@@mrlolmaster1019 Well Genji was based on Japanese history with fantasy inserts not Chinese, so *shrugs* Thing is, it was funny but there's still something to be said about having authentic history but adding mythology to it too.. Journey to the West for instance is based on real Chinese history, but includes mythology because it serves as both a buddhist and political allegory for the time. See, rather than Monk Tripitaka, a very real monk, Xuanzang made that journey to further expand buddhist scripture. The inclusion of mythology and their conflicts were a thinly veiled criticism of the ruling class at the time, given that in Taoist and confucianist thought, the celestial court was essentially a heavenly mirror of the real world Imperial bureaucracy. Combining history with fantasy and mythology has always been a thing, particularly in those cultures where mythology had a huge influence. All the gods and monsters mentioned in JTTW were "real" gods and monsters for instance, already existing in an already established pantheon of Taoist and earlier folklore.
