WTH is wrong with Jeep? In a word, it's Hubris.
They've believed people will pay whatever they charge for the "Jeep" name for too long, and falling sales have executives scrambling!

Great vid, Jon. I think you hit all the points - I like to say they overshot the mark with their pricing. I'd read somewhere that they want to be Lexus/Land Rover in terms of perception and price point, specifically with the Grand Wagoneer - they're simply not and never have been. Plus all the quality problems they've always had and are seemingly worse over the last couple of years, including with the GW - Stellantis and their former namesakes had a niche in terms of price, they were always the lowest cost of the big three American companies - and that worked for them. They built some cool looking stuff that was priced reasonably but generally didn't age well - and most folks understood what they were getting at those price points. Now they're overpriced and don't age well - a recipe for disaster. If you look right now at both the CDJR dealers and used car lots - there are Jeeps overflowing all the sales lots and it seems no one is buying, especially at the inflated prices all are asking....

Jeep has really lowered its standards if it's trying to compete with Land Rover which is owned by Tata Motors Group. Land Rover has a significant history of poor reliability so from that perspective Jeep fits right in. If Jeep is shooting for being a "status symbol" vehicle like Land Rover, Mercedes, BMW etc, then it's a huge mistake on Jeep's end. The Jeep brand has historically never been considered to be or categorized as a "status brand" and quite frankly they should avoid going down that path. Jeep was built on the rugged outdoors, go anywhere mentality something that really no other automaker could come close to. Jeep should go back its roots and build quality off-roaders that can go anywhere and stop mucking around in the status brand genre.

Pricing is the problem. I bought 2020 JL and there were deals a plenty and rates on three year financing were 1.99% at the time. Ending up getting like 6k off the price at year end close out. Was a happy clam. 4 years later and still love it. Not built terribly well but good enough for the price **I ** paid. It simply is not good enough for the current pricing. I wouldn’t even consider buying again at todays pricing as the value just isn’t there. It needs to be atleast 20% cheaper to be ballpark reasonable. Bronco released certainly killed off a huge chunk of sales too. You can have a pricier vehicle with low finance/lease rates but you can’t have a pricier vehicle with very high interest rates at the same time.

Thanks for your reporting - this confirms my suspicions.... To set this up; My son's 2018 Wrangler JLUR (Unlimited - meaning 4-door - Rubicon for those not familiar) has been problematic from the get-go. We bought it used w/ 47K miles for far too much in 2021 - the peak of used car pricing (price matched the mileage!). This was when he graduated college, and he needed new wheels to get to his new job because my old rusting Mazda 6 hatchback wasn't safe anymore. And, of course, he HAD TO HAVE A WRANGLER (was his life-long dream). It's all image to him - he'll probably never rock crawl with his new 35" tires and the electronic front anti-roll bar. Meanwhile, it's already had electrical issues, never mind the leaking right rear LED taillight it came with and eventually cost us $800 to replace. Starting out right away, we had an engine light where multiple dash lights came on, triggering many OBD II codes and system lockouts for stop/start, power steering, VSC and more. The Jeep dealer charged $350 to change a silly $20 CAN bus connector. I was convinced they knew what the problem was and fixed it in 10 minutes but charged us that much anyway. Grr! Had an engine light for "small vapor leak", and it ended up being the stupid charcoal canister purge valve. The canister on the older model JK was under the car, you didn't even need ramps. The new one requires rear passenger wheel removal, wheel housing splash guard removal, and pulling out the canister to access the valve. Another PITA. Had a random cylinder 3 misfire for a while. Changed that coil and plug, we'll see if that lasts. In the process of doing that I found oil seepage from seals around things poking out of the valve covers, meaning pressure build up, so I replaced the PCV valve (at about 70K miles and yes it was very sticky) which was foolishly located on the rear end of the passenger side valve cover, facing the firewall. That required lots of swearing, cuts on my hands, and an innovative use of pry bars and wood blocking to get enough forward pressure on the valve to compress the o-ring enough to be able to rotate the valve into position. TERRIBLE engineering. Oh, and I found a rodent chewed wire running from behind the battery toward the front of the bay. It was chewed near the positive battery terminal. The wires were wrapped in cloth-type electrical tape, and the red and orange wires inside were thin and the insulation fragile. Who knows what those wires were for. I had to strip, splice, solder and re-tape them. PITA. Now he's moved to San Diego, the engine light is back and so is the light showing a loose gas cap. I'm not there to work on it so off to the dealer if I can get him to actually make an appointment. We recently visited him out there, and noticed his AC was not cooling. He said "Oh yeah that started last week"... I poked around - the AC compressor spins by hand - with the engine off of course - so it's not seized. But the clutch does not engage even though the cooling system fans go into overdrive when the AC button is pushed. Seems electrical and it's not a fuse problem because I pulled the fuses specific to the compressor. The Jeep is at 75K miles now, and while poking around I noticed a flimsy little connector with thin gage wires at the compressor. Where the wires come off the harness, the weight of the short span of the wires causes a small kink where the wires are fitted on the upward facing end of the connector, and the wires are cracked and the copper exposed. Wiggling this wire with the AC on did not cause a change, so who KNOWS were the problem is. Anywho, there's a short synopsis of dealing with Jeep crap in a short 3 years. There's plenty more but no doubt most readers didn't get this far.

No rock crawling only daily driver. The only thing that was covered under warranty was the catalytic converter that had to be replaced. I've got an oil cooler leak, two coolant leaks, a rear main seal leak, and of course the rear axles are leaking. I bought the can bus myself at dealership for $70 took me 5 minutes to replace. I think AMC really understood Jeep as they positioned Jeep as a mid priced special brand. Chrysler jumped up the prices but at least it was still somewhat affordable, although quality tanked. Then Daimler utterly ruined Jeep by making a bunch of crossovers with the Jeep name. Fiat continued the trend but I feel they at least tried to build up hype and propose Jeep as a premium brand. Chrysler needs to sell more cars again. That would help Jeeps to become more affordable. Plus, the Renegade and Compass need to be moved to PSA platforms immediately. Jeep had ONE luxury model, that was also utilitarian in roots. The original Grand Wagoneer. This went for mega dollars (for the time) and was their competitor for the upper class. The Jeep brand attracts auto enthusiasts usually in their 20s maybe 30s. The last generation that was into cars was GenX. Now well into their late 40s and 50s, they have moved-on from the Jeep brand that represents adventure and freedom. Millennials and GenZs simply don't have the means or the interest for the Jeep brand.

I gotta admit, Jeep seemed onto something special under FCA like all the other FCA brands were at the time. I think FCA did well to build up hype and set up Jeep as a somewhat premium status icon. I go back to Sergio Marchionne every time we discuss an FCA brand, but he really carved out Jeep’s new niche that made them so successful up until 2018. I mean, Marchionne was a calculating guy who evaluated every model in FCA before rollout. That’s why Jeep was so successful. In 2018, Marchionne died and all the flare in FCA went out since that time. Stellantis has no clue on how to position and manage Jeep because that was all done under FCA and Stellantis is just a bunch of businessmen with no clue of anything whatsoever. I can’t imagine Marchionne coming out with the electric Jeeps and pricing them at what they are now. At least FCA under Marchionne understood the American market and how far they could expand Jeep without ruining the brand. My two cents…

For me, Jeep has always been about utility. CJ's and Wranglers aren't the best cars, but they can do all the car things. They aren't the best trucks, but they can do most of the truck things. You could always get one with a lot of creature comforts, or as a minimalist utility vehicle. Ditto the unibody Cherokee and Grand Cherokee: options for luxury or basic utility, combined with off road capability, at a price point not offered by other manufacturers. Reliability and ease of maintenance were also part of the sense of value associated with Jeep ownership. That's rapidly fading from memory, and new buyers aren't going line up to purchase what they're offering today. It makes me sad.

They should probably just dump everything except for the Wrangler and maybe the Grand Cherokee. It would be great to see Jeep produce a new base trim level Wagoneer underneath where the current one sits. Give it a mechanical 4wd with a low range transfer case, cloth seats, and strip out some of the other luxury items. They need to drop the starting price $10k for both the short and long wheelbase and make the Wagoneer($63k/$66k) more accessible for the every man. I feel like it would help it compete better against the Tahoe($56k)/Suburban($59k)/Expedition($55k/$62k). Additionally, they’ve got to address the reliability issues. An entry level Wagoneer at $53k-$56k makes a lot more attractive.

The offroad scene, and lifestyle, has evolved and changed (with arguable results). In the 90’s, having a weekend warrior Wrangler, Toyota Pickup, or anything else, was rather niche. The core audience was anyways. It was a very blue-collar middle American (here in the states) “light beer activity”. Cheap and fun, and if you don’t get it, oh well. Pulling into a parking lot covered in dents, dings, and mud was sort of a fringe thing. Then the internet thing happened. More people with way more expendable income started to take notice of what “those other kinds of people did for fun”. Skateboarding used to be the same way. It was dirty, dangerous, and in a lot of cases, looked down upon. Now, it’s a glossy Olympic Sport. With tremendous exposure, came intrigue, and money. It’s now a cash cow. Everyone wants in.

I test drove a JL and when I pulled the door handle it felt like I could rip it off if I really wanted to. The only thing that feels better is the steering wheel and seats. Everything else feels kind of cheap and if rubbed enough will wear down fast. I chose to stick with my 2017 JK rubicon. It feels way more solid. Nothing compares to a Jeep JK Recon. Literally the best jeep you could get. It actually comes with a reinforced front axle, front and rear steel bumpers, and a vented hood.

I think Jeep has fallen prey to the greed of the rest of the domestic manufacturers and their pathetic gang of criminals impersonating dealers. With the shortage of vehicles available and people that were willing to pay that price, every domestic manufacturer just produced what would pad their bottom line and eschew building entry level products at affordable prices. And even what they did build that was being shipped, the prices charged were inflated first by the manufacturers and then by their den of thieves, the dealers. Jeep is just a symptom of a diseased domestic sector.

Hubris, certainly, but I would also add questionable engineering (possibly done under the banner of cost cutting and/or the aforementioned hubris) - see the number of recalls in recent years and the drop in reliability ratings. Would I shell out the kind of money Jeep is asking these days for a vehicle that I would lack confidence in? Yeahhh, NO. I truly wish it was owned by Americans and those who truly understand its uniquely American appeal. I know it’s a long shot but I wish GM or Ford could somehow buy it, even though there would be duplication in the lineups. To close, I find it obscene that with the discontinuation of the Cherokee, Jeep is t even competing in the segment it created, the compact SUV (with the original Cherokee). Chrysler turned Jeep into a luxury brand as soon as they bought it. New fancy County trims of the XJ with leather, CD players, all power. ZJ Grand Cherokee was the same. The high trim models were $60-70k in 2024 money. TJ with coil springs instead of leaf. Grand Cherokee WK changed to independent front suspension. WK2 added rear independent suspension. The 4 door wrangler is a runaway sales hit. The gladiator is the same thing. All the image but with a pickup bed. Perfect suburbanite vehicle. If they hadn't converted there would be no Jeep brand today. Nobody buys a new vehicle to beat it up offroad since the 1960's and the execs know this. A new barebones CJ would be a sales flop. Polaris and Honda took over the recreational market with their four wheelers and side by sides. John Deere took over the utility market with their gater lineup which has also been cloned by others. This leaves Jeep with nowhere to go but the luxury market.
