Utena is dead or not is left open for the viewer to decide. If you want another mind fuck go watch Mawaru Penguin Drum. It’s directed by Kunihiko Ikuhara, same person as Revolutionary Girl Utena, came out in 2011, had a bigger animation budget, and it may or may not be more ridiculous.

I've heard it said that the movie could possibly be a continuation of the series, but I see it as more of a retelling that's completely separate from the anime, and for sanity's sake it's probably best to view them as two separate entities. As for all the craziness and seemingly magical events that happen in the series, it's true that 'Utena' uses very dreamlike/fairy tale logic to tell its story, but a more literal explanation might be Anthy herself. She's called a witch several times throughout the series, but maybe it's not simply a metaphor... maybe she IS an actual, literal witch with magical abilities, whether she's conscious of it or not. This explains why everything strange that happens has a subconscious, random, dreamlike feel to it, and why some of the most insane batshit weirdness happens to Nanami (like the cow thing), a person who's largely antagonistic towards Anthy. At least that's one theory I've heard.

one of the core themes of utena is that you can't always save people, in fact it is inherently selfish to think so. the reason why utena turns into the car is because anthy has to be the one to choose to save herself and break the cycle of abuse. hence the car metaphor because anthy has to choose whether or not to drive the car and escape the cycle of abuse
@wygolvillage2637
@wygolvillage2637 Год назад
Cars are a metaphor for adulthood and independence. That's also why Akio drives a car, it represents the power he holds over the child characters as the only prominent adult character in the show. Utena turning into a car (and Anthy driving her) are a step into adulthood- getting a driver's license itself is an important milestone for a young adult. So, by transitioning from the stifled childhood of Ohtori (what was that thing Akio said, where if you stay in school forever you never grow old?) into the independent car/driver, they gain the perspective needed to escape, and the trust needed to get there. But being a driver also means you have to choose to drive- Anthy has to choose to escape, just like in the show. We see a lot of cars without drivers (and thus, keys) in the movie, and none of them make it to the outside world. A car without its key (trust, consent, love) is stuck, and goes to rust. That's my take on it, though.

Wow this is the worst reading of this show I've ever seen but I can't even blame you because the first half fucking convinces you this is going to be normal and you can read it at face value, and if you don't pick up the hints that there's more under the surface you end up taking everything the series is critiquing as things the series is affirming

There is subtle hinting in the anime that Anthy is actually a manipulator and that she is the source of most the conflict in the entire series. What I got from the series was that the revolution was Utena finally convincing Anthy to stop living for manipulating others and to live for her own happiness instead.
@user-zk3jn7hf1c
@user-zk3jn7hf1c 2 года назад
i dont think she wanted to manipulate anyone. she was powerless and terrified of her brother. given what happened to her every week for god knows how long, its no wonder she is kind of an empty husk of a person who akio manipulates to do his bidding

I always interpret that the world's revolution was some idealistic solution to the main characters problems. So, instead of facing the problem they got trapped into a idealized world where children played prince and swordfighting. Utena realized that after releasing Anthy. She couldn't be the prince cause never there was one. In the end Utena, did revolutionize the world by simply going out of that crazy place and facing her problems like a grow up, instead of seeking out some shiny and pretty. So, like the boy who died drowned, Utena brought the revolution and changed the views of her colleagues, who started to look up for their own revolution, even though they don't seem to remember her anymore. ... Man, I love this anime.
